hmmm

hey, im in the network setup and im looking for the ftp site name and directory and i cant find any in the mirrors page
fedora 7 cd rom network install
ah nevermind

how in the world do i install softwares from the Fedora CDs once i'm done with the initial install?? YUM always wants to go online.

Hello

hi

Im looking for an solution to customize my fedora instalation. How I can put my logo in installation, change somothings and pack it in a .iso?

aah. i never tried it. but can revisor do it ?

i can't change any settings concerning the firewall
it always resets to the old values.... any ideas?

if your using the gui its broken

yep, i tried it on the gui
i just wanted to switch it off... where could i look for it in the conf files?

ckhconfig iptables off

that won't stop the running instance

of course not
service iptables stop
iptables -F

ok so my lvm has been recovering the journal for about 10 hours.. Anyone got any suggestions on if the data is still there?

-F won't stop it either

iptables -F won't do it, that lives the default policies in place which usually are 'drop'
but service iptables stop should work just fine.

i just killed them via /etc/init.d ?

service iptables stop = /etc/init.d/ipstables stop

yeah iptables*

assuming one spells everything correctly

ah ok

apparently with SELinux on you shoudl use service

probably wise Jamonation, in this case it doesn't matter but a good rule of thumb.

someone mentioned it a few days ago here in #fedora
"service runs a System V init script in as predictable environment as possible, removing most environment variables and with current working directory set to /.

ok, shutting down iptables did the trick
is there any tool to do xmodem file transfer via tty in f7?

that's thanks to ivazquez iirc

minicom

minicom does xmodem?

yep

ok
will give it a try :-)

every new packages aren't in fedora repo, i built it myself and install it with paco
http://paco.sf.net
/usr/bin/smi #!/bin/sh sudo paco -lD make install

Hey. I booted with init=/bin/bash and modified /etc/{passwd,shadow,group} to add a new user to a system. (The previous user didn't leave me the root password.) Now I'm getting audit errors saying a bunch of services were denied permission to read passwd, and I don't have read permission on the new home directory even though I explicitly chown'ed it to the new user.
I assume I've run afoul of some SELinux protection... how do I fix it?

first thing is to reset roots password.

Okay.
Done.

to do that, you need to reboot the system, and at the boot menu, switch it to single user mode

Oh, what is /etc/passwd-?

is there a x front end to mdadm?

thats the file that contailns users on the system

I'm already booted in single user mode (well, I booted with init=/bin/bash, it works well enough).
No, I mean passwd-, not passwd.
Trust me, I knew enough to get in to this mess ;-)

ok, so you're in single user mode, just type passwd

The trouble is I edited passwd, shadow, and group by hand, and now SELinux appears to be choking on then.
Yeah I did that already.
Is passwd- a backup of passwd?

ahh ok. did you keep a backup copy of those files?

No, but they're well-formed. It's just the permissions or security settings that are borked.

let me find cmd to chcon stuff.....

Would editing with vim have messed that up?

it shou;ldn't

Can you do ls -l /etc/{passwd,group,shadow} and tell me the proper permissions?

644 group and pwd, 6 shadow

They all show up as "unlabeled" if I do ls -lZ. Is that bad?

root:root owner group

Oh, how about ls -lZ?

ttuttle:system_u:object_r:etc_t for passwd, group
ttuttle:system_u:object_r:shadow_t for shadow

Okay, it won't let me chcon without SELinux turned on, I think.
Well, I've got the root passwd set, lemme try rebooting again and doing this under a normal session. brb while it reboots

As root, you want # restorecon -v name_of_file_you_should_have_left_alone

Although why you expect anyone to believe your story is... interesting, at best.

so does anyone know if they are in the works of fixing this broken kernel ?
or do I have to go outside the loop and install some 3rd party kernel what was it -41 koji or something?

And you don't have read permissions, because you couldn't be bothered to use the correct tools in the first place.

can someone explain to me why in maintenance mode its only readonly?? how much maintenance can you do if the FS is readonly?

Broken kernel? What did I miss?

I cant stay long because the new -33 kernel locks up the box

The *important* maintenance? Like being able to fsck the filesystem?

like dropping to shell cause somehting is broken..

I havent been able to do that either mwilson

but yes

it used to start from boot but I cant get it to do that any more

Of course, you probably think you should be running fsck against a filesystem some random background process might be modifying.

ah well...

actually i just removed my broken lvm and wanted to restart with mdadm but i forgot to edit my fstab and remove entry for lvm.. now i cant do that.

Gee, so remount the filesystem read/write.

Um, what?

hi, anyone knows more about bug 249931 ?

I was surprised people were buying into helping you crack whatever box you've gotten access to, is all. As far as I'm concerned, it looks like SELinux is doing what it's supposed to.

hmm, I didn't think of that. but yeah, selinux did its job

Um, no. First, it's an embedded system that I'm working on at work. It's been worked on by a different set of visiting researchers every two weeks, and they didn't leave me the passwords. Second, it did nothing to prevent me from rebooting the box into single-user mode, editing passwd, and then rebooting and fixing the security. And I really resent your attitude.

Come on... unknown root password, but you buy into him hacking passwd/shadow/group and adding another UID 0 user by hand? Please.

I didn't add another uid 0 user. I added one with uid 502.

i was under the impression he added a brand new user manually

Besides... once I have physical access, all bets are off. I could have just reinstalled the system if I wanted. SELinux only works when the system is running normally.
Besides, how is telling me how to *restore* the security settings on passwd/shadow/group, *which requires root access*, going to help me *gain* root access?

Sure, sure... and you didn't just reset the root password because...

