mail server without gui
yes
there is openwebmail correct?
Note: Fedora is generally supported for ~13 months, so might might have to do a lot of upgrading.
has anyone here used no-ip's updater client?
what you mean by that, ricky
no idea about openwebmail but there surely is webmail (client app)
i mean server
You get security updates, etc. for 13 months, and that's it.
it's a software that use cgi
what happen after 13 month
if you suppose to run the server hosting for a greater period (than 13 months) try centos.
It's no longer supported.
EOL (end of life)
unless i pay? how much i pay?
wtf is attempted copyright infringement? does having a copy of decss on my linux box count?
sorry i've looked through the manual and read every comment
centos is free
even after i blacklisted that module i still am having issues. all i want to do is get asterisk to run at boot so im using the chkconfig method, maybe im doing it incorrectly (replace maybe with probably !): http://generalhan.pastebin.ca/640054
if i want to get support after 13 months
how much do i pay
student RHEL license is $60
the users should have access to their home dir by default right
There's no paying involved.
metbsd, it has got nothing to do with paying. It will just come out a new Fedora version and they will stop supporting the old Fedora after 13 months of life. Or try centos and you get longer free updates
kontagious, not with SElinux enabled
fedora is free. you need not pay for it
oh
thanks
kontagious, you can either use secontrol and change your policy or change SElinux to permissive
does celtos use EXACTLY same package as fedora?
the error message will give you the exact command
metbsd, no, it's a clone of RHEL but without any support
centos is much more stable than fedora so package versions are older than the current on in f7
You don't. Update packages simply won't be made anymore.
i'm actually looking for a os that can run openwebmail
debian removed it
Note: wfoster_hm used "support" in another sense, I was talking about getting package updates, etc.
where in the filesystem is the cache for pan
Whether it has a package or not, you can install/run it.
the newsreader?
dimensionerror, usually your home dir
dimensionerror; ~/.pan ?
wfoster_hm thanks it worked
np
metbsd, what do you mean by remove it? you can always download the source code, compile and install it
oh. hidden files
Hey guys
removed in package list
it's better to install such kind of software via source code.
manually
Had to grill some venison steaks and eat dinner with the fam.
metbsd, I would suggest using a program like "checkinstall" to ensure you have an easy way to upgrade / remove if the make files dont come with "make uninstall" options
Prefs menu if you like
btw...k3b worked flawlessly, the dvd's cool, so I'm gonna install fc7 tonight.
thanks!
Any special caveats concerning fc7?
johnfg, only if you have a ibm thinkpad T60
dimensionerror; np.
I'd read this before considering using openwebmail: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=301561
(They removed it for a reason)
and play on running x86_64
you will have a lot of updates to download and install after the installation if you want to. i probably guess around 700MB of updates (mostly dependent on your package selection)
Nope, I'm gonna install on an asus z9000.
wfoster_hm, lol! this sounds like personal experience!
johnfg, you are probably good then, I run it on most of my machines
GionnyBoss, you betcha
Cool. How do you like it compared to fc6?
I mean, for the ibm thinkpad T60
GionnyBoss, wasn't a big deal, just imo it was better to go with the ipw3945d module and remove iwlwifi/iwl3945
a few minor issues with suspend but it's all fixed and working fine now with a tad bit of work
this is only on x86_64
32 is probably fine
operation mindcrime
lol
Queenscryche is a good band
hi all
Hello, anyone here used freenx before?
I wonder what means this message and If it's possible to make anything. http://rafb.net/p/NkTsph82.html
I installed freenx on my fedora core 5
But I cannot connect to it
Fedora Core 5 is DEAD, EOL, Not Supported, not updated, you need to upgrade
my vps provider said core 5 was teh latest
the lied to you
phpusmo, he was going 88mph in the wrong direction
lol.
