Hi there

rc.local

I just installed tcl via yum. Now I need to find where yum placed the files.. how do I find out?

rpm -ql tcl

thanks!

lol finding an internal wifi card for my laptop that works with linux is a bit trying

as root 'chkconfig NetworkManager on'

Ok.. that's where I thought.. I am trying to install an eggdrop, but it says tcl version is too old (which it is not).. I updated the tcl libs, how do I make sure something recognises the correct version?
something like ldconfig?

you might need to install tcl-devel

I just did yum list tcl*.. and I figured I might
thanks!

np

That worked!
Thanks a hoot!

heh I found a solution ! pick up a pro wireless 2915 abg mini pci card from ebay!

hie where can i get fedora core 7 ...

you can't

Nowhere.

fedoraproject.org

there was a core dump

its just Fedora 7 ow

why not

what package provides mysqld?

read kc8hfi's post

yum provides mysqld

try the "yum provides" command

nono

I guess some people get a heart attack when they get answered "no you can't"...shame, poor hearts

I nwat to install mysql

yum provides mysqld

yum install mysql apparently only installs the client
mysqld isn't present

try the "yum provides" command

yum provides mysqld

g'night all

no matches found
see, I don't have mysqld installed
I need to know how to install it

yum search mysql

what is ow ?

the php mysql web hosting package doesn't provide mysqld

your skull is thick

gah

MySQL-server provides mysqld

EvilBob, hi !

mysql-server.i386 -- couldn't someone have just mentioned that?
thank you

No. You learn nothing from it.

Try mysql-server

i think thats a big problem nowadays, nobody wants to ltearn anything

np

kc8hfi, i guess we will need to start kicking people who are spoonfeeding

yum search mysqld

Southern_Gentlem, yeah, I'd hate to get kicked because I do that sometimes. but when people make remarks like shiba dis.....
s/dis/did
more than likely goes to show they probably don't care that much in the first place

kc8hfi, they are junkies, they want that quick fix
they dont want to read, explore there logs configs etc

now. Now. NOW!

those are the kinds of people who call themselves system admins, who aren't worth much

Can some one help me set up a Samba server for my company
BANG your dead

easy. press the 'setup somba buttin'

Why did you have to example with my question?

hmm, I can see what you're getting at -- but which channel, then, would they visit to ask that question?

EvilBob, sure @375/hr + air+hotel+food

Let us see, you are getting paid, you told your boss you could do it, we know how to do it so you stole food off my kids table because I did not get hired to do the job you can't do.... yeah sure let me help you... NOT

vallor google and or tlsp.org site

not that I set up samba servers anymore, just an example

tldp.org

well, rather than a "bang, your dead", I'd help the guy find his local LUG, from which (hopefully) he could find a pro to sit down with him that wont' cost $375/hr + air/food/hotel
but the guy shouldn't expect free help, I certainly understand that frustration

samba.org has some of the best documentation in the OSS Documentation game

vallor, some bloke doing a home network i agree

heck, setting up a samba server host in an org with no samba experience could be an example of "guerilla networking" -- that sort of thing used to happen over at santarosa.edu all the time

someone setting up their companies samba and doesnt want to take the time to go read deserves it, and when their bosses here that price tag they will really have to look at the specs of that persons job

hello mspevack hope yu had a good vacation

lol

with hookers and blackjack

how can i install a server version of FC?
so no GUI, etc.

centos

use the gui installer, choose what packages you want

lol Im watching a highway chase on cnn at my hometown.... they've passed my apartment twice already

centos, hmm I'll give it a miss :p

f_newton, maybe the chase helicopters will collide... again

few are ready to be upgrading a server every 12 months with fedora

centos

eth01, because of fedoras short lifespan we dont recommend it for server envirnoment

eth01, just don't install X11 packages/DE's/WM or things that depend on X11

lifespan?
ah, right.

yes lifespan
fedora releases have a lifespan of 13 months, where centos/rhel have lifespans of 7 years

can you install centos using the first 2 isos?
if so, then I guess I'll just use C5.

How do I generate this?SSHv2 Public Key (attach your ~/.ssh/id_dsa.pub file here):

oh geez

cmon its probably stupid

jimPy, signing the CLA?

yes

there are links on there that shows you step by step

for gpg

jimPy, ssh-keygen

yes

thanks

those were news helicoptors but we had one from dallas crash this morning

jimPy, with -t dsa (since it generates rsa by default, iirc. rsa's "faster", but dsa is v2-only)

it was some old dude running from the police.. he wont soon do that again
lol
the only way to run from the police is to get away before they start looking for you

that dont matter
they just shoot ya

people some silly fool overwrite a whole load of libraries accidentally - whats the best hosting way to reinstall the OS but hopefully keeping all additional data?

turistas DVD .. maybe get your organs removed and sold

(and yes that silly fool was me!)

lol opsec
ikk try upgrade option

would that work ok keeping the same release i know its old but atm i want to stay with FC5

i can usually stand to see even the most grotesque and harsh things .. couldn't watch the organ removal in turistas .. too realistic

ikk if you use the fc5 disk yes

excellent - just got to wait for someone to get to the datacenter to stick the disk in so i can give it a shot damn remote machines!

but staying with fc5 is not really a good choice. Next time install your /home on a seperate partition and fresh install every time leaving the /home partition intact
google linux host partitioning if you need assistance

i use FC5 as i have no issues with openVZ using it - not really tried with FC6 or even FC7 at this time, is there any feedback in here about using either of these with a newer version?

ikk the problem is FC5 is EOL, means no updates and no support
no i havent tried openVZ

lol

but you could always put fc6 or f7 in a vm and test it

hehe i do actually have them running in a vz - just not as the main HN

oh if we had a quarter for every time we heard someone running an EOL fedora release we could quit our day jobs

EvilBob, lol
tbh dont run a lot of linux machines - mainly freebsd - so ill use that as an excuse to ignorance
how hard to update from FC5-FC6 remotely?

you can do a network install of f7 thats the latest version

how hard is it to do a bunch of work for a baby step forward that will just need to be repeated again soon?