...my first action was to add a user for myself, and useradd didn't exist, so I did it by hand.
Since I figured it would be better to use a non-root account for development work.
I've gotta say, accusing users of hacking simply for asking about the security system 1. makes your distro look like a bunch of jerks -- you are representing it, after all and 2. reeks of "guilty until proven innocent" and "security by obscurity".

ok i just went throught the mount manual.. how do you remount without unmounting first?

mount -o remount

ah!!! thank you

ttuttle, this is not yell at the help desk hour
that was yesterday at 3pm

Is it regularly scheduled?

ubetcha
)

Okay, let me know when it's happening next. I've got plenty of yelling left -- mwilson is patently ridiculous.

first off, with security issues it is best to assume guilt rather then innocence

Why?

now I dont know what issue you are having but if you are more knowledgable then mwilson why are you baiting him?

Jerks? Someone walked up to me IRL and told the same story, you wouldn't have access to the box for long. As for it happening in IRC... when the chances of it NOT being some random hacker rise above zero, I'll start worrying about what I assume.

please dont let this degenerate into a pissing contest gentlemen

Okay.

I've screwed up selinux because I like to play and break stuff, and sometimes its hard to put back together

^^ exactly.

nice the system is booting

and its good to know what happens when things go wrong so you can figure out if somebody messed with your system

But hey... I'll bite. You didn't fix the *actual* problem (unknown admin password) because...?

well try the selinux troubleshooter

The people who were last working on the system aren't working here any more. They were visiting researchers. I read through all the documentation they left, but they didn't leave teh password.

ttuttle are you talking about the root psswd?

I'm not sure there's anything I can say that will convince you I'm not doing something wrong, but the simple fact is that the actions I asked for help with required root access and didn't grant me any extra permissions.
The root password I set back to the company default, using passwd. I also added myself an account, because all of the previous users had one.

ok and you now have full root access?

but something happened to the security context of the passwd, gropu, and shadow files

Yes. I already had it, because I had access to GRUB and could boot with init=/bin/bash.

Yes, he modified them without using the proper tools.

right ... you arent a new kid on the block

As the old saying goes, once you have physical access, all bets are off. I'm sitting in front of a nano-ITX motherboard.
New to Fedora Core, not new to Linux.
I've been using Gentoo.

mwilson, he knows what he's doing apparently lets find out what happened first

(Without SELinux.)

well if we think its an selinux issue disable it temporarily and try it again

Want a quick way to kill a box? On a system running SELinux in enforcing mode, edit fstab with vi, don't restore context, and then reboot it.

Oh, restorecon appears to have worked.

well duh

It didn't actually kill it, it just prevented many services from starting.

right
what kernel are you using?

2.6.20-1.2320-fc5.

fc5/

I'd never used SELinux, and assumed it would preserve the context when editing, just as the regular permissions are preserved.

do you have seperate partitions for your sensitive data such as /home /whathaveyou ?
no

No, just one partition.

mistake numero uno

No, that's not how SELinux works.

thank you for all your help.. lvm is now gone. shame even tho it was test data it was some nice data.. now to tackle mdadm..

I don't think theres a gui for mdadm, haven't found one myself

It's really a shame about mdadm.

you need to back up your data, put in partitions for the different data groups/user groups you need so that you can update with fresh installs and still preserve your important data fc5 is way eol and you need to move up to f7

"avc: denied { net_bind_service } for pid=1913 comm="sdpd" capability=10 scontext=system_u:system_r:bluetooth_t:s0 tcontext=system_u:system_r:bluetooth_t:s0 tclass=capability", and a similar one for hidd.

yewouch
Ive got to fix my touchpad before I go crazy

I'd like to, but I'm not sure how feasible that would be. There's a lot of configuration that's already done, and I've only got a week to work on it. I can suggest it for whoever works on it next, though.
I'd like to, but I'm not sure how feasible that would be. There's a lot of configuration that's already done, and I've only got a week to work on it. I can suggest it for whoever works on it next, though.

where can i get xmms-wma ?

well ttuttle I can understand. I would draw a block diagram of the various partitions I would need, explain how that would save many hours of painful rework, make a good inventory of the hardware and then suggest installing a clean copy of f7 providing the hardware is compatible
we can always print config files on paper

Hm, schedule says Aug 1.

Yeah, it probably is. The thing is, it's an embedded system, and we're likely to switch to a better storage device (solid-state drive would rock) anyway, so it can wait until then.

well ok as long as you are up and running now.... fyi make a good back up as soon as you can

Of course. Soon I'm just going to put the code I'm working on in CVS.

k

I think I'd probably have it re-tag the entire system.

How does that work?

retagging would be a good idea

Never mind, I found a HOWTO.

well I guess Im now free to screw up my install

Hi people, I have an old RedHat 9 installed over here

I honestly dont know. rh8 was my last outing Ive been using fedora since fc1

i know, i'll google

rhel 5 isnt it?

Uh, it matters what the system is USING sda15 for, not what the OS is.

ok, based on wikipedia...there was RHL9, and then it forked over to RHEL

kc8hfi, thanks for steering me in the right direction
btw, is that an amateur radio all?

Anyone use a Sound Blaster PCI512 under F7, by chance?

yeah

It worked fine under FC6, but not under F7. Kinda bugs me.

Plenty of HAM operators on Freenode.

k4ep here

Makes me wonder if support for it was removed on purpose, or if I messed something up.

i had a pci128 and it sucked under fc6.

lol KC0WYC you've got more nics them my old golf clubs

The pci512 did well under FC6, it always sounded great.
Just... would be nice to have it work under F7 I suppose.

have you filed a bug yet?

I have not. Perhaps that's a good starting point.
#creative doesn't have a whole lot of tips, either.
Suggesting, instead, it's a hardware problem.

have you checked to see what driver is used in FC6 and what has changed in F7?

