realbytecomputer; ...alpha?
you're pretty disconnected from that project i can see
Okay
the repo for Fedora 7 has been up for weeks and weeks. it's beta at worst
So Compiz Fusion is the latest development?
can it do SkyDome?
NETWizz; yes, and someone keeps updated packages in a repo for Fedora 8
Fedora 7*
it can do anything.
Nice
Can do anything berly can?
Nearly.
...it cures cnacer
cancer*
realbytecomputer; nearly? it does everything beryl did.
I have a skydome - but chucked the cube caps cuz I like to see through my eight-sided cube
There are still minor issues - like with 3d and with window previews - that's all being worked on right now.
so that makes it alpha?
It also does heaps of things that beryl just can't do....and that I use daily - makes my life work faster
what is missing that was in beryl?
realbytecomputer; stop talking out your ass to the uninformed
Shore does.
NETWizz; you shouldn't be running Fedora Core 4 anymore... it's dead.
so grab Fedora 7, Ubuntu 7.04 if you like, whatever
the only thing i hate about compiz/beryl, is that it !@#$s with opengl, so blender will crash a lot while i'm running beryl/compiz
_Centauri_; thank god for a disable button
I run Ubuntu 6.10 Right now
with AIGLX and Beryl
Thinking about an upgrade
downhillgames, yeah, the only think i like about compiz/beryl anyway is truely transparent console windows
on the one drive I'm having trouble with smartctl -t short /dev/hdb then wait a minute or two and then smartctl --all /dev/hdb near the bottom it will show the list of tests and their status
_Centauri_; i wish xchat worked w/ it... i know it did in Compiz (original, using Xgl)
not very familiar with the tool myself
anyone can help with registering https://admin.fedoraproject.org/accounts/userbox.cgi
trying to setup fedora mirror
_Centauri_; pre-AIGLX :P
yea .. reading the manpage i tried a few
got errors
can't even fdisk it
thanks anyway
I never ran with XGL, aiglx i've found to be way nice
_Centauri_; i run AIGLX now. back with Xgl it was _bugggggyyy_
still is imo
I used to have XGL
it was buggy as hell
yeah
Used to run Dapper + Nviida 80.x Video driver + XGL with Old Beryl
Used to crash all the time
X would just restart spontaneously sometimes
and Video would corrupt if I maximized
Windows wouldn't always fill either
Aiglx is a huge step forward, now they just need to work to get this new compiz fusion thing to where its not buggy, and most importantly for me, make it so blender wont crash every time i switch windows
NETWizz; thats like... 1/8th the list :p
don't mean to come off as an ass .. jsut pretty frustrated
250gb pretty much gone
out of 2.5 tb than isn't much .. but it's still a lot of non replaceable stuff .. and i was buying a 500gb external at the end of the month to back it up too
irony.
only other thing i'd suggest is downloading the tools from the drive manufacturer. Sometimes they provide a bootdisk that can do drive repairs.
anyone ever register for a fedora account in the Fedora Account's system
I did years ago
I did a few months ago, I can't remember having any problems.
it won't accept my key
my id_dsa,pub
it's driving me crazy
I am trying to setup a mirror
they sure don't make this easy
does it give an error?
SSHv2 Public Key (attach your ~/.ssh/id_dsa.pub file here) (Invalid SSH key):
it's a valid key
#fedora-admin might be a better place to ask
fairly empty place
tried
oh, well
np
meto1; you sure do love your enter key.
yes i do
don't use irc much,
anything odd about the key? did you create it with openssh?
yes, with openssh
ssh-keygen -t dsa
that should work as far as i knoiw
should
but i get the above error
oddness, it's not important, time to file a bug report, maybe
hi, i am having severe issues with repeated kernel panics ... how do i investigate what is causing them ?
maelstrom; try booting to a different kernel
dmesg is helpful but if it's paniced then logs help if you can boot in with a different kernel
it happens with both my kernel versions i have currently installed
oh fun
it's getting too late for me to help people...
i might tell you something by acciedent that nukes your box :P
have you read http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Infrastructure/AccountSystem
yes
and http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Infrastructure/AccountSystem/NewAccount
I had tog et help with getting my accoutn set up properly when I did it
ohh
well, i read it
and the only error i get is the ssh one
I know on debian based systems, there exists deborphan to aid in removing libraries that were installed as dependencies but are no longer used. Does fedora (or yum itself) have a similar feature?