EvilBob, nah.... i need mo money!

so fedora7 is recommended as being nice and stable them?

sure its great
but if you want something to stay with I dont think bsd has been updated in years lol

if its stable is arguable

its stable for me

:P

as stable a a 13 year old girl getting her period for the first time"

lol

give me confidence!

lol yer funny EvilBob
ok yer smart and charismatic
lol

Oh wait, I was thinking Rawhide

:P
Rawhide eats babies

unless of course anyone knows how i can fix this issue :
# ls
/lib/tls/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.4' not found (required by ls)
is what i get on every command i try
as i said some fool overwrrote some libs

no you need to do a clean install
choose something other than FC5

was meant to do a test on tar but accidentaly done an extract - doh!

=P

so FC6 or FC7 - the confidence of EvilBob had made me think FC6 maybe best for a small period of time

http://fedorasolved.org/installation-solutions/installing-fedora-using-pxe-images

centos is better if you dont want to update all the time

I would use CentOS if you have any long term plans for this machine

F7 is just as stable as FC6
and FC5

zcat, the problem is that i cant wget lynx or anything like that - and i cant scp to it from an external machine
i do however have a KVM over IP on it - if that makes it possible?
nope thats no use cant even start a tty

is there something like pirut, but in terminal?
like aptitude for debian

is it possible to request a specific ip address host with dhclient?

oh well me bits the bullet and waits for someone to go to the datacenter and see what disks we have there

wamty, man dhclient.conf look for fixed-address ip-address;

Im at work, i want to be able to access blocked sites thru my home server
i run FC4

FC4 is DEAD
FC4 is EOL

any help? (think i have to setup a proxy but not sure)

Pay me a qarter
quarter

Fc4 is antique :P

./dcc send Evilbob .25

lool

ok ok already i have fc4 tho
side question then (whats easiest way to upgrade to 7....can i do that with yum?)

we can not support FC4 it is no longer getting security updates

I threw out my fc4 copy yesterday

i cant throw it away tho, i have a few things running on it

I would use the FC6 install media to get to FC6

mv /home/evilbob/money* /home/cyberspy

lol

lol at mv

AmosT, sshd has a built-in SOCKS proxy. ssh -fND 1080 myhomeserver.com

xd

AmosT, then use localhost:1080 within firefox and other apps that use socks

FC6 has a few months left for updates

cp /home to a external drive and do a clean install from the F7 dvd
thats the best way to upgrade
or livecd

or use partitioning software and cp /home to that partition

k, what about all my php, apache, and all the stuff already running,, i hafta reinstall everything?

LiveCDs are not intended for upgrades
I would never even think abotu suggesting such a thing

yes =\

of course, what was i thinkin
which is why i still have fc4 now

ok, never tried the livecd's
hmm

FC6 upgrade just fine

ahh ok thanks a bunch

maybe you can modify the repo-files and do a yum upgrade, but really wouldnt recommend it, as it would probably break you system

lol im at work now tho and trying to figure it out how to access blicked sights

what is wrong with F7? o.O

yeah im scared of yum upgrade
my idea to upgrade was to just setup another machine, and try to duplicate as much as i can

ok

lol upgrading never works well unless you are very very experienced

i think i'll have a problem with passwords and stuff

2 version upgrades get some testing more than that do not

I usually just save my home directory on a dvd or cdrom

ok

im about to try your idea tho
appreciate it

lol upgrading
5 pounds of crap in a 2pound bag

i should have never said fc4 =]
lol u guys are making me feel old

=P

No

AmosT, not you just your version

f_newton is OLD

lol EvilBob

lol

I was in that mud

Sorry about that, I had to go...

lol ya hear that EvilBob he's 30

young punks

yeah...

so am i, but i don't feel old yet. nothing aching, not bitter (much), still sex0ring.

New knees this year, new hip next year, repaired back already...
I ache

I still have all my old parts..... I ache too
i even have all my teeth, though a couple are in a small tin on the mantle

LOL
they asked if I wanted my wisdom teeth, I said "hell no they stunk in my mouth I don't want them hanging around"

lol I still have three of my wisdom teeth in the ol jaw
one had to be removed cuz it broke the tooth next to it

I have ldap for user auth setup when loggin in, can I use postfix and pam, so I dont have to query ldap server host directly?

Of course.

trying to ssh to a RHEL3 host, ssh -vvv gives: Warning: no access to tty (Bad file descriptor).

hi all!
can anyone give me some feedback?

Got cash?

I can run one-off (noninteractive) commands. I've ensured that /dev/pts and udev are both mounted properly (best I can tell).

RyukZilla, repeat your question

hi all!

* VileGent (n=notfred@unaffiliated/southerngentlem/x-2894754) has joined #fedora

can anyone give me some feedback?

How would I get fedora to mount my USB device?

oh, hi Vile!

I suggested a business deal rather than a gift

well Im new to the Server world but I know a bit about how this is done, the only thing I do not know, is which OS to use as for stability, speed and secureness

CentOS

rhel or centos

ugh stupid job

ok, and what about fedora and ubuntu?

lol ok i want to try this while im ont he channel

do you want to know our opinion or should we lie to you?

ur opinion =P

you asked about the best server OS we told you CentOS oe RHEL
s/oe/or
we are not going to sit here and argue with you

omg ._. i didnt come here to fight T_T I just wanted some advice

RyukZilla, fedora isnt recommended for production because of its short lifespan
13 month vs 7 years for centos/rhel

so, is CentOs, Free? and if it is, shoul i Google it n_n?