Is there a way I can make grub boot a new kernel once and then if the system doesn't come up, reset and and fail back onto another with out physically being there? (not being on front of a box is really annoying...)
mitti, you can't make it automatically reboot (out of grub's control), but you can make it fallback after booting a saved entry once.
http://fedorasolved.org/installation-solutions/installing-fedora-using-pxe-images
yeah, that's what I want. I've done that with before with lilo but not grub..
thanks man
back
could someone help me setup freenx?
just install it. that's about all the setup it needs
Mathman, I did
whats the website that has instructions on how to build the ipw3945 wireless drivers?
but when I installed the client on my windows computer
it wouldn't connect
sure, you need to import the key from /usr/NX/share/key or something
what's the latest version of grub in FC6?
I'm thinking my FC2 grub is different... saved default options don't seem to be sticking..
my form grub docs, in 0.97 at least, /boot/grub/default is supposed to be written I think..
s/my form/from my/
Mathman, I did
so what's it say exactly? you sure you have the right key? ssl is enabled?
there is no option to enable ssl..there's only an option to disable it
!pastebin
lol. so leave it enabled.
yeah..I unchecked the disable box
you sure it says disable and not enable?
anyhow, which key did you go with? can you ssh to the machine?
yup
what key?
I don't know how to ssh to the machine, what do you mean by that?
the one you say you imported. that key. grab putty and try and ssh to the thing.
Mathman, here's the details when I try to connect
http://rafb.net/p/ml9iZy70.html
hmm, install which I spose. yum install which
I have putty..that's how I installed freenx
so ssh works.
rpm -q which
type that into putty?
If you're ssh'ed in, sure.
ivazquez I've installed the rmp..I usesd this guide
http://fedoranews.org/contributors/rick_stout/freenx/
say what? what are you on? fedora 1?
fedora core 5
yum install freenx would do the trick these days
that's what I did
So did you run that command yet?
rpm -q which?
what do I change "which" too?
You don't change it.
package which is not installed
look at this http://fedoranews.org/contributors/rick_stout/freenx/
The first thing you're going to do is log a bug against freenx stating that it needs which as a dep.
How do I do that..sorta new
/topic
Anyone remember FC2? "echo 'savedefault --default=2 --once' | grub --batch" doesn't seem to work with this version of grub..
No, no one remembers FC2.
grub docs talk about grub-set-default which doesn't seem to exist in FC2..
hello?
Look at the topic.
yeah... FC2 is getting old, it sucks.. but if I can't upgrade safely I'm stuck for now..
getting old?
But log it against F7, with the package NVR of freenx-0.6.0-12.fc7 .
yeah.. it's been rooted twice in the past week.. I'm trying to get it as up to date as I can to get buy until I get a new box up and running to make it a smooth transition..
ivazquez, I'm not on the actual vps..I'm just connected to it through putty
is there an rpm package for the intel 3945 wireless cards other than the one from atrpms?
is there a 64 bit version for xmms?
That's fine. Log the bug, then we'll go on to the next step.
lol is there one at atrpms?
ivazquez, the ipw2200 is included in f7 right?
lol how do I log it?
and what bug?
Look at the channel topic. Log the fact that freenx needs to require the which package.
dunno if there's really a point if we're talking foriegn rpms for fc5 and all
They're not foreign.
And the problem exists in F7 as well.
thought he said he followed the rick stout thingy?
You didn't read it closely enough.
alrighty
I'm looking at the topic...I don't understand what I have to do
"Bugs go to..."
heh.
well, looks like miller time on my end. have fun gents
Later.
Yes, I'm on that site
how do I know the bug#?
First query for freenx bugs to see that it doesn't already exist.
k
Leave the version field blank.
found a couple
Any of them talk about missing dependencies?
nope
Okay, you'll need to open a new bug then.
mine isn't missing dependencies though is it?
The freenx package needs to require the which package.
That's what the error on line 9 means.
oh
Maybe my client is newer then the server on my vps?
That's not it.
ok
ivazquez, is there an alternate software I can use for remote desktop?
Everything else is inferior.
VNC?
you can try tightvnc is it's vnc that you want
s/is/if
You don't want VNC.
never mind ivazquez I looked it up myself.
Sorry, got a bit distracted :P
oh thats ok... i need to start looking things up for myself anyway.... I mean after 10yrs or so ya know?
sigh
is there anyone here that can help me with the bug?