I fail to see how that's probable since it worked fine under FC6.
Yes.

you have been "bitching" here for days about it, we are mostly end users, do something about it if you want ti to work.

I love you, too.

No love needed

I haven't been "bitching", but I certainly appreciate your concern.

Just suggesting the best place for you to get resolution
http://bugzilla.redhat.com/

Already there.

Perhaps someone can help me with this question. I am have a FC6 boot.iso and would like to add a kickstart file into the boot.iso before it is burnt to CD. Any ideas?

ISO Master

crap I cant get gsynaptics to work this time

can you mount the iso, make the changes and unmount??

Nope. The iso9660 driver is read-only.

ahh, ok

how can i setup which installation the "gcc" command links to?

I was going to try writing it to a CD-RW, then just adding the file into the CD-RW?

it's "gcc (GCC) 4.0.1 (Apple Computer, Inc. build 5449)" right now!
whatever that is (and, however i get rid of it)

you could mount it, copy the files out, add what you need and use mkisofs I think

The boot catalog will need to be restored.
No, I don't know how.

Hmmmn. I just think it'd be useful for a mondo-like backup, but not as system-specific as mondo

well crap!

How do I kill a specific vnc desktop?

argh I never should have updated to this kernel
lol

reboot and pick the old one

Why would anyone here know how to swap Apple's gcc around? And why do you think you need to?

kc8hfi, it erased the old one

don't you have installonlyn plugin enabled?

I'll wait till they figure out its borked and repair it

why i'd need to? because i don't want gcc 4.0.1 from apple but the one shipped with fedora

If you think you need to break things by calling the wrong compiler... well, why don't you just call the wrong compiler?

Southern_Gentlem, isnt that some third party thingy?

eeh apple's is the wrong one

If you say so.

f_newton, NOPE

really

if so, it should have kept the older one

you can go back and install the older one

it was /usr/local/bin/gcc, i rm'ed it and things work again

at least you should be able to

I can't shut down my Fedora 7

well I have stock yum and it erased it and I have looked for -27 but cant find it

elite01, why did you install apples gcc in a fedora box

i still don't know where that one came from

So... now you're going to claim that a Mac, running Fedora, is somehow running Apple's Mach-O copy of gcc?

can someone help?

i don't even have a mac

act1v8, thats the -33 kernel

and i don't have the slightest clue where that gcc came from

hey i'm having an issue

yes, 2.6.22.1-33.fc7

You put it there, of course.

its the problem act1v8

for some reason, after rebooting, sendmail, cups, and sm-client take a LONG time to boot up
as in 1-2 minutes each.

or the packet manager did

any ideas what i might have done?

solution?

elite01, what repos do you have enabled

Undo whatever you did to break name resolution.

i have no idea what i might have done.
i didn't change anything

Same answer... of course you did.

http://rafb.net/p/GiySFi58.html

paste the output of ls /etc/yum.repos.d to the pastebin

i updated from fc6, used smart because yum didn't work

mwilson, seriously.. i didn't touch any settings, lol.

lol

alright. if i can't figure out what i did, is there any way to set any particular settings to default, or any kind of troubleshooting?
short of disabling all three of those services on boot-up (i don't use any of them)

mot, you dont print, and you dont use samba?

Uh, huh. Yeah. Sure. You didn't change anything, didn't install any updates, any new software... you just turned on the box yesterday and it didn't do this, you turned it on today and it DID.

SMB starts fine.

smb is not the same as smb-client now is it

Hi channel

Why do people waste time claiming "I didn't change anything!" rather than just undoing whatever it is they did?

lol, i said sm-client

how do I "unupdate"

as in, sendmail client, not smb-client.

ok

in fact, i don't have the smd-client service installed, just smb.
that being said. no, i seriously didn't change any settings.

because they changed so much stuff they don;t know what broke what

i've already checked my name settings and my network settings. everything's the same.

then service sendmail stop && chkconfig sendmail off

So it's better to lie?

hey

Yes.

I am going to check on that now ivazquez brb

ok, I have install FC7 on the dell d520, and now it hangs when booting from teh harddrive

hey, i see cyber_cop's problem

after ... booting the kernel"

what he's telling me is that after installing fedora
he didn't create a regular user, he only has root
so when x fails to start and boots him out, it wants him to login as a regular user
but since he didn't create one, he's sort of stuck

So, have him boot into 3
and create a user

I live in the US, I can say what ever I want! WOOT! however, I did point potential children to download a copy of fedora thinking it was porno... So I guess I saved some poor child from seeing his daily fix of porno for today!

Hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 and log in as root.

or that

Freenode is NOT an open forum.
Do it again and be banned.
Last warning.

ivazquez now THAT I understand... but it was a JOKE!

ivazquez, automount worked fine

Excellent, thanks.

hmm apparently I have to wait 15 minutes ....

you are most welcome

so
what happens if you have no users
and can't login as root straight away

nothing

he tried using 'root' to login but it simply won't let him...