I've generated a proper key, but it just won't let me upload it, and the page reloads and spits out that error
not yet
EvilBob, k. thanks.
are kernel panics usually caused by hardware or software issues ?
yes
maelstrom
both
hmm I think I feel another one coming =/
hi
when i install xmms or amsn or something like this apps, is there an easy way to put icon to Applications menu?
i see there is a new kernel on yum... i wonder what the odds are that the update will solve my problems
install them how?
about 1 in 10, can't hurt to try
hodolo, you can use Alacarte to edit the menus, but everytime I've installed something via yum, it was in the menu
with yum
see what krypnos said
hodolo, it should be in the menu if you're using yum. Sometimes I had to log in or out for it to pop up though. (or restart gnome-panel)
how do i install the kernel headers
i installed xmms but i can't see it anywhere
you should just need to install kernel-devel
hodolo, if you open a terminal and run xmms does it open?
yes
sdodson, did that
hodolo, have you logged out and logged back in since you installed it?
is there a way to run applications completely console-independent?
no..
but i installed amsn and i can see it on menu now
i didn't logged out and logged in again too
hodolo, okay. usually I never had to but every once and a while I had to do that before some applications would pop up. Mplayer-gui was one for me to do that.
hodolo, you can try the log-in/log-out or run "killall gnome-panel" from a terminal to kill gnome panel.
hodolo, it should reload itself.
is there a way to search xmms icon on menu?
there may be an icon and i can't see that :s
hodolo, It should be in Sound & Video
Multimedia?
a little-known fact is that noise on the power-line's common mode can cause what people experience as "soft-errors" -- non-reproducible random bizarreness
hm i'm on kde now
it gets through most "surge protectors" and the like
this has been occurring for about a week though
hodolo, oh, my mistake. Sorry. I'm on gnome. I know that it's in a different location, but not where.
hodolo, my guess would be Multimedia
only way to stop it is with a power-conditioner (basically a transformer, that takes your electricity and cleans it up, producing clean sine-wave power that computers tend to like far more than square-wave power, and in addition it can suck down a 5000v hit without belching
http://www.powervar.com/Eng/PowerConditioners/prod_spc_st.asp might interest you
i can run apps with "app &" to run background but when i close console, app is quit too.. is there a way to run console independent application from console?
even something like a halogen desk lamp can produce enough noise on common mode to disrupt things occasionally if there's another source of noise on the lines
hodolo, there should be a "Run..." option in the kde menu, is there not?
i'll just see if my roommates are also having this issue. after all we all use the same power
I've had the PowerVar guy come to my house to demonstrate the thing, and he brought an old school ocilloscope with him so that I could visibly see what the condition of my power at the time was
really amazing to see how much a halogen lamp in our living room did to the power quality
hmm i found " nohup amsn & "
I turned on the living room light and he immediately asks "what did you do?", while looking at the ocilloscope readout
well /lib/modules/linux-xxx/build directory doesnt point to correct directory
they are'n't cheap but are worth every single penny
hodolo, well, if it works for you, that's great. I'd keep looking for that icon in the menu though, It should be there some where.
you know there's many stages of power conditioning within your computer, right?
a "surge supressor" will let any power spike through that doesn't actually cross the threshold of the supressor
the power supply itself taking constant hits is what ages them so quickly
anybody know what to do with:Error: Unresolveable requirement kernel-i686 = 2.6.21-1.3228.fc7 for kmod-nvidia
with a power conditioner in front of one, I daresay you'll see four times the lifespan out of one
I get that when I do an yum update
new kernel but not a new kmod-nvidia yet
that would be my guess
thank you krypnos. i added to kde menu now
wait a day or two and try again
hodolo, np. have fun
well how do I fix that? Do I just need to update the kernel?