RyukZilla, yes

okey, is CentOS For linux right im sorry for my noob questions

i would recommend Ubuntu as a server OS, it is more of a desktop distro
centos.org
i would NOT recommend Ubuntu for servers either

so Vile for a server with the following specs, which should the Version of CentOS be installed? Intel Xeon Dual Core 1.86 Ghz, 2gb ram , 32/64 bits support, blabla

try #CentOS

RyukZilla, what are you wanting the server to do

well, its for gaming purpouses (A MMORPG game server)

and EvilBob is correct that ? is off topic for this channel
well will you game server run under x64

the emulator has the compability of running on 64 bits server

mot, selam

NewWorldPatriot, now what is your problem

nothin.,. :-)

EvilBob, I don't no

actually, I was just wondering how "secure" I could get fedora...

so secure you could give someones the root password and they cant do anything

Ummm Ok..
that's pretty dam secure..
now, is fedora based on the same source codeas Redhat?

other way around
rhel is based on fedora

ahhh cool..
well, that answers a lot then..
I just got Fed. & live CD.. what kinda of package manager does it have..

yum
you use it kinda like apt-get if you have used debian/ubuntu earlier

yum for the win

yum install *packagename* for example

ok yes, I am familiar with apt-get

AmosT, do what?

was just saying yum is good, but im trying to acess "blocked" sites from work using a proxy

so, say I wanted all my ports closed except for a few like HTTP, Torrent port, etc.. that doable??

EvilBob, where did the selinux docs that used to be in docs.fedoraproject.org

NewWorldPatriot, fedora is a pure open source os

Vilegent, http://dpaste.com/15641/

i hate not being able to get it

AmosT, one minute he is talking about changeing the livecd xorg.conf

AmosT, okey
sorry

then next fc6
he is all over the place with tangents

Vilegent, i prefer secants

I keep on this error in my dmesg and on my console http://rafb.net/p/rlPD0q25.html . What is it supposed to mean?

but there must be a reason, a single reason hes trying to do that
just not explaining himself good

AmosT, i retired my jack hammer and dentistry tools

hehehe

Vilegent,
Dreamore, turkish translater

I still have mine!
they're gasoline powered

uh oh

hmmm is he just ttrying to translate his output to turkish?

/dev/dsp doesn't output white noise

Indian_Knight, what device is ide secondary master

i can't figure out what's wrong with my sound!

is zcat still here?

I think it's the DVD drive but is there anyway to check this using the console?

My friend, cyber_cop has a problem. Can you help him?

AmosT, what

he is beyond help can you tell him that?

Pardus 2007.2

oh i bet the bios update disabled it!

GNU/Linux

sry to botha ya gn, but the command u gave me, i tried it, spit out a few things, not sure if it workd tho
http://rafb.net/p/CQRMyf61.html
since it has the "bind already in use" i have a feeling its not going to work

AmosT, so pick another port

ohhh duhh
ok thx
trying it

we have tried to help him several times but he will never stop, shut up and listen to instructions enough to get ANY WHERE

Dreamore, if you can get a definte problem out of him maybe

Problem about him is language.

Dreamore, he didnt follow the directions he was given last week

And I'm here for translating.

problem is he will not follow directions

Dreamore, what is his problem

i tried 1380 said same thing

He said that, your sentences is helpful. But there is a problem.

Dreamore, what is his problem?

I kiss you!

You said him, write some commands on console?
He says he can't login on console.

think it has to do with the hostname? (fyi: im using a dynamic Host (dynip))

Dreamore, from the beginning what is his problem

(anyone?)

Dreamore, on livecd or what

because no home user Vilegent

Black screen he said, on boot.

Elliot I punch you!

Dreamore, on livecd or what

home user login after root login

Not live cd.

cyber_cop, hush

I better not quit my day job for life as a comedian.

LOL
I hope not

Dreamore, what version of fedora
home directory is not needed for root

tried a couple more ports, all give me the same "bind: Address already in use"

He says Fedora 7 core.
How can he login on console as root without an user account?

yes

root should have been created at install time

root is created during the install
if it didnt, how did he download and install f7

Mm. He says a password wanted on installation. And than, what is username? root?

NOT ALL DISTROS ARE AS PSYCHOTICALLY ANTI-ROOT AS UBUNTU. GET OVER IT.

yes root

heh

Don't point me. I'm here for just translation.

hi, what is the default window manager for Fedora these days? is it GNOME?

Dreamore, that doc had the answer
abstrakt, yes
Dreamore, which i think there may be a turkish version as well

after Dreamore/Cyber think someone cna throw a few more ideas my way?

ok thought so thanks

So, thank's. I told him about it. He must login as root by this way, and must give the command you said ha?

login as root
yum update

Unless you get the Fedora KDE release
In which casae it will be KDE
case*

reboot
runlevel 3
system-config-display --reconfig
as root

i just want to setup a simple proxy so i can access "blocked" websites from work

you are running FC4, you need to upgrade

so r u saying i cant do it at all with fc4?
just cant b tru

Thank you, I hope he will solve the problem.

AmosT, fc4 is DEAD
and has been so for almost a year

I am saying AGAIN we will not help you with your insecure system

so its not possible to do it, or u guys just wont help with it

DEAD = no updates, no support

right

*sigh*
so if i had fc7 how would i do it?

fc4 is not supported in #fedora; you just need to setup a squid or apache based proxy

wouldnt it b the same command?

well my F7 sound is borked, anyone want to take a crack at this? :P

AmosT, if you learn how to you can write your own security updates but the fedora dev team stopped a long time ago

gotcha

now reboot

AmosT, http://giyf.us/apache+proxy+fedora http://giyf.us/squid+proxy+fedora

downhillgames, not without handons access

whats up downhillgames ?

thx damaes

a few days ago i was trying to fix a NWN sound issue so i installed PulseAudio -- which didn't do anything helpful, it's a NWN bug -- and today my sound just died on me. no rhym or reason

downhillgames, and did you remove pulse audio

yes
i reinstalled esd (esound) just now... rebooted even...

downhillgames, as much as i have seen you mess with this box i am almost to the point to tell you to clean install

seen me mess with the box?
half the stuff i ask is for a box upstairs

downhillgames, how do i install this and that

what is your sound card downhillgames ?

does anyone know what the name of the gvim package is?
e.g. yum install vim-gnome ?