Have you logged it yet?
you mean submitted it?
Yes.
Not yet, I have to make an account.
if it means a deposit the bank of newton is now open
bif it means a deposit the bank of newton is now open /b
I got another problem
Go ahead.
I installed source dedicated server through putty..I started it up and runs fine with most of my maps
but when I try a different one..it never works on it
Majic_Irssi is an amsg whore!
I added -debug in the command line but I don't know where it generates the log file
This is the wrong channel for getting support on that.
does anyone know what package has the manpages for core C functions?
man-pages
thanks
does anybody know anything about TCP retransmission issues with 2.6.22.1-27.fc7 ? take a look at this video of an SSH session onto another machine.... first natively from fedora 7, then under vmware from XP: http://pic7.piczo.com/dcamzo/?g=38497150&cr=7
natively from fedora 7 is consistently 10 times slower!!!!!!
the procedure in the video in both cases is to do "ls -al /usr/tmp" to generate a bunch of output
you can see how the network behaviour on fedora 7 seems to bring the data in slowly in chunks and there is no such behaviour in windows
here are some snoops using wireshark (used to be ethereal) of fedora and windows in the same situation:
http://www.aaa.net.au/campbell/linux_snoop.png
http://www.aaa.net.au/campbell/windows_snoop.png
the linux host snoop is full of retransmissions, but the windows is not
but its on the same machine, same hardware, same network interface
any ideas anyone?
What about on the other kernels?
meh. has anyone by any chance used powerware lansafe on fedora? i cannot figure out why i cannot connect with my vista machine to the controller that is installed on fedora. lsof -i shows that the program has open sockets or something at port 3068.
ivaquez, same on 2.6.21-1.3228.fc7
What about on the other kernels?
which other ones?
-33, -41, etc...
whats the other machine there?
the other machine is a solaris 9 box, and I don't believe the issue is anything to do with it.. running "time ls -al" on that box consistently reports a fraction of a second on the remote box
but fedora takes about 10 seconds to get the result back, while windows under fedora in vmware takes less than one second
consistently
and as per the png's above, when natively from fedora, lots of TCP retransmissions
I have a dv9005us laptop from hp. When fedora boots up, the bootup-loading screen shows up in full resolution without any trouble. When it finishes and (loads gnome?.... goes to the user login) it displays only a black screen. Using the binary driver fixes this. is there any way around using
the binary driver?
what is your video chipset dimensionerror ?
have you tried booting in to init 3 and typing system-config-display --reconfig ?
nvidia 6150 go
heh
anything between those two hosts? firewall/router? possibly a mtu mismatch thats handled by vmware in the other case?
also, using acpi=off fixes this, but breaks the sound. ????
http://www.snailbook.com/faq/mtu-mismatch.auto.html
hmmmm dimensionerror what kernel are you booting into?
I have a dv6205us dimensionerror and mine works perfectly
2.6.22.1-27.fc7
but I have the intel video set
doing this doesn't change the situation:
[root@Vigor12 ~]# ifconfig eth0 mtu 576
maybe someone will give you the url for the -41 koji kernel and you can try that one. apparently the -27 and -33 kernels have serious problems
the -41 kernel is at: http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/buildinfo?buildID=12174
i know that i had this problem before installing the binary drivers, and i think my kernel was updated when i install them
i want to install java on a x86_64 machine, but i also want teh firefox java plugins , what can i do ?
also dimensionerror once you get it up and running you can add the livna repo and see if there isnt a livna nvidia driver for your video
the i386 java web hosting provides those plugins
i used kmod-nvidia
from livna
i guess i could install just the i386 java
is there an easy way to change my kernel
hang on a sec
nirik, that MTU page didn't seem to help
ah well, it was a thought...
Does the Fedora 7 live cd include system-config-lvm?
-41 is in the testing updates repo.
what do you suggest then?
http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/packageinfo?packageID=8 go there and download the -41.fc7 kernel rpm dimensionerror
what's a good place to get free shell accounts that I can test with?