I guarantee you that whatever power conditioning is inside your computer, it's not going to suck down a 5000v power spike and not even hiccup
let alone all the noise on common mode (normal mode is where you see the hard-errors)
does kernel develop set up the /lib/modules/ directories
btw - the .22 kernel's in updates-testing finally fixed the tickless timer bugs that were causing my lockups. no longer have to boot with "nohz=off" to get an uptime greater than a couple hours.
bbtw - the .22 kernel's in updates-testing finally fixed the tickless timer bugs that were causing my lockups. no longer have to boot with "nohz=off" to get an uptime greater than a couple hours. /b
we can only hope that CFS is as much fun
what's happened (my guess) is that you have a new kernel version out -- but the maintainer hasn't updated kmod-nvidia yet by building it against the new kernel -- so since you have kmod-nvidia installed and built against the old kernel it won't let you update until a new kmod-nvidia is
available
woot
don't use the nvidia driver or be patient, those are your two options.
for the time being do a (yum --exclude=kernel\* update
and that will update everything else
dhorner_sv, or borrow mine and ignore the unknown gpg signature -- http://jasonfarrell.com/fedora/7/i686/
heh
I called my ISP about my slow internet and they adjusted some things
Whoo. New gnome-python2-gtkmozembed came out
now i'm back up to a smooth 22mbit connection
22481 kbps (2810.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
714 kbps (89.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
10mbit is still faster than you can consume... unless you're talking HD
uhh... right
how about downloading from NZB?
robbins876, still more data than time in the day
I don't understand
im trying to play a video on mylaptop over myhome network. the video is on my mac. it wont play unless the video is actually on the laptop why?
my laptop is fedora
the codec on the laptop isn't capable of streaming? only a guess
does anyone have experience building/rebuilding source rpms?
grr
Anybody have a recommendation for a portable music player that works well with Linux and plays Ogg Vorbis?
the iAudio stuff works well. I have a U2 2GB
Cool. I have 8.8GB of music right now, and I was looking for a device I could put it all on.
It takes a good 15 seconds to start which sucks
Including any future albums I might get.
That is kind of long, but not terrible.
They make larger harddisk based units. 30GB or so.
I mostly want it to hook it into my car stereo.
Having nice playlist support like Rhythmbox would be a big plus.
I'll look at it. Is there any special software for *nix for it, or it just looks like a removable drive?
Mine doesn't do playlist, it's basically just a USB drive.
rhythmbox finds it and scans it when it's plugged in
How can I make a shortcut that will launch konqueror with root permissions?
Oh, the iAudio things do voice recording too, which is cool.
I could use it instead of my current voice recorder.
Oh, the iAudio 6 is only 4GB, though. :-(
Oh, the X5 is big, though. :-)
morning all
had a good night then?
looks like alot of what happens in help chans
whois EvilBob
got an X5L, and am very satisfied. It's also playing flac.
Cool.
pretty crazy night here in the ghetto
Yeah, that's what I'm looking at now.
:-) thanks for that link
:-D
What's the difference between the X5 and X5L?
disk size iirc
ghetto? where?
Okay.
X5L is 30GB
Looks like the X5L has a longer battery life, too, from the specs.
one of our neighbors is getting evicted so some of their friends were raising hell, kicking in windows and crap until the law showed up
Wow.
sheeesh.....which country you in?
USA
because it sounds like what might happen in some parts of the country here :-p
And it reads the Vorbis Artist/Title tags fine?
yes, of course. Never had problems so far, even with kanjis..
That's awesome. :-)
is this a mobile player that's being talked about?
though dont expect the video features to be really usable.