Vilegent; that was for a different pc. off the high-horse, please.

ABSTRAKT!

teh Daveman!!!

lol

\o/

downhillgames, i wasnt on a high horse

f_newton; Realtek AC'97

man its been snippy in here all day

im in ur channel, readin ur chatz
f_newton huhu

that should work right off the bat

Vilegent; perhaps not... either way that's irrelevant to this sound problem

i'm in ur hoes steelin ur smakz

\o/

Daveman; was it you who helped me set up PulseAudio?

yum provides gvim

downhillgames, dubious.

Daveman; wha?

EvilBob, much to daMaestro's dismay, yum does not provide snacks
or any other form of delectables :p

downhillgames, what does system-config-soundcard do when you identify the proper soundcard and test for sound?

Daveman, getting old

ahh

f_newton; nothing.

downhillgames, and it worked on install

I suggest reading the yum man page and help

Vilegent; it worked yesterday. i haven't done anything w/ packages other than gallery2 since then

Vilegent, excuse me?

do you have the little speaker icon with or without the red x downhillgames /
?

f_newton; ...it's not muted lol

do you have the icon?
thats what Im asking

in the notification tray? yeah

ok check your speakers.... use a pair of earphones if you have em

/dev/audio

:P

f_newton; i have headphones on and my stereo turned about 3/4th up

i'm not actually on fedora atm

/dev/dsp and got nothing

would you be kind enough as to tell me what the result of 'yum provides gvim' is?

heh

you were running from your pre amp output jack?

Got paypal?

f_newton; was and am, but now i plugged in headphones too... note: my config hasn't changed 1 bit

lol EvilBob
downhillgames, you could have pulled too much currrent through the card as well

it is like vim-X11

if your card didnt load you wouldnt have the icon in the taskbar

i use S/PDIF ...
i'm sure it's fine.

.0.235-1.fc7

well I always check hardware with known good before I start worrying about a mystery change in software when its sudden

thanks guys

oh well
those r just searches that ive already tried
thanks for trying for those who did....il keep looking

hmmm if alsa has control of /dev/dsp would cat urandom at it cause any noise

lol

f_newton; radio works. it's not the stereo itself. config hasn't changed. that leaves what? drivers and broken apps. it wont work on whateverthheck i try... maybe a driver? but the same driver has been working on THIS kernel... sounds like a mystery to me

the soundcard could have blown it does happen

unlikely

do you understand the scientific principle downhillgames ?
challenge all untill you remove every excuse.... the one that remains is the culprit

of course

now there are several possibilities as I see it just from what you described

i didn't come here for a lecture :/
snd_pcm 74949 4 snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm_oss

not trying to lecture but to repair via a chat room I must remove every option. I know you are frustrated but a close examination of irrefutable facts will reveal the proper direction

heck, i'll paste lsmod

exit

http://rafb.net/p/VXVoJE57.html

Dreamore,

lately I have wanted to perform a very minimal installation or two of Fedora (that runs at runlevel 3 and has no graphical environment)...but it seems there is no easy way to do this
other than manually removing all the extra stuff
is there an easier way, anyone?

oh snap. VLC is playing sound
quietly

epkphoto, selecting custom during the install

the like of Debian and Ubuntu make it quite easy with a minimal installation option

S/Pdif only tho

and only selecting what you want
epkphoto, then run debian or ubuntu

right Vilegent, and then you have to uncheck a bunch of stuff...and the runlevel is still set to 5
i do...

Vilegent, open my console

i was just wondering if I missed something

in command system-config-display --reconfi
in command system-config-display --reconfig

epkphoto, so you cant edit inittab

yep...that's what i did eventually

and black screen

cyber_cop; compiz?

don't configuration

epkphoto, if you do a text install the runlevel is set to 3 initially
epkphoto, if you want minimal, you have to craft your own kickstart file

interesting, that's why I was asking

cyber_cop; root console? yes no?

cyber_cop, you havent had time to update

epkphoto, even then, it's around ~800MB.

root console
yes
don't problem
root and
command

babel fish
don't problem

and black screen

cyber_cop, talk to your tranlator

is the idea of a minimal install something that fedora has moved away from in the past?

Vilegent, translator disconnected

it wouldn't require a different set of media, just an option in anaconda

epkphoto; ? you can do a minimal install...

epkphoto, most users dont need this function
and since fedora's short lifespan it is not recommend for production

Vilegent, I stand translator and I shut up

f_newton; VLC outputted low-volume audio. a music video (.flv).
f_newton; maybe i should try an old kernel?

http://rafb.net/p/Eyx6zv90.html -- can someone tell me what's wrong with my fstab? I keep getting "EXT3-fs: Unrecognized mount option "uid=500" or missing value"

well im thinking you lost one of your pre amp outputs and as a result your outputs are below standard

downhillgames, check your mixer. also, sometimes you'll just get crappy media with low audio, so you have to max the vol to hear it.

but I assumed you already checked all your outputs

zcat; it's not the music video and my sliders don't control the output through S/PDIF... they are maxed anyway
f_newton; "all my outputs" meaning the physical jacks? the ... or the ... or the ... lol

ok lets review the three stages of amplification

heh
http://rafb.net/p/Eyx6zv90.html -- can someone tell me what's wrong with my fstab? I keep getting "EXT3-fs: Unrecognized mount option "uid=500" or missing value" -- anyone?

one is the initial signal agitation second is intermediate amplification which brings the pre amp signal to the primary amplification stage

he's gone

the third is primary amplification
lol ok

think you could help me?

by the way LyosNorezel I did not find any of the seperate cards you were looking for but I did have a mainboard with it included
remote lights out I mean

umph... ok

sorry

can't use any more motherboards...

LyosNorezel, you don't specify a uid for ext3. ext3 has its own user perms.

yeah well its kind of a big one

I have way too many of those as it is
lol

lol me too

My ext3 runs as Administrator.

then how do I set it so it'll automount with user permissions? ie., user has full control?