You switch to a text console and log in.

you log in as root

he tried.

he has other issues

Fedora does not restrict the root login. Someone is lying.

not knowing what they might be, I would suggest doing a clean install and accepting the defaults

maybe he is not using the correct passwrod

cApsLocK

kdm used to deny root for logins, at least I think it was kdm.

okay i told him to do a fresh install
what his problem is
is that is english isn't very good

we are not talking about a desktop manager we are talking about the console

http://forums.fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?t=161423

kdm insinuates kde and that is a difficult path from the beginning

Does anyone have experience with this problem?

i don't think he understands the menus during install, and i don't think he created a regular user, or if he did he doesn't realize it. or something along those lines.

mot fedora comes in a plethora of languages pick one that works for you

a regualr users should not be needed at that point

well he didn't seem to be following what i was saying
i think he made a premature move from ubuntu to fedora.

same here
one thing is clear, he is not in Kansas anymore

i didn't think there were fedora installers in different languages.

lol he went from the kiddie pool to surfing the west coast? well at least he's got stones

sand

lol

the kid has sand

Crofton what is the problem?

at least he ain't gonna be tainted anymore by ubuntu

There's only one installer with dozens of languages.

hmm

literally dozens

not sure why he's having issues then. he was vague

even arabic

hung at "booting the kernel"

he doesn't speak arabic.
he speaks turkish.

there used to be redneck, I miss that

the forum suggest waiting 15 minutes and it will boot

lol EvilBob

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Bugs/F7Common

Crofton that thread states it runs after a few minutes

I speak redneck

made me feel at home

hmm

heh

maxcpus?

so far -41 is working from what I can tell

Excellent.

yeah. -33 really had me p'od. I really thought dev team was a bit more careful then that

I have been using it since it finished building with out issues
dave Jones was away for a few days s his minions were in charge

well they could perhaps use a bit more experience and constraint
I was almost ready to have my boyz put together a working one for me

linville does a good job from what I have seen
I see that -33 was built by chuck

well it works with my hardware so Im cool with it

cebbert

lets not name call now...
u know how easy it is to make a mistake in all those coding lines

ivazquez, thanks for the tip, the maxcpus line is working

ivazquez, yumex failed to work yet the gui was good

Okay, who here is currently running -41?

I am

what's the command in yum to show the last couple packages installed?

/var/log/yum.log

Which problems did it solve for you?

apparently all the errors I was getting. my gsynaptics now works, the box hasnt locked up, and the apps appear to work sans yumex

hah, i knew the only thing i installed yesterday was 'unrar'

it also shut down as instructed and restarted

Which kernel were you running before?

-33

helo all

Hey fig newton!

something is happening. the older kernel updtes are no longer available. is this a bug or a feature?

Neither. It's just a fact.

ivazquez, it happens that sometimes i wanna use an older kernel (like after messing the audio driver) and the newer is freezing the machine. there is no place wherei can still get the older version?

Which one are you running?

ivazquez, on this machine, *33, at work, *27
on another macjine 3228

Try -41 from koji.

ivazquez, thnx, but that's an option for me, maybe, it was nice when we can reverse to an older stable version

Install -41 and let me know what happens.

ivazquez, ok
ivazquez, only at home, at office tomorrow

That's better than nothing.

ivazquez, Why isn't 41 available through yum ? when will it ? asking cause i have problems with -33.

ivazquez, ok, it's coming

Because it was only requested for a push into updates-testing this morning.

eta 5+3 minutes

ivazquez, Ok, thanks.

"man vim" - doesn't state which mode vim is in when started by way of 'vi'
any guesses ?

#vim

I would like to use cfdisk, but it is not installed by default installation and I can't find it in the official repos. Where can I find it, please?

hi, is there a packaged version of Tribler for fc6 or 7?

perhaps yum or google would know?

booooooooooooorinnng

boring with computers means every thing works and I can go to the lake instead of the office
so...

EvilBob, I tried but no luck with that

Well if Google doesn't know, then how would we?

f_newton, exactly!
So, make Bob work harder!? :P

google is merely the largest library on the planet
its up to us to stock the shelves
no way I like the lake

So internet going out from a storm is akin to losing your library card? lol

lol no its akin to overtime or service calls

lol

cha - ching!

Spice up your day, call Geek Squad and ask extremely precise technical questions that are OS neutral, and when they can't fix it, say "oh, you mean you fix Windows, not "computers", that always breaks up the monotany

lol geeksquad is a best buy service dept and they only know what they can read from their call center advice book
I dont tease the monkeys cuz they always through crap

I like to call up and ask for help tracking down a "Denise Chip" (old Amiga part)

lol

ahhh cbm

(it's even funnier for me because I know what that is)

lol

I went from the commadore to the trs 80
I had an old xenith too

I believe it was the graphics coprocessor.

anyone remember that one?

ask them if they can tell you what a "fatter Agnus" is

Agnes :P

ah, hehe

hi guys

No, Denise was sound, Agnes was graphics.

It's the same thing at those small "computer repair" places or stores

the girls done get a hi from you?

btw, when you find out, tell me, because the creep behind the counter at the Amiga store had no idea

in F7, my IDE ATA disks are named as sd*, sounds like SCSI naming scheme. what's new anyway?

libata

hmm

Fatter Agnes was a more powerful drop-in replacement for the original Agnes graphics coprocessor.
At least I *think* it was a drop-in replacement...

ah, k

ivazquez, val-at-work, I still have my Amiga 500 and 4000 with Video Toaster, I was just talking about it yesterday as a matter of fact.
The 500 was used to run my C-Net BBS
still have the modem rack and all the modems too

val-at-work, you mean there is still amiga stores?

this was in 91 or so

val-at-work, ok

Amiga is being made again, the OS is being developed as well, in fact, AmigaOS 4.0 just came out

ivazquez, i've tested ker*41, it seems it is stable and maybe a little faster than *33. the usbstick mount issue was not fixed though. so i'll stay for now with *33 where i have kmod-nvidia

i was a certified amiga tech i loved the 4000

I went looking to buy a computer, wanted the Amiga because it handled multitasking & looked sharp -- but the guys there turned me off from it

val-at-work, amiga where fantastic at doing video work back then
were

Angus, not agnes
Angus, Paula, Denise.

No, it's Agnes.