Fair enough. I wasn't planning to use those too much anyhow.
yep, cowon iAudio X5L
reads ogg, flac and some wma but not mp3 or do i have that wrong?
it's playing mp3, yes.
Since I installed FC7, I haven't been able to use the drive mount utility (on the gnome panel) to mount things unless I put them in fstab. In FC6, I could. what's a good way to make it so I can again?
BTW, 3 pirut.
Also, automounting CDs won't work unless I put them in fstab.
Did you do an upgrade from FC6?
ok, the cnet review i saw didn't mention anything about mp3, which i thought was odd
Because those really don't work well with F7.
like your haldaemon, or messagebus is down.
Clean install of FC7
onexused, Have you updated since the clean install? Bugs get fixed occasionally..
Maybe what you are seeing is a bug that's been fixed?
I know it's probably a long shot, but have you maybe heard of a portable media player called something like the "gsx2" or such? I first read about it two years ago...it's similar to the Sony PSP but opensource
I did an update in June, or so.
I know there's more by now, though
don't worry, I think I found it :-p
yup, www.gp2x.com
ps shows hald and dbus-daemon running. Would these be what you thought might not be?
Wow, I'm having a hard time finding them anywhere, online.
hai.
I can do an update again.
maybe something new is replacing them.
Yeah, perhaps.
The iAudio 6 is only 4GB, though.
and not as featurefurl iirc.
featureful
Yeah. And the iAudio 7 has no interface to speak of.
And its max size is 8GB, at the moment, apparently.
nope, i haven't
i think the X5 series is nearly 2 years old
check it out quickly, www.gp2x.com
so i was getting kernel panics increasingly often until they were about 20-30 mins apart, and now i upgraded to a new kernel and it's been probably an hour or so and everything's running fine....is it likely that my problems are fixed ?
also, I see that it does support SD card (and I figure that in general linux hosting does). can anyone maybe quickly help me to see if I can get mine working in f7? I'll paste an lspci output
doesn't look like it's for sale
they've got agents doing it for them
matrix?
I remember that because I wanted one but didn't have the cash back when I discovered it (was still in highschool)
http://rafb.net/p/Q2avuw60.html
dont expect to see usb devices with lspci -_-
nope, it's internal
so what ?
does that make it "not-usb" ?
good point :-p
I'll paste lsusb output too
never mind, it's definitely not USB :-)
you got a firewire controler, could be on that bus.
how would I check?
dunno. Never had firewire
It could also just be an IDE device.
IDE card reader ?
Could be.
never seen that. Though it's a laptop..
I think I had one, in an old case I got a while ago.
Well, not that old of a case.
hang on, I'm gonna check what hal-device gives me
I've also got a firewire port at the back, so I guess the firewire is linked to that..
hal-device output http://rafb.net/p/LGnFaE31.html
43: udi = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/pnp_WEC0518_mmc_host'
what scheduling program should I use if I want something to be run every 2 hours but the 1st run is to be when the computer starts?
or should I make a small app to do it?
likely at, or cron
what do you want to do ?
thanks anvil
I'll check some of it out when I get back
update a hostname
D". it didn't permit me to enter the pin. What can I
Anyone can help me? Thanks.
Thanks, everybody. :-) I'm going to see if I can find an X5L somewhere.
Later!
alex[slx] : "a hostname" ? The hostname of the system ?
alex[slx] : I dont see why you could need to do that every 2 hours or so
damn doing a yum update...
289 packages to install!
now, I worry I'm gonna mess something up
fingers crossed
the reason for this diatribe?
i've had trouble in the past with fc 2... so I hope things are better
well.. fc2 is what ? 3 years old ?
heh, ya it has been a LONG time
always a good idea to login to irc as root
while compiling glade-3 i get: configure: error: C++ preprocessor "/lib/cpp" fails sanity check
and the moral of the story is "install packages" ?