Making up mount options at random doesn't make them magically work.

heh
If you need a user to have permissions, man chown

it's not random
I set those folders to be mount points

"set those folders to be mount points" is a nonsense statement, of course.

Why would you need to try to modify the uid on those, man chown

you can "chown" and entire drive?
s/and/an

Vilegent, your xorg.conf paste please

But anyway, where in the documentation does it say that this made-up option works?

You chown the mountpoint and files under it.

I've been using that same mount point since FC4

These are ext3 right, not FAT?

yes... ext3

ls -ld /home/LyosGeminiNorezel/Desktop/DataDrive1
That's fat :P

I think you could add user or users option to your fstab

erm... actually that one is fat...
the other two are ext3

but verify by man mount
:-)

Does that mount work at all? No partition?
woman mount

yes
that one automounts just fine

Okay then, ls -ld /home/LyosGeminiNorezel/Desktop/Video

hmm. can't update wine in updates-testing because it thinks libGL.so.1 is missing, which it isn't

I get getting "J-type pciture is not supported" when trying to run a .wmv I know this used to work on FC6 so I'm guessing I'm missing a package but I'm not sure which one. Anyone know?

One more time... where in the documentation does it say that an ext3 mount accepts that option? Hint... it doesn't.

Ive upchucked wine in many places zcat .... thats why I stick with whiskey now

it's not mounted at the moment

That mountpoint still exists, yes?

I'm trying to rebuild gnupg from source and it is reporting that it can't find the pth libraries

yes

f_newton, i get "Nothing to do" ???

however, I have pth-devel installed, which depends on pth.i386...

It's owned by your user?

I usually get dry heaves...

yes

Then just change that uid junk to efaults

hmmm

try mount -o users /your/dev/ /your/mount/point

why in the world are you using wine zcat?

config.log reports that the linker can't find lpth, but I see it right there in /usr/lib

Oh, but he's been doing it THAT way since FC4, so OBVIOUSLY it must be the documentation that's wrong.

I ran ldconfig, and then rebooted, to no avail

man clue is needed

then if it's all right s/uid=500/users

f_newton, http://www.bridgebuilder-game.com/

it worked when the drives were ext2

No, it did not.

f_newton, fun physics game

It worked when it was FAT

those two were never fat

oooh like nuclear weapons? they used to be fun physics games

The only reason UID exists is because FAT is too retarded to have permissions.

why would the linker complain that it can't find a library that is installed, and available?

only the DataDrive1 disk is fat

this is probably a very bad room for this, but what is a good distro for low-end machines?

Change uid=blah to defaults
mount

k

Room? Have we suddenly moved to AOL?

channel*
:P

You'll need to mount 'em as root, but they will automount at boot
If you prefer to mount/umount as user, make it defaults, user
Most likely no reason to do that
Unles it's an external drive or something

k

hmmm I've got the xine-lib-extras-nonfree package

Vilegent, xorg.setup.log
bug
Screen 0 is not DRI capable
??

no translator no try
cyber_cop, uname -r

zcat its a windows game?

f_newton; the other kernel allowed everything but S/PDIF output to work

I've also got the gstreamer-plugins-bad gstreamer-plugins-ugly but I don't know if they have anything to do with mplayer

really!

really
mr. 3 stages of amplification :P

f_newton, there's linux versions of some

well its true

either way, irrelevant and a big waste of time to talk about

f_newton, xscorch?

this is #Fedora not #talkdowntome

lol
well I have a cure for that

i *know* it's not the hardware

downhillgames, that was something that change wasnt it

I can't control my digital audio without mixing type stuffems

Vilegent; what?

downhillgames, nm

i installed PulseAudio a few days ago... nothing was problematic except NWN... which it itself is bugged, irrlevant... i came to my PC today and had no sound
nothing changed except apparently the kernel module

or the kernel itself

it's the same one as when i installed PulseAudio

fill a bugzilla on the new kernel
33?

mk
yeah

try -41

kernel-PAE-2.6.22.1-33.fc7
-41 isn't available yet and this can hold me over for now i guess
Vilegent; most my questions, actually, are not for this box specifically.
i pretty much leave this one alone unless some kinda workaround needs to be done/tried, like NWN
http://nwn.bioware.com/forums/viewtopic.html?topic=577473&forum=72&sp=0#5174528

http://redhat.download.fedoraproject.org/pub/fedora/linux/updates/testing/7/i386/

f_newton; thanks anyway unless you have further suggestions
i'm not installing a test kernel lol

try -41 koji its pretty darn good

hell I have been running it for 5 days or so

Ive been using it and its grrrreat

great? :P

fixes a lot of problems people have been having

better then sugar frosted flakes

-41 just showed up in updates testing.

EvilBob; i was nervous about -33... i shoulda waited everything worked perfect less the nvidia driver

lol yer running -33 yeah that could be the whole problem

so why not ask that to begin with?

I have been running the new F7 kernels as soon as they are born

zcat; Sweep the leg!
EvilBob; what about livna nvidia drivers?

is there any new kernel? 2.6.22.1-33 cannot move my clock.

downhillgames, put 'em in a bodybag, johnny. yeeeeaaah!

what about them?

zcat; AS he said it! hahahaha

they don't support my video card

EvilBob; one more thing i need working, one more reason not to run a testing kernle
kernel*

halp! fedora cannot move my clawk!

liberty____, fall back to the 22 kernel and file a bugzilla

http://redhat.download.fedoraproject.org/pub/fedora/linux/updates/testing/7/i386/

What kinds of things might be causing a Fedora KDE desktop to be unable to detect and automount removable media?