You don't need to download it. You can install it with yum.
that's probably OT
ok
here goes
not sure what else it could be... Is it only ssh? or any tcp connection?
yum install yum install kernel-2.6.22.1-41.fc7.i686
nothing to do
"nothing to do?" A: When yum reports "nothing to do" what it's really saying is that the "package may already be installed" (or it doesn't exist), so there's nothing for it to do. (ask directly: rpm -q package).
You have to enable the updates-testing repo.
dimensionerror, it exists in updates-testing
Anyone have an idea how to backup a 1.2TB /var/log/lastlog (sparse) ???
dimensionerror, scroll up and go to the url I gave you
cpio gives up
double click on the -41.fc7 kernel, download it then open it
does anyone know where I can get the atmel-firmware in an rpm for my kernel version?
while i wait
yum list|grep "kernel"
tells me that i have
kernel.i686 2.6.22.1-27.fc7 installed
kernel.i686 2.6.21-1.3194.fc7 installed
those are the two with problems?
dimensionerror, look are you unable to read what we've been telling you?
yum --enablerepo=updates-testing install kernel
that will work
do what kdekorte says
i've downloaded and run the rpm
it's busy downloading things
are you doing a 'yum localinstall kernel*rpm' then?
i downloaded the rpm from the site that you gave before
and double clicked it
what's the minimum intel cpu for 686 binaries?
"software installed successfully" ... no reboot?
yes reboot into that new kernel
i'll be back
p4
thanks
yw
i think the driver for my pcmcia wifi is located at /lib/modules/2.6.21-1.3194.fc7/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/atmel_cs.ko what do I need to edit to get this recognized?
I'm having problems on the latest kernel with my Realtek 8139 eth0. 'NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0 timeout'. I've noticed in Bugzilla that this was a problem on earlier (2.6.14 or so) kernels, wondering if others are seeing it at the moment?
(although, truth be told, if someone's seeing it they're probably not on IRC as their network doesn't work ;-)
bleeter, what kernel are you using?
the one pushed through updates for F7 on the 27th of this month (I'm on Win32 at the moment, can't precisely answer, I apologise)
bit2man, use a util than can handle sparse files, or exclude it
http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/packageinfo?packageID=8 go there and download the -41.fc7 kernel rpm
what utils would you suggest?? I'm trying "tar -S" but it's reading through all 1.2TB
bleeter reboot in to the original installation kernel go online and follow the above link
bit2man, *shrug* -- http://kbase.redhat.com/faq/FAQ_44_6150.shtm
rightio, thanks for that. I mailed the chap who did the FC6 netdev kernels, asking if there was anything he'd done for F7. I'll give the above a go. I appreciate your thoughts
*he's done, ie netdev kernels for F&
Most F7 kernels already have the netdev patches.
that kernel is in updates-testing now
yeah - great advice (nooot) .... I'm beginning to doubt the point in sparse files
In fact, he's the one that built -41.
In this case, exclusion might be the best solution.
bit2man, i'm not. vmware'd be useless without 'em.
https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-test-list/2007-July/msg00684.html
heya mate, long time no see yeah, I kinda figured that, was scratching my head this morn trying to work out how to proceed, clutching at straws
sdodson yeah thats what they say but I kind of worry about leaving testing repos active in noobs yum configs
usdodson yeah thats what they say but I kind of worry about leaving testing repos active in noobs yum configs/u
yum upgrade --enablerepo=updates-testing kernel
useless huh?
bit2man, used-less
lol - good save
i thought it would be safer just to give them the kernel n not the whole updates-testing repo but it is true that y'all know best
I'll figure something out tomorrow.
nighty night.
i want to install java on a x86_64 machine, but i also want the firefox java plugins , what can i do ? only the i386 java provides the plugins
or is there a jre i386 i can install just for the plugins
I have a network interface issue, using yum is a no go for me
and than i can install x86_64 jdk
but, I do appreciate the info re: it's in testing now
well you can download the rpm from koji and then install it in fedora yes?
yup, doing that right now
hope that works
the only other thought that ocurred to me is a bit disjoint. The box is a dual-boot, and 'coz I spend so little time in Win32, I don't *really* pay attention when applying updates. There was a recent Win32 update for the 8139 I've got - it's possible, maybe but unlikely imo, that may have
some cause/effect. suck it and see, I guess
nah...