Anvil; but.. cpp, gcc and glibc-devel are installed...
read the message again.
yeah.. it doesn't say much
it's saying C++.
lazy is more like it
do elaborate
install the package .. don't compile
check the "config.log"
error trying to exec 'cc1plus': execvp: No such file or directory
ah
sorry, a domain name
dunno why I said hostname
alex[slx] : dyndns or something ?
everydns
using the eDNS perl script
well things look good!
you can hook such actions to network interfaces change of state, cannot you?
now I just need to reboot and see that I'm OK
I don't know
can I?
is a WAN address change a change of start of my ethernet card?
everything is possible. Though am not sure about the exact process.
s/start/state
ah p
ok*
lol
no
I need a shorter one
oh wait
no you are right wider
hehe
now I have both
hehehe
thanks
now that you and I have spammed the channel... what's the problem, alex[slx]?
I just need to update a domain host name to my ip address when it changes
use dyndns?
works for me.
I might use a php script I made to check my WAN address
against what? whatismyip.org or something?
no
summary.htm on my router
oh ok
and if it detecs a change, update it
that way my domain name will be unresolved for no more than five minutes at a time
so basically a home-brew dyndns
or something like that
yeah
I like to do things like that myself
what router do you use?
SpeedStream
some rubbish thing
very simple
SpeedStream 1337xah?
ummm
not sure, let me check
SpeedStream 4100/4200-Series
oh i'm just wondering how widely used it is
that's what i have for a modem. the 4100
yeah
router/modem
I don't have another router on the network, it just goes into a hub from there
can you do a whereis static ip hosting for me?
Is there any simpler way to set up file permissions that chmod every directory...any script/gui tool anything that makes the process easier, like when creating shell access to a box and defining user permissions.
alex[slx]; hmm?
I put a script of mine called 'ip' in /sbin/
well 1) you're masked
oh.
/sbin/ip
and I think I may have deleted something
overwritten
gj
shiz
hmmm
I think I'll just get the executable of my laptop
it's been so long since i saw a nice, long make terminal flying by :P
..that was short!
ahh, I put it in /usr/bin/
must rename it
w000! Glade3 is *really* easy to use
alex[slx] : dont put anything is /usr/bin manually.
how then?
symlink if needed
Anything not from a package belongs under /usr/local.
alex[slx] : use /usr/local if it has to be system-wide, if it's for a single user put it in ~/bin.
ahh
cheers
alex[slx] : and dont name it like a system command
alex_ip
hehe
alex[slx] : use explicit names.
wan-ip will do for now
I put wan-ip in /usr/local/
what about update-wan-hostname ? -_-
but I can't just type wan-ip
wan-ip only prints the current wan ip atm
I have to modify it
isn't /usr/local/ in my $PATH my defualt
should.
no
it isn't
however, /usr/local/bin/ is
And that would be the difference between "in" and "under".
ahh, sorry, skimmed over that a little too quickly
alex[slx]; if you want to add a path to your PATH i can help you there...
it's ok
but I will get you to explain it to me when I get back from dinner
bbl
i wrote a howto.
a simple one
http://fedorasolved.org/Members/downhillgames/change-the-default-path-for-users
when i figure out the problem with $EUID=500 i'll change it...
this way it gives *all* non-root users the full PATH. whatever.
Erm, why not just remove the if and fi lines? O_o
I mean, other than it not being strictly necessary to do any of that.
...why does it truely matter
it's not like that's for everyone by default
^rhetorical, of course
well as nice as glade-3 is, it's still missing stuff i use in gazpacho
hi everyone
Is the issue in Fedora 7 of not being able to turn the firewall off a known bug?
hello! I've got Fedora 6 5CD, but can't install it because files repomd.xml and primary.xml.gz in repodata directory are damaged. Could anyone email me these files?
my firewall is off
I go into the GUI alex and no matter how many times I set it to off, it never actually turns off.
hmmm... that's weird
indeed.