AndyCap, we used to call them FAT AGGIes anyway
8372A (Fat Agnus). CPN: 318069-01. Worked with Denise for video scan control. 1024KB

Where can I find a list of fedora core 6 apt-get servers?

fedora uses yum

you _can_ use apt tho right?

from someone who cares about apt.

Libila, if the mirror suports it

Google's giving both spellings.

I noticed, but what I have in print in old magazines is angus.. I guess the guy at the launch wasn't speaking too clearly.

hi guys

I've seen it labeled "Agnes" on schematics.

AndyCap, some of the other docs called it agnus

I've been having this problem updating for a long time. It's quite a headache. Every time I try to update this java stuff, here's the error message I get:

thus spelling got corrected to agnes
what java stuff

http://rafb.net/p/F3KfWU85.html
Sorry about the 1-liner about 3 screens long :-(
Or wide, I should say.

Hows everybody in here?
ok... nice welcoming

#jpackage

So, you think it's a jpackage question not for fedora?

im not here for socializing
or interpersonal communication

then why ythe attitude then

seems like it.

Im here to welcome FedoraNoon to fedora
*noob
she will be in soon
brb

still seems like socializing to me

NO, its tech help

that table holds the level code, but it doesn't get changed unless the level changes
sorry about that, wrong window

a program to burn bin/cue files?

k3b/gnomebaker?

thanks!

k3b!!!

Hey

hello

Ok everybody AgoLaura is new to Fedora.. she needs tech help Please be nice.

Thanks Volt

hey Southern_Gentlem

NP (just so you know they dont like me)

hello frozty_sa

Bye everybody

lol
So can anyone help a noob with fedora 7?

nope

never mind EvilBob

whats the question?

not with out more information

AgoLaura, only if the noob can tell us the problem

Ask a real question, and you'll get a real answer.

in here, just ask the question, and anyone who can help will help
hello EvilBob

ivazquez, yumex worked to install it just didnt work to remove so it could be the yumex gui not the kernel -41koji

Ok, Can i install Fedora 7 without uninstalling windows (dual boot)

Okay.
Yes.

technically it is possible

yes, if you have free space left on the drive

you can dual boot Windows and F7, but Fedora will poke at it every now and then going "you suck"

AgoLaura, can you?, we dont know, can it be done, yes

AgoLaura, as long as you have freespace (so you can have a partition for Fedora)

thanks, ermm.... does anybody know where i can get drivers for fedora?

For?

drivers for?

drivers for what?

by installing the kernel

AgoLaura, generally Fedora comes with everything you need
unless you have something weird

my nvidia graphics card and my sound

you download them afterwards or during the install

Nvidia there is a howto to install those

as Southern_Gentlem pointed ;-)

kdekorte, your slow

well im downloading fedora now as we speak

and sound should just work :-p

s/your/you're

hahaha, I bet you have macros or just notepad open

notepad rocks

thanks for the link

notepad?? notepad?? what is this?

ok gedit
samething

gedit? kwrite man

what terminal is fedora?

noooooo!!!! kdekorte, don't make that mistake!!

i'm running fine at the moment, but thanks for the consideration gentlem

gedit is ok, I use kate as well

bash.

AgoLaura, gnome terminal

does anyone here use OpenOffice calc?

notepad != (gedit OR kate)

konsole

kate is pretty much the only KDE app I use

yes, but for what

printing spreadsheets

ok guys you are confusing the noob,c hill

on that site it says standard, PAE AND FC6 XEN.

standard

oh, I think she means arch as in olden-days terminal...

generally if you don't know what it is, pick the basic

ok thanks
so is sound and graphics the only drivers i will need?

AgoLaura, why are you downloading FC^ and not F7

PAE is for 32bit machines with more that 4GB of RAM

How do I get OpenOffice Calc 2.2 to print a single sheet in a multi-sheet spreadsheet document, how do I select the print area, and how do I say "fit to page"?

im downloading fedora 7 from a trrent
torrent

good

i'm also having difficulty with Landscape

AgoLaura, did you happen to try the LiveCD?

PM

No, im just winging it with the real OS

the LiveCD will tell you basically how compatible your machine is with Fedora

oooh, an adventurous person ;-)

but thats why im dual booting, so i still have trusty windows

I have a USB flash drive that was booting f7, but stopped booting. I can still read all the files, just no boot.

AgoLaura, if you install Fedora and you have not created a partition for it (blank space on the drive) you will erase your Windows

do you have experience with modifying partitions?

But other people told me that it automatically makes a seperate one for you

trusty windows.... interesting

not as such but i can get a tut on the net

it does, but only in the sense that it auto-partitions all available free space for use by itself

can't open /dev/dsp". any thoughts one what permissions are needed?

it would be better if you make sure you have all your data backed up before you start

AgoLaura, tell those people that told you that to come in here, we would like to have a few words with them

AgoHippy!

find a tut on partitioning, as well as a program which can modify partitions

they helping yet?

ok i will make a seperate partition then, how bit 10-20gig?

I guess so

big*
yeah there great thanks

woohoo

they said you were wrong

AgoLaura, 20gb would be better

hey im right 1 out of 10

about it making a partition for me

space... 5GB for the OS and then how much you want for data

ok ill do about 20 then

can anyone recommend a windows app for modding partitions that AgoLaura can use? I'm only familiar with partitionmagic

Partition Magic

but that's expensive to buy....

gparted?

gparted livecd

hmmm oddly /dev/dsp seems to be owned by my user.root

is there a boot cd for that

magic/logic

vista can do it by itself, a gparted cd is free.

crw-rw----+

i don't think i've touched vista yet

http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php

what does the c mean?

thanks, I might check into the gparted livecd sometime. it'll be a good thing to have in my recovery box

It's a character/stream device.

so i just burn that as ISO and stick it in?

ivazquez, thanks

yes

ok thanks

AgoLaura, yes before you install Fedora... and PLEASE make sure you have a good backup of your Windows data

doesnt fedora distributions using Linux kernel version 2.6 alter the partition table so that Windows no longer recognizes those partitions? I dont know fedora well

should it be owned by root:root like all the other devices in /dev?

frozty_sa, myself i have never used gparted, i always do my dual boots from scratch

same this side...always pre-partitioned all my drives for use
but it's definitely worth looking at

VoltaXander, no they install a different type of partition which isnt natice to windows
native

ok i got it downloading as torrent now

nm looks like allt eh /dev/snd devices are owned by me

how can I connect to a printer on a windows machine?