Anonycat; same problem in GNOME!

the -33 kernel

This is for someone else's computer, so I'm mainly just looking for ideas to give them

Anonycat; there you have it. it has to be the -33 kernel. i have the same thing and it's friggin annoying!

use the kernel from updates-testing

neg. go back to something supported
telling people to use a testing kernel is so unwise

it needs to be tested

something is wrong, when ever I try to file open on gimp and now presenter, the application freezes

EvilBob; by testers. not end-users.

and it FIXES the problem described

can anyone tell me a basic statement to generically scan a hard drive for bad sectors using badblocks?

EvilBob; and could possibly create more. and i'd like to note livna packages which depend on a kernel

I've asked for the uname -r output, but I wouldn't expect them to have updated and restarted since the newest kernel hit

madwifi, nvidia, ati, ndiswrapper, etc... all the kmod's

not a fedora issue

EvilBob; not a realistic help solution

Hey all!

looks like it's the -27 kernel, which is still 2.6.22
does the problem also exist there?

-27 works fine
afaik

piss off, the -41 kernel fixes the problem. the last two before did not

I don't mean to interrupt anyones convo but, is anyhere savvy with video card drivers?

nope

EvilBob; learn2compute

and why did they knock back the last number so much with 2.6.22, anyway?

davej posted about it
it is so the number in fedora shows closer what the "real deal" is
example http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/packageinfo?packageID=8

M`aR`k, what video card

It's a Radeon 9800.
I run Fedora Core 6. I just downloaded a .run file, a file extension Im not familiar with and I'm just wondering how I install it.

downhillgames, http://jasonfarrell.com/fedora/7/i686/

M`aR`k: http://fedorasolved.org/fglrx
or is it /ati
I forget

*checking out links now*

M`aR`k: Other than reading the instructions?

zcat; and? they are in the repos now...

It was /ati

M`aR`k: http://fedorasolved.org/ati

So?

zcat; oh i see. -41. sorry
zcat; i use kernel-PAE :x

wilson, are you addressing me?

downhillgames, oh well. playin' the odds, most are 32bit

Thanks for the helpful link!

M`aR`k: that is why we wrote it

zcat; eh. how long do you think it'll take to release -41 into the repos?

downhillgames, ask the people in #livna

hopefully months

i mean the actual kernel... do you mean that too, zcat?

that way we can make sure it is nice and stale for you
s/stale/stable

i sure hope so, EvilBob

but stale was a damn good miss

downhillgames, the more bugzillas filed on 33 the faster it gets pushed

Vilegent; http://bugzilla.redhat.com/ ?

yes

mk

especially if people try the testing kernel and report that it solves the problem
but downhillgames can't be bothered with that

whoops, wrong button

downhillgames, btw look thru you logs and see what esle got updated over the weekend

what problem is that?

Vilegent; sure.
EvilBob; you should try shutting up. Enjoy the silence

some audio issue

Hrmm.
I ran into a snag for this install.

USB auto mount issues
M`aR`k: read the "required" bits

well, the USB mounting issue cleared up for me with the autofs update.

Does an entry in fstab automount removable media every time they're inserted or only once and only if they're present on bootup?

They have an example of correct and incorrect, but my incorrect differs from the example they give...

medar; haha me too!
medar; i just updated that a couple mins ago

Anonycat, fstab entries... will mount at boot up

is there a way to run yum (search, install, etc.) while yum-updatesd is in the background? or do you have to stop the service first?

Anonycat, to do anything more sophisticated you need to use another service such as autofs or hal to deal with removable media

one at a time, it locks the databases

There's nothing wrong with the daemon running at the same time.
All that matters is whether it's actively DOING something.

Hey vr_mex

'lo

hey all ... when i run lsmod ... is the output showing me all LOADED modules ? or all available modules ?

pmcnabb; yum install yum-refresh-updatesd
well it's helpful anyway
i disabled puplet as soon as i installed... yeck

When ever I shutdown my computer it locks up at "syncing hardware clock to system clock" is there any reason why?

dimensionerror; what kernel? uname -r

2.6.22.1-27.fc7

hello nice to see you ;-)

how has your summer been?

Gee, it's probably doing what the man page says it's doing.

someone just said -27 and -33 have clock issues, dimensionerror

good so far..
using fc7
and centos5

good answer ... if i was reading that man page do you think that i would have needed you to say that ?

been here now and then have not seen you for a while

another problem then

yeah been busy

I have no idea why you think you shouldn't have to read the man page.

thanks

has nothing to do with thinking that i shouldnt have to ... but if i am using an IRC client on my phone without a browser how would i pull the man page up ?

er..

have to work out of the office for the next 6 days

hows life with you, things settled +-?

every other time i boot my computer it doesn't load the binary nvidia drivers like it should. instead, it seems to use whatever is standard (which just blacks my screen)

Life is an adventure

:-)

what would cause this?

hope things are opk

Wow... and without beating the details out of you, someone was supposed to guess that you were using some baroque method of connecting to IRC (not that the method is at all relevant).

yeah doing pretty good overall

nice to hear that :-)

anyone have f7 setup with swat and selinux cooperating? every howto I'm coming across says to disable selinux, which is lame, and I've ran into an exception while trying to make an selinux module based on the audit results.

Gods only know what your phone has to do with whether or not you can read a man page. Since you're not going to be running lsmod on the phone either, the communication medium is pretty much irrelevant.

got surgery, tumor out, now ok

burnin are you running setroubleshoot

that is good

vr_mex, dang glad your ok

Vilegent, hmm, don't think so.

burnin, try it

Vilegent, k, will do...

the method is completely relevant ... if i had the ability to pull up the man page i wouldnt have asked would i now? and why is anyone here if the answers can ALWAYS be found by researching a bit ? there should be only one person in here contantly .. a bot that just repeats, at nauseum, "what the man page and google says"

it will tell you how to fix the problems

thanks ;-)
question

answer

One last comment, and then I'm done... of course you would have asked.
bOne last comment, and then I'm done... of course you would have asked./b

if i have a centosDVD and centos is installed on the machine and i want to install some packages from the dvd not from the internet how do i do it?
EvilBob:

generalhan, cause we point you to the information and then that give you the independance to learn at your own rate, and we dont spoonfeed
vr_mex, sorry offtopic for this channel

I wanna be spoon fed

ok have to go to #centos..
;-)

vilegent this might be a veeeeeeeery noob question but

see you later guys :-)

sorry vr_mex

for some reason when I loaded the Fedora core 7 on a dvd and put it in the server (to install it) it wont load the installation

cool ... so even though i dont have access to the man pages ATM and you guys are completely content with spending 5 minutes telling me how to FIND the answer instead of taking 1 minute to select one of two options i gave !

np

I wanna be sedated...

me too !