I want the damn thing down so that I can confirm that certain services are running.
waptaxi, Can't you just download them from one of the sites?
waptaxi; yum clean metadata
or try yum clean all
hi, ima getitng Failed to load module "ati" (module does not exist, 0) error
/etc/init.d/iptables stop
I think that'll do it
where can i get this ati module from
correct me if I'm wrong please, I don't use a firewall
you won't believe me but seriously... alex, that doesn't work either!
service iptables stop -- will stop your firewall
Solaris444; are you root when trying to this this?
he must be, you have to supply the root password to get to the gui
alex[slx]; you know what they say about people who assume. it makes an ass outta you and me
yeah
but you HAVE to be root to get to that GUI
ass_u_me... anyway
realbytecomputer; who, me?
Nah....nah....not at all....
yes
---first to be misunderstood out of a host of people
ok, i found the text interface
I'll try that
realbytecomputer; i was merely saying "don't rule anything out yet"
Solaris444; sudo setup ---?
if you can't even do it via /etc/init.d/ that's pretty bad...
what's the error anyway?
firewall won't go down.
hold on, I think I might have it.
eh, it *JUST* says [Failed] without an error?
no it doesn't give any arrer
*error
g2g, catchya later
thanks alex
well the text based one let me bring it down.
but the gui firewall tool lets you set it to disabled.
Strange...
Then you apply and close it.
Then when you open it again, the firewall is still set to enabled.
and the firewall is still up.
for some reason also, apparently samba is not running despite the fact that I have set it to enabled.
nor is vnc
Solaris444, Has this machine been rebooted as of late?
s/botched/Botched/
Just for general info...
should i download fedora or live when in linux/distributions/fedora/releases/7/
yes it has been reboot
*rebooted
also it is a fresh install
using ONLY the official repositories
with only official updates.
the only software installed that is not from redhat/fedora
is one piece of cli software that seems to be very well behaved and is used for checking the RAID status.
shouldn't i be able to just use my windows box to browse to the machine's ip address and see the file shares?
*should*
right.
so samba isn't running correct?
because I should also be able to hop onto the box and go smb://localhost/
and get a list of file shares correct?
anyone ^^?
Ominous; that all depends on what you want on the disc.
sorry was afk
if you want to browse online or chat on IM or whatever while it downloads and installs packages, grab the KDE live disc
if you want to install of DVD... get the DVD :P
they are the same thing except the DVD isn't live so you can't chat and stuff
while it installs..
thanks
np
sorry i can't be more friendly n what not ^_~ it's 5:30AM...
np
oh this is brilliant.
this is absolutely brilliant.
telling fedora to start the vncserver does nothing either.
Solaris444, Er - sorry - was dealing with my two year old - mate - have you thought of using webmin for doing tasks like this? They comppletely bypass most of the "system" setup stuff that comes out of the box with Fedora - great for server administration - and for doing things like setting
up/disabling services - and especially for dealing with Samba...just an FYI
i had considered it.
but someone was telling me yesterday that webmin should be consigned to the dustheap.
and that it was no good
hmm... er... how do I get a remote desktop set up for fedora?
Oh. Ok. Well, having used it for years to do remote server administation, I reckon I should listen (not)
lol
ok sure thing
i got the vncserver process started.
it's now listening.
but it doesn't show me a desktop at all.
I like using it for several reasons - it gives you complete control over a box that ain't near you - it gives you access to seldom accessible things - and it works.
Er...you have to setup a "desktop" for each user using VNC...
Is that what you're wanting - to have a remote desktop session going?
yes
I have no objection to using webmin
I've never used it.
So I'm open to suggestions.
But I would also like remote desktop access yes.
From another linux box, or other?
either.
I can install tightvnc on windows.