I've quit dual booting, I install linux and then put on vmware and run windows in the VM

br
brb*

but I'm not a gaming person

neat. maybe I should download fedora and try it

leo2007 I think you're going to need samba for that

so do I. I haven't dual booted since november

VoltaXander, but the fedora installer will not reparttion the hard drive for you

lost a use for a permanent windows install, and my games run in cedega and wine

frozty_sa, I havn't had a windows bootable machine for a couple of years now...

EvilBob, ping

I don't know how to get the uri for the printer. Ideas?

kdekorte, this machine runs vm windows but i have other boxes i must do dual boot on

about the on;y think that is a pain are bios updates

pong

and flashing firmware on dvdrws

I thought it did. I was also going by hearsay from somebody else.
brb

so compiz-fusion still dosn't work on multi monitors?

only got fully into linux host last year. before that I was still dual-booting
it was partly due to not having internet connection available so linux was still a pain to get some things running (ie, dependencies etc)

can I just extlinux the flash drive to get it to boot again?

Back!

I would like to install kmplayer, but I can't find it in the repos (I have the official repos and livna). Does anybody know where I can find a package for kmplayer, please?

yum search kplayer

that's not the same thing

btw, will i have the internet automatically on Fedora or will i have to install?

ciao, is kplayer

its the kde player based on mplayer

what type of connection do you have?

i sold a house AgoHippy!!!

kplayer is not kmplayer

Blueyonder, well its called virgin now
Great, Volt!!
how much do you get for that

is it ADSL or what?

wolsni is right. Kmplayer is different, I need kmplayer to use the plugin for konqueror
wolsni, do I have to compile it from source or is there a package somewhere?

although kplayer does provide a kpart

ah, sorry, GionnyBoss

ermmm... im not sure

CRASH69, no problem!

I've never seen a kmplayer package for fedora

wolsni, ok thanks... I will install it from sources than
s/than/then

OK. can you look up your package on the company's website then give me the link?

frozty shes 4MB

adsl?

cable

http://allyours.virginmedia.com/websales/service.do?id=2 package Large

frozty_sa, basicly adsl or cable

there is an FC6 rpm for kmplayer on rpm.pbone.net, but I don't know about using it

also, router'd or pc connecting?

Router

http://rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/search.php?query=kmplayer&submit=Search+...

http://allyours.virginmedia.com/websales/service.do?id=2
i have large

then your internet should just work, according to what VoltaXander just told me
thanks Southern_Gentlem

ok thanks

http://guru.unixheads.com/rpm/packages/Multimedia/kmplayer/

I am unlucky still in the regards of high-speed internet etc
hello opsec

thanks guys, but looks like that these are rmps for different distros... or am I wrong?

http://guru.unixheads.com/rpm/packages/Multimedia/kmplayer/src/

use rpmbuild to rebuild those for fedora

opsec, how can I do that, please? I never used rpmbuild and I don't want to make a mess

ack. i did a yum update kernel to go from FC6-FC7 and now i can't ping my host anymore.
s/FC7/F7/

it's just easier if i do it for you.. i don't have time to explain it

so I been trying to install frostwire and java.. but been having problems =\

linagee, yum upgrades are not our problem

hello frozty_sa

opsec, ok thanks I will read the documentation

i need a server monkey now.

linagee, YOU ARE RUNNING FEDORA ON A REMOTE HOST
?
opps sorry

lol. yes.

DA

does anyone happen to know of any F7 cd ISOs? I've been trying to create some with revisor, but I seem to get some sort of failure while installing each time

rjp_, downgrade your version of yum

hehe, http://www.oracle.com/technologies/linux/index.html

koji.fedoraproject.org

please don't kill me

do i need yum to be able to do my nvidia card?

yes

That image is bound to be stolen many, many times...

hi guys I have recently installed fedora 7 (wich is great so far) how do I add the livna repo please

thanks

how is compiz in this one? Is it production quality yet? ( I'm still in 6, haven't really looked at 7, and was just curious. )

do you actually type in user command or do you have some funky regex matching going on there in your xchat? ;-)

Southern_Gentlem, is there a specific version I should be using for it?

compiz = no problem

Southern_Gentlem thanks

do you maybe mean fusion?

So whats actually good and different about Fedora compared to windows?

southern, you like pointing don't you

that is what i do frozty_sa

lol -- haven't heard of fusion... just know that compiz wasn't "production" in fc6.. at least that's what it said..

tw2113, almost as much as I like kicking

touche

free, open source, stable, flexible

and the biggest reason, its not windows!

the list goes on and on

ok, sounds good
Im only using Fedora 7 because everyone said its the best for linux noobs

AgoLaura, actaully it all depends on you actually

Fedora is rewarding, but it does require some effort.

im just gonna google what i need to know or ask in here

Southern_Gentlem I have primary.sqlite.bz2 that showed with Livna.repo is this normal?

if you are willing to communicate with us to fully describe your problem, we will do our best to help you fix the problems you will be having

that's what i get for using a weak nickserv password

no one wants your nick rjp

yeah, you have all been real great so far

f_newton, the rjp that was using it did

AgoLaura, VoltaXander came in before and gave us attitude before you came in, thats why we gave he/she a hard time

yeah, hes just a kidder. a real nice guy if you get to know him

rjp set your password and set it to enforce

oh god
i just started typing a response on the wrong keyboard

i have GParted now

I skipped through about 5 installer prompts

happened to me as well......
not the installer though ;-)

the problem is I have the screen on a KVM (dual monitors on main machine, one is on a KVM to other machines), but two keyboards

had two pc
pc's* standing in my room, switching keyboards as I use it, screen taking two inputs...