A free approach to getting XP running under VMware player if you must is to build a VM image with the free MS virtual PC software, then convert it to VMware with the free VMware converter, then stick it on linux, install VMware player with this patch (http://knihovny.cvut.cz/ftp/pub/vmware/vmware-any-any-update112.tar.gz) which makes it work on recent kernels.
i would have used virt-manager backed by kvm
I know I can probab;y search somewhere for this, but what do I need installed to use an ATI video card?
there are packages on ATI's site
it's a binary installer
Is that all I need then, or is there something on yum I can get?
rpm.livna.org
yum
do not follow Lego_Maniac's advice if you don't want a hassle
configure livna .. install kmod-fglrx
Are the ATI drivers OSS, I didn't think they would be but the card works on the Fedora Live?
no they aren't
Ayone know grub? how to find if stage 1_5 is embedded on a drive?
it uses the radeon open source driver
http://fedorasolved.org/video-solutions/ati-yum-livna/
do I just install the "Fedora 7 repository RPMQ from that site to have it work, and then yum the kmod?
thanks
install livna rpm .. yum install kmod-fglrx
follow the howto
Thanks a ton
I'll be back soon, hopefully with good news, thanks again
are any of the movie players gnome VFS aware?
well, totem should
(or whatever you call the magically places-connect to server thing)
hrm. well i am using totem-xine
totem-xine is totem
oh
well i figured i just didn't know what the difference is
gstreamer vs xine-lib
hrm
totem tells me could not play 'smb://location' there is no input plugin to handle the location of this movie
ha, maybe it's hanlded by gstreamer in the end..
gnome-python2-totem maybe?
hrm
BarnacleBob, thats what totem does....
gnome-python2-totem wont help, no.
that would be a bummer. i'm not sure why i went with xine. i do know it was suggested somewhere to be able to play move codec
totem is sucky and useless
totem-xine works once you remove gstreamer and totem-plparser
f_newton, well do any of the other ones support the vfs?
xine and the xine non-free extras
f_newton, yeah i don't have those installed. so xine works fine, just not over the magic mountless system
totem-xine as well
i doubt that xine will support gnome-vfs..
well anvil is a lot more knowledgable then I
heh well does regular totem actually play the more common codecs?
Ive not found anything that totem does except suck
you have to install codec packages.
both totem and xine play my DVDs but neither of them play audio CDs on my system - totem plays a couple of second and then stops, sometimes restarting for a few seconds, and then stops. xine just hangs
heh
well, it plays dvds fine, it's easy to use, the GUI is not crappy as mplayer's or xine's..
Anvil, hrm i'm not sure why the site said xine. i'm going to try to uninstall it all and go with the regular now that i have the codec packages
and it does thumbnailing in nautilus too
anvil Ive never gotten totem to do anything except tell me it cant play squat cuz it aint supported
man, that goes for every players
not for xine or mplayer
if you dont install the codecs it wont play anything
totem does kind of suck
ho, so try to remove your /usr/lib/win32 directory and see if it still plays all of your media files
I've got two 4th row seats for Carlos Mencia Aug 17 at the Colusa Casino $215
the standard xine-lib package from fedora doesnt support much either
I'm stoked
you have to install additionnal codec package like xine-lib-extras-nonfree
even that is pretty limited
so please, just stop trolling on that point you're gonna lose in the end.