Well, you can ssh into the box you're mucking with from a linux box and just run programs as such - but the Winders bit yah, VNC is the option.
from my suse box, I use the krdc, from windows i use tightvnc
yes but... I can't get any kind of remote desktop running
so that's something to look for in the docs - I ain't done that in a while - I choose to use ssh instead
Honestly, this is a 100% clean install with only the official updates applied.
oh. In suse I just tick a little box that says "enable remote desktop"
Solaris444, On the box you're mucking with, you should - SHOULD turn off VNC, setup the session per user, then restart the service.
and er... it works.
hold on, so I have to log in on an actual keyboard first?
er... sorry, log in locally first.
sistempreferencesinet, networkremote desktop Solaris444
then start vnc
ah ok thanks crash
sorry, where am i looking for preferences?
I click on K Menu, System... I don't see anything that says preferences.
gnome here
How do you do chmod 700 on a directory for just a specific group?
ahhhh
any idea where that could possibly be in kde.
no
ok I'll see what I can find
hmm
Hi all. Is there any way to install fedora7 on a usb stick, but with persistence activated, just as it was possible under ubuntu?
there is a login preference window
that allows me to set remote login
i found how to install a livecd to usb stick, but nothing is said about persistence. Will the installer take care of this?
gday
anyone awake?
somewhat..
awake enough to try and help out?
Awake? it's nearly 20:00
0
so it's better to ask
I have troubles with gnome/xorg in FC6
cant turn on desktop effects...
only says DEsktop effects couldnnot be enabled
muumi, have you looked at the Fedorasolved.org site yet?
didn't find anything on the subject
but I didnt search too hard tho
muumi, Look for "compositing" and also the sections dealing directly with the graphics driver you're using.
under video solutions or?`
so it's worth a look, that is, if you want to have the effects...
Should be
justinstalle the ati package from livna..
but it didnt say anything of the effectspart or changing the xorg.conf file..
I think I managed to sort out samba.
I thought it would run be default though.
*shrugs*
but as always ..discovering problems is not new..
never mind it's sorted now.
hence why I moved to F7 - it came ready out of the box - compositing and the whole nine yards. Beryl worked within the first 10 minutes after the installation was comleted. Love it.
couldnt get the DVD to boot, hangs after saying ready when unpacking kernel
muumi, You can pass params to the kernel at the fist screen - you hit ESC, then type in: linux acpi=off noapic pci=bios dma
Also - you might want to d/l the MD5 and double check it was burnt properly - and downloaded properly.
itworked fine on two other pcs
tried with noprobe options but but..
muumi, Er - have you got a CDROM drive cleaning disk?
no..but the dvd drive works fine with everything else...
but maybe I'll just skip F7and stick with FC6 until F8
muumi, Another option is to "borrow" the drive from one of hte other machines and use it for the installation - remove it after the installation cuz by that time you'll be using the repos online intead of the local media
thats abit tricky, the others were laptops
muumi, Well, cleaning the drive is an option (should be done often anyways - dirt and dust)
yepyep
and then to try and install from a usb memory or something
coz the rescue cd didnt work either
(and gentoo worked fine
anyone have any idea why I am getting a "file or folder does not exist" error when trying to browse the samba shares stored on my fedora machine?
because the file doesnt exist ?
are you int eh correct palce ?
(EE) AIGLX: Screen 0 is not DRI capable
can you install the live version without internet and then only download the rest that is needed when you have internet?
?
Yes.
Solaris444, Is the share setup and publically browse-able?
supposed to be
i set it to visible.
What do the logs say?
Solaris444, And i'll assume after making changes to the shares you've restarted samba, right?
Solaris444, And you've modified the /etc/samba/smb.conf so that the workgroup is the name of the workgroup you're using?
I'm browsing directly to the IP address.
Er....mine works.
*sigh* I haven't had a very good first impression of Fedora 7 here.
and I see my workgroup, and I see my server, and I see my shares...
very fast and very slick.
but... a lot of stuff seems to just mysteriously not work.
Sorry to tell ya this, but mine works like a champ mate.
:/
Well like I said, its a clean install.
I've installed F7 on a heap of computers in the past month - since it came out...