I certainly am.

lol

it wasnt a question that needed to be answered ... it was a statement of fact
uit wasnt a question that needed to be answered ... it was a statement of fact/u

mwilson here's a thought.... what in the world for?
video irc could be kewl

hey guys

I could get a mask
)

Dunno. That was HIS claim, not mine. I recognized it for the self-serving laziness it actually was.

i didnt really want to take the time to explain to you how im using my phone, so i guess i could have said with "on my phone without a working browser" but would it really have mattered ?

I just connected a sony drx-83ou to fc6.

your smug remark would have been the same

it cant be really lazy if its self serving mwilson it has to be served by someone else

Is this the right place to ask about how to set up my Fedora Core 7 box to upgrade to the latest version of everything?

clahey, yum update

it is ... but you would probably find the answers you seek on google .... much faster than here !

it sees it fine. However, i'm using (or trying to use) X-CD Roast to burn the FC7 iso, and here's the error message I'm getting:execv error while calling /usr/bin/cdrecord.prodvd (No such file or directory)

johnfg, have you tried k3b

Yes, and? Did you provide a copy of ProDVD?

k3b works

mwilson, No, is that available through yum?

No.

Is that available, then, through SONY?
f_newton, I will give k3b a try.

lol Vilegent you suggest it and I get the credit.... now that rox
lol

f_newton, what else is new

lmao

if you're running gnome you should only need to right click on an ISO to burn it.

sdodson, I'll give that a try, too. Since I'm burning the iso on a dvdrw, I'll give both ways a try, then pick the quickest.
k3b didn't ask about the way I wanted the image burned, so it must have figured it out automagically, eh?

So you'll waste time burning it twice on the same disc with the same drive?

mwilson, Waste time? Maybe not. If it's good from k3b, I'll just stick with that, but how will I know if one program works a lot faster/simpler than the other?

How would it? All the GUI's are front-ends to one of two actually burn applications.

k3b is an all purpose graphical front end for cdrecord isnt it?
gnomebaker didnt work the few times I tried it in f7

K3B, being a KDE application, will probably slow you down with useless cr*p before actually getting around to burning the disc, but I'd be very much surprised if the actual burn time varied more than a percent or two no matter which front-end you used.

I went to prodvd, but they don't even have prices on their site. You have to email your interest.

Uh, since when?

From when? About 3 minutes ago.
I went to www.prodvd.net

Since when is cdrecord.ProDVD not a free download? Or did Schilling finally change the license as he was threatening to do?

Is there something else by that name?

k3b has always burned properly and fairly quickly while all other front ends Ive used tend to produce a high percentage of trash. I dont have an explanation for it but I do have a stack of bad cds and dvds to show for it
is there a decent application to play dvd movies in f7? Ive yet to find one that worked for me

dvd movies? DRM is a pain :P

yeah dvd movies i

if you decrypt them, VLC will play the .VOBs

so that means no
right?

correct. but that's a way to make it a yes

I don't begrudge anyone the right to use all the DRM they like.

well to me de crypt is where de relatives are put after dey die

mwilson, what if its drm encumbered drm

99.9 % of what has DRM on it isn't something I'd want even if I didn't have to pay for it in the first place.

I can just pop it in the player on top of the tv and watch it

f_newton; a DRM-enabled payer of sorts is what that is
player*

what is drm?

digital rights management

The idea that the actual owner of content has a say in what you can do with it.

i dont know of any DRM-enabled players for Linux, so you'll need to decrypt the DVDs to play them

f_newton, closed source BS

Vilegent; indeed

well vile when it comes down to the fact that they feed their fat spoiled brats with the money it makes Im sure you can understand why its that way

Uh, perhaps you've been living under a rock the last decade or so, but pretty much every OSS media player can decrypt a DVD.

why cant I then?

mwilson; DVD-RIP doesn't do it, etc. i need to run DVD Decrypter before anything will touch the VOBs
f_newton; the VOB's are DRM-enabled, you need to disable that to play it on a player which can't do this... make sense? :P (you need to decrypt it FOR the player)

the dvd player on top of my tv works great all i have to do is put the dvd in the little tray and push it in
the one in my computer works great from the windows partition but not in fedora

bugzilla is making firefox give 100% cpu usage lol

thats the bottom line
remember when redhat charged around a hundred dollars for distro releases in the retail market? I bought them

f_newton; yeah... because of DRM lol

I have no problems with buying fedora in the retail market either

i have problems buying Windows

but all I can get is the open source version that doesnt have all the features it could have if it were a retail product
I have no problems paying for what I want. I may not always have the money but hey....

they don't develop the whole OS.

the big thing about opensource and free this etc is not as big an issue as its made out to be
bthe big thing about opensource and free this etc is not as big an issue as its made out to be/b

if redhat wanted to, i'm sure they could develop another OS and charge for it... but they love OSS too
sdodson; he's waxing poetic :P

f_newton, i think you are wrong.. i think open documented standards as expressed in open code implementations are the biggest deal ever

if fedora for example, charged a nominal fee for its product then all sorts of things would be made to incorporate themselves in the os and progress would really be made against the windows monopoly.... I love the idea of community supported computer software but because of the economic facts of life it remains considerably behind

DVD decrpytion isn't available due to some technical hurdle.

f_newton, it may not matter to consumer media...but it absolutely matters for archival material..material society at large needs to care about 100 years from now

f_newton who is the company that distrubed your dvd

It's not included due to legal issues.

which one Vilegent ?

erm, that came out wrong.

right sdodson because the residual rights fee wasnt paid

The reason DVD decrpytion isn't included in Fedora is in no way related to a technical hurdle that financial resources would solve by increased developer time.

its not included

f_newton, drm on dvds, since its already broken is a non-issue in the long term... it simply does not matter

well for example mp3s, video codecs, proprietary drivers

the movies dvd
i have had good luck playing dvds with xine

f_newton, if strongly encrypted drm finds its way into cultural works like movies.... then it matters a lot

remember when mandrake issued a free opensource version and a retail version?