Southern_Gentlem does (primary.sqlite.bz2) suppose to show under the livna.repo I mean is it safe?

yes

If you deselect all package groups at the installer, yum still gets installed, right? (i.e. it will give you a minimal, but working install?)

No.

Southern_Gentlem ok thanks

3.3.7

Well, it will *work*, but it won't have yum.

3.5.6-0.3.fc6 Fedora-Core
kde-config: 1.0

My laptop w/xp wouldn't boot this morning, got some bluescreen or some crap, so i installed fedora from disc and i can see the other comp on the network, but how can i see c on the laptop its running on?

that's because you're using windows you jew!

hahaha
out of bounds!

that's so un-necessary..

so, how can i see c

Do that again and be banned. Last warning.

if you installed fedora, you probably don't have a c: anymore
anymore

he's running off of the cd

im running from disc
not installed

See Fedora Solved.

ivazquez, i figured my friendly swift kick gave the idea

oh ok, didn't quite understand

But Fedora really isn't intended to be used as a diagnostic tool in that manner.

Southern_Gentlem, thanks, I think i've got my nickserv record setup to not give my nickname to anyone who wants it, now

so there is no way to see c
?

i also have a password that is NOT the same as the nickname (which was really dumb to begin with)

Fedora have any problems running servers?

the sites Southern_gentleM tells you how

some servers have problems running Fedora

Each version is generally supported for about 13 months, so you'll have to update frequently.

not my ye olde p3 ;-) (luckily)

VoltaXander, no but due to short lifespan of a fedora release (13 months) rhel or centos is recommended (5 years)

Supported as in security updates, bug fixes, etc.

some of the HP servers with a crappy raid controller don't run fedora at all

7 years, actually.

And IRC

oh didnt see those sites

most servers run just fine httpd, nfs, imap, smtp

DNS server? ppp issues with syslogd?

um ok
this is my first time using fedora, so i have no idea how to run a terminal or anything
isnt there an easier way to se

ok i burnt GParted twice now stupidly

engaged, sometimes one needs to disengage fingers so eye can engage the infomation ( in his best David Carodean Voice)

see the c drive

its just opening up folders
boot, syslinux and gparted

ago? me?

anyone who knows

hold on

ok

Mpinc68

AgoLaura, backup your data first

do you mean you put in your pc while windows is running?

ohh it runs at start

I found a KDE repo for fedora that contains kmplayer

GionnyBoss, good for you

i dident know i had to restart and do it like an OS

GionnyBoss, what is the url?

brb

yes
stop

Southern_Gentlem, yes! I just said this because maybe people that helped me here wanted to know

ok
what?

i would have went with 40-50. PS is 10gigs alone (not counting CS). It might be good to start there since you have all the support already

have you backed up your data like people have recommended?

wget http://apt.kde-redhat.org/apt/kde-redhat/fedora/kde.repo in /etc/yum.repos.d directory

i have nothing of real importance

even your windows?

i have the disc

OK. enjoy

kc8hfi, then of course you can edit the file and set it as enabled or disabled as you whish

v myrelogs_ref

GoinnyBoss, thanks

kc8hfi, no problem! I found it on a guide for an installation of a laptop. But looks like a good repo

Can someone walk me through, or provide me a location for fininding instructions on how to, set up Samba for my work network?

kc8hfi, with kmplayer installed, konqueror works very good with videos embedded in a web page
I'm testing it now

Southern_Gentlem how do I know if all hardware drivers are working correctly or not working @ all? (like a hardware profile) am using gnome

for a small fee many of us are willing to consult with your employer

This is my own project. My employer does not know that I am testing it out.

that is not what you said

GionnyBoss, always wondered how to make konqueror do videos. i always use firefox. i'll hafta try that now

Samba.org

thanks EvilBob

OK, i had no clue what i was doing in that

kc8hfi, you can just use kaffeine plugin and kmplayer plugin, probably one works better for some type of files and the other one for others... I have to check it

There was like 20 options and i dident have a clue wich one it was

have you looked up for a tut?

yum install samba samba-common samba-client samba-swat system-config-samba

i will now

I installed samba. I would still need to install the other ones correct?

yes

it looks nothing the way myne did in the tut

Ago! Youre alive

yup

good job

hint: use system-config-samba to setup your users, shares, workgroup on your machines

ohhhhhh.

nut i got lost in GParted
but*

that's why my server went bonkers on FC6-F7. i have hard coded /dev/hda1, /dev/hda2, etc. in /etc/fstab

2.6.22 was when they scrapped hdX and started doing everything sdX, right?

http://fedorasolved.org/post-install-solutions/ntfs-read-write/ but it says mount point does not exist??

No, it's whenever libata was introduced to the kernel.

2.6.22?

Why don't you... check the changelogs...

lol

why oh why...

engaged what 's the cmd u typed

where?

bah! even my grub says hda

id di everything the tutorials said to do

you've already been given most of the answer. you are aware google will take you longer?

so I been trying to install frostwire and java.. but been having problems =\

i'm pretty sure that's the case. i just don't want to re-reboot and then have to call up a server monkey again. lol. (as much as i love saying the words "server monkey")

oh weird
it says mount point 0 does not exist
but if i go into /mnt/windows i can see the c

OK. so did you find your answer yet?

hi, how long fedora 7 is out?
imean in months?