I can see my shares.
But when I double click to open them apparently they don't exist.
Dunno. This laptop I'm on was a clean installation - nothing mucked up except for ME mucking something up - but that was easily fixed...
I hate to tell you this, but 98% of the problems we see here are a misunderstanding of how things work or something similar.
How true how true how true
Some people trip over the features that Fedora has which other distros don't.
is most of the issue.
SELinux is a big one.
Erf...GAWD what a horrible thing to have on a workstation....servers, yeah - workstations? Nah.
It has its purposes, even on a workstation.
i can understand that.
Ok - true. But for me, here at my home lab, I already have a firewall and secured server solution, so the workstations are just workstations (except for the Windows ones - they're boat-anchors)
but I do have several years linux experience.
I CAN use the command line.
I just choose not to.
i installed webmin.
There was a time I remember when it was SO bloody tough to setup X and an SVGA monitor that I did everything just using the console. Was great in those days. Didn't really care about X at all. Could still use my mouse, and that was fine and dandy.
Looks like the fedora samba configuration tool doesn't work properly.
matter of face, was running a 32 line BBS on a Slackware installation.
It didn't create a samba user.
I went into webmin looking for samba users. Nope. no samba users. lol
If you've found a bug, then log it.
oh I will.
I've had several bugs fixed in SuSE too.
biggest one I found earlier was that the gui firewall tool doesn't actually bring down the firewall.
Solaris444, That's strange cuz it worked for me when you brought it up - er, mentioned it
odd.
well I see some other reports on the forums of the same bug.
perhaps it is specific to machines with 2 NICs,
This computer has eth0 and eth1
perhaps I should deactivate in bios the one that isn't plugged in.
that might be messing up all kinds of things.
What - one built into the mobo?
yes, the mobo has dual gigabit ethernet.
it dosent matter if i burn the live cd image onto a dvd does it?
No.
I mean, unless you don't have a drive that can read burned DVDs.
ok thanks
what chipset are the onboard ones?
Does fedora have default users and passes on it?
no
would be a security issue, dont you think ? -_-
when you install it, it has a root user account you configure a password for
the livecd does infact have a default user account
because it's a prebuilt os on a cd that boots
morning anvil
yeah well I know it would be a security issue, but what is with all the accounts
like apache
would you rather the apache webserver or the sendmail mail server ran as root with the associated permissions?
I understand that but I was wondering if that has a password that could be used to access through ssh
Qodosh, apache, etc. accounts don't have passwords and can't be used.
that's what I was wondering, thank you.
would you also get an avc:denied read, if a file didn't exist?
i'm analysing some log
how come x_86 of xorg-server dont provide /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libdri.so ?
rpm -qf /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libdri.so
xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.3.0.0-9.fc7
yes but xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.3.0.0-9.fc7.x86_64 doesnt
you are using i386, right ?
um..you have looked in lib64, right?
cause, you know, the 64 bit libraries and all..
oops, right ...
both are marvell gigabit ethernet
yukon probably
hmm
I have a whole bunch of dual NIC machines, and the only problem I've found is iptables starts between the two NICs
so it goes eth0, iptables, eth1
Screen 0 is not DRI capable
so my NAT rules don't work
well, I'll file a bug report anyway
I've got the tui too to work
just not the gui tool
grep libdri /var/log/Xorg.0.log
does it try to stop it at all?
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libdri.so
which doesnt exist
aha
why isnt it looking in lib64 instead
good question
did you try hitting the tower with the keyboard a few times? I've found that sometimes works
did you try hitting the tower with the keyboard a few times? I've found that sometimes works
that's enough out of you..
any specific type of keyboard required?
evil_steve, its a 64 bit xorg-server
I only use cheap hosting ones, cause they break when you hit a tower case with them.
I can see a trend developing here
that's for random buzzing noises emanating from the tower
oh..I use a shoe for that
that might be where I"m going wrong