Why?

I'm running Fedora Core 2 on a old cPanel box that _BADLY_ needs an upgrade to the latest greatest.. Can anyone recommend a good guide that'd actually get me there?

best to download the latest

I am saying it really isnt a big deal to offer a version with commercial code in it for a retail sale as long as they still release a completely open source version and... the community might be able to better feed their kids
that is just my opinion

http://docs.fedoraproject.org/ install guide

mwilson, archival... if there is an encryption measure in place which needs several years to crack

I don't have access to the box, is my only problem.. I haven't tried to do an upgrade like this since Redhad 7.. Does that kind of upgrade actually work?

mwilson, then even if the patents expire... the crap will still be drm'd

the construction of fedora is a long painstaking process and the dedicated folks who do it deserve to be rewarded

a clean install is your best host option

every time

I guess I can't bring myself to be concerned about whether or not the average crap that passes as "entertainment" is recoverable in 100 years. You might as well try to legislate the continued existence of cassette tape manufacture. The result is the same.

It's quite elitest to decide what's worthy of keeping around.

mwilson, no not the average crap... the 2 or 3 things every year worth keeping

it is an individual choice though sdodson
thank God we still can make those choices

I'll be gone in a hundred years. It certainly doesn't matter to *me*.

preach it f_newton

mwilson, 200 years after we go paperless and leave nothing but machine readable code for all of our cultural works.... will history just stop?
mwilson, history as an area of research

I have no idea. As I said, it doesn't matter to me.

heh paperless .... thats how GW stole the white house

lol
i come back and look at what you're talking about
i got a neat pic of somethin'... hang on

mwilson, yeah... you're right..we shouldn't worry about any sort of long term impact that we could be making beyond our lifetime... screw this global warming crap.. im going to go compile gentoo on 20 computers right now to waste energy

has anyone had an experience of the installer crashing on boot up with a nvidia card?
has anyone had an experience of the installer crashing on boot up with a nvidia card?

try acpi=off

hmm

http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/7977/washingtondcpentagramcg3.jpg

if that doesnt work do a text install
linux text acpi=off

she says it doesnt even give her an opportunity to select which install

Hm? Worry about those things all YOU want. Just don't ask ME to. I made a conscious decision not to have children, and anyone else's children are their own problem.

i have a httpd service enabled. how do i allow and setup ftp connections

kontagious, install and config a ftp server

is there a yum package

yes

do you know the name
i forget how to use grep properly

why use grep

Gods only know what grep has to do with it.

use yum

lol

yum provides ftp

whats the command again, i cant seem to find it

kontagious must be a gentoo dropout

lol

yum install name of app

well time to go feed the hungry again.... have a good evening

no no i mean whats the name of it
how do i search again

yum search ftp

?

ftp package most commonly used by me is vsftpd. yum install vsftpd

another copy is running
lolol
ok its running
hmm

rpm -qa | grep ft
rpm -qa | grep ftp

i got it running

will tell you if it's already installed

ftp://74.101.160.233/
how do i setup accounts :P

vi /etc/vsftp/vsftpd.conf -- or something very close to that
conf file is VERY well documented

you need to create accounts in order to set aacounts

is there anyway to find what is causing certain lodules to load durring boot? i dont know if im wording this correctly ... lsmod shows modules loaded that i havent called on from an initscript or anything and id rather them not be loaded at boot
lodules = modules, sorry

modules shown in lsmod doesn't get loaded via initscripts

i know i can create an initscript to rmmod those modules ... but id just rather them not load at all

you can blacklist them if you don't want them to get loaded during boot

how so ?

rmmod

i know how to remove them once they are loaded ... but i dont want them to load at all

/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist is the file i guess

perfect ! thanks !

that has examples of doing blacklisting

thank you !
this is the oddest thing ... i dont understand what would have caused these modules to load
if i have hardware in this box will FC just try and load a corresponding module on its own ?

generalhan, what mods in particular
yes

it is some digium hardware i have, but i dont want this particular card working until i can single out what is causeing the errors

i added joel to the user_list and i try to login but i get this
4] 500 OOPS: cannot change

what is the exact error

4] 500 OOPS: child

Ok. Heres a quickie! Im trying to access a folder called Eve Online (it has spaces in it) from my cedega folder. I do cd Eve Online and it says I cant access that. Is it because of the spaces in the folder name?

kontagious, does joel have a /home?

All im trying to do is copy some fonts over to it.

M`aR`k: escape the spaces by a \

M`aR`k, so type Ev press tab

Ahh. Alright, i'll give it a try.

yes
it is /home/Joel

its not an error perse ... im just trying to get an application to run at boot, but i think the fact that it is loading modules for unused hardware that it is having issues

cd /home/ghost/.cedega/Eve\ Online/ ! got it!

bbiab need to reboot for updates

what module name to be exact ?

wctdm
im running and asterisk system on this FC7 box, but when i try to run asterisk at boot it never works. so i want to get rid of that module first since i dont use it and start troubleshooting from thre
alright !! blacklist worked perfectly !
no more wctdm !

ok the user exists and the home/Joel folder exists and the vsftpd service is running. why can i not log in?
what else do i have to configure

you seriously need to research on google about configuring a ftp server on fedora

hello all

hello

kontagious, try "man vsftpd.conf"

can i run fedora as server?