Since May 31st.
~2, then

ricky, thanks
i thinks it time to upgrade fc6 hosts*

yay! i rebooted into F7! yay for fedora! :-

any news on ATI drivers for F7 ?

anyone know what the "Super" key is in beryl on Fedora7 ?

Ok I have a server setup with directory server (ldap) uses can login fine. I want to install a mail daemon, but no users have "home directories" on server. So how.. do I go about this?

same as super key anywhere
the win
"win"* key

frozty_sa, doesn't seem to work
maybe I don't have it mapped correctly

not necessarily

monteslu, what are you trying to do with it?

I've got a slightly funky erogonmic microsoft keyboard

did you have metacity running, and then activate beryl?

just trying to kick off the shortcust in beryl-manager
I mean the ones specified for some effects

if it's water effects, the availability of those is dependent on your vid card
i.e. ctrl-super

I'm trying to do the fade to desktop

val-at-work: and sadly, my water effects don't work :-(

which is mapped to SuperF6

you did not answer my question

water seems to work fine on my nvidia 7300gt
frozty_sa, which one?\

did you have metacity running, and then switch beryl on in the same X session

oops, sorry missed it.
I'm running kde, and just laucnhed beryl-manager

NV28GL [Quadro4 980 XGL]

so I guess I went from kwin to beryl
that the wrong way to do it?

yes. but I can't help you then...I know gnome has a bug when switching from metacity to beryl/compiz
not wrong way. yes was to your previous remark

there a way to launch beryl-kde without launching kwin first?

run beryl-manager, use beryl as your window decorator, log out
then log back in and see if it works
but first, see if it's a problem with your super kery
key*
try amarok shortcuts or something

cool. I'll fire that up
seem to work fine in amarok with the "Win" key
ok, its working now... strange
I never logged out
turns out I don't like that particular plugin anyway

monteslu, inconsistent winkey mapping bug affecting you too eh?

zcat, it would appear so

monteslu, it's and OLD OLD bug that's annoyed me for a long time too. filed a bug aboug it.
monteslu, easy to reproduce here.

it seems to work every other key press or so

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=234603

I'll add my name to it

I think I've read your report but I've now found another way that in some cases disables more mappings
I first figured it out when I couldn't alt+tab, or ctrl+shift+t (gnome-terminal)

hey ivazquez my shortcut to selinux troubleshooter disappeared with the installation of the new kernel

Speaking of key mappings, does anybody know why ctrl-a seems to be mapped to decrease the font size for me in gnome-terminal?

no. but I'd say check your settings

keyboard shortcuts I'm sure you'll find that it's been assigned to zoom.

I really wish it were
Just double-checked, and it's not (it's set to ctrl--)
This problem makes using screen very annoying - heh.
But yeah.. this issue has confounded me since FC6

ricky, i remap ctrl-a to the tilde key. saves my wrists.

Aw, but I use ~ often too- I'll probably end up changing screen config, though.

hi folks, is there any how-to on connecting to a printer on a windows machine?

Although ctrl-a = beginning of line is useful as well.

hm .. after updating to the most recent kernel, im no longer able to get DHCP ip information
I can manually set ip parameters and it seems to work

Use CUPS- go to localhost:631 and log in/add a printer.

keyboard bindings. see if it tells you it's assigned already.

ricky, er, i mean the backtick, not tilde

and when i try to dhclient eth0, I see udp packets comming from dhcp server but my computer just won't accept them

Aha.

escape `` in ~/.screenrc
and it kinda forces you to use $() instead of `` bash substitution.

It allows me to assign ctrl-a to increase font size instead, and then ctrl-a works as expected for that function.
Then when I assign it back to ctrl-+, ctrl-a goes back to decreasing the font size.

do I need to use "Windows Printer via Samba"

hmm, that's certainly an odd one...

Sounds right.
Funny thing- this happens on both my Fedora and Debian machine. I'm somewhat suspecting Beryl/Compiz, but I'm not sure.

sorry, the printer is connected to one net socket but not to a windows machine

Ohh.

but I don't know why in windows they can just use it

Hi, can I install bolth GNOME and KDE?

yes

Yup. The packages don't conflict.

try disabling beryl or so

ok, and when i install them, how do I load GNOME or KDE?

Just tried that/quiting the Beryl manager- either the "damage" has already been done, or Beryl's not causing it.
Searching Controla in gconf-editor doesn't turn anything up.

using the same keyboard in both machines?

Yes, incidentally.

might be a funky keyboard

Let me try switching it quickly.
Well, I can't say I didn't try

how can I list all printers in my network?

random. good luck dude

Thanks- heh.

lol Ive got hp on the line and they're looking for a mini pci wifi card with the zd1211 chipset to go in to my laptop

After 6 hours, I finally have my Linksys WMP54G v4.1 wireless card working, but whenever I boot into Fedora and log in, I always have to manualy use the iwconfig command to tell it the WEP key of my wireless network. How do I set that to happen during bootup?

http://www.thinkgeek.com/tshirts/generic/8a5b/

how do i make it so my wi-fi card automaticly loads?

you could use networkmanager to automatically handle those type of connections?

do I need root privilege to change printer setting via localhost:631?

that is, if I understand what you are asking correctly

when i boot my computer and log in, the wireless connection shows its not connected. It only connects when i go into a root terminal and type /sbin/iwconfig wlan0 enc my WEP key, and then reactivate the wireless connection