Anyone know how to resize ext3 on a live system???
use gparted
I'm gonna try to make him poke fun at me
ext3 supports on the fly resizing - growing, not shrinking though
What release did RH introduce udev in?
so Anvil i've got totem now (sans xine) and it works to play over vfs but it says i don't have divx codec installed. which i clearly do in /usr/local/lib/win32/ any ideas? does gstreamer look in a different place for codecs?
rpm.livna.org have codec packages. -_-
and divX is handled by Xvid afaik, not by some dummy proprietary file.
hrm i looked in linva. guess i didn't get the name right. let me try again
BarnacleBob; yum install gstreamer-plugins-ugly gstreamer-plugins-bad xvid whatever other stuff you need
downhillgames, i have all those installed (unless i need xvidcap)
do you? read the description.
well vlc dosn't work with gnomes vfs. which is the point of me screwing with it
downhillgames, yeah i verified i have all those installed
:o i don't see why it wouldn't work
streaming video/audio over Samba?
yeah
works fine if i mount it. i just want to use the gnome vfs stuff as its more convenient
bworks fine if i mount it. i just want to use the gnome vfs stuff as its more convenient/b
VLC is made to stream over the LAN
whoa
i have a hard time believing it can't
this one worked
must just be that specific one
going AFK...
heh
ok i know what fixed it
gstreamer-ffmpeg
so yay
thanks guy who is no longer here and Anvil
hello guys
hello
my gnome/ kde / gui is not loading
i only have command line
what do i type to open it ?
i dont know what i did wrong
'
RSAMan, startx (assuming that a GUI is installed)
thanks
not sure why it does not spawn on startup
RSAMan, what init level are you at?
init level '/
?
sorry i am a bit neww
just installed fedora
RSAMan, umm
i have forgotten how to check
sorry
RSAMan, you made the right choice
thanks
jimblah, do you remember how to check what runlevel one is at?
yup, well, after booting into the older kernel, and having network... managed to install the updates-testing kernel, booted into that, was fine. for kicks, booted back to the kernel I was having trouble with... and it's working. If it fails on me, or similar, at least I have that later kernel
now to try out. Thanks again for your assistance, and sdodson's as well
not right off hand, to change runlevels i think you use init or telinit #
the run levels are documented if you need to know what happens at each runlevel
runlevel 6 is shutdown termination stuff
I'll look it up
jimblah, thanks
http://www.fedorafaq.org/basics/
http://www.fedorafaq.org/basics/#runlevel
it's all there
Did I say I was going to see carlos mencia?
jimblah, nah, i hear he's hated by other comics
I think he's great. I hope I can get him to make fun of me
damn stupid kernels
the last two kernsl for F7 are garbage for me
I'm going to yell I'm part indian but I'm undocumented. I can't start my own casino
I'm in the 4th row. Maybe he'll hear me
Does anyone know revisor source well? I need to locate a block of code so I can fix it...
I'm new to python, glade, and revisor so its like looking for a needle
I need daMaestro
hello again
i want my linux to operate as a dhcp server host as well
could u point me in the right direction
or where i should look
hola
How do I use iptables? Each time I type that I get command not found
"command not found?" A: Run the command AS ROOT after switching users with "su --login" or "su -" in order to get root's command PATH so the command WILL be found; don't run "su" by itself. If it's still not found, then either it's not installed in a standard path location (echo $PATH), is not
executable (chmod a+x), is in your current dir (./runme), or you've spelled it incorrectly.
su - will allow you to use it
joneal, did zcat's response explain it to you?
anyone from Finland?
I'd do what zcat says, it could get nasty otherwise
agreed
as root?
su - will give you rott access
root
Ya I tried as root
IM using zsh
hmm
you tried `su -`?
zsh owns
it should still work
davascript_home, what's special about it?
oh it works
su - did it
if you configure it correctly you can run cd /u/sr/l and it will take you to /usr/sr/linux
well /usr/src/linux
there are alot of differneces
its not utf-8 compliant though
somewhat but you see ksh coming out in it
ok now Im trying to use ipchains
the completion is nice and it corrrects commands like fdsik to fdisk
use tables chains is old
Hi
I've just installed fedora 7 and I encounter the ldap bug. Is there a fix ? I don't find solutions in the forums...
are you sure its abug
villek, bronx, muep, mord, paavon, [Max], Juhaz, pcfe, homeboy-, dnsn? Anyone coming to Assembly in Helsinki on Thursday?
e
nope
Maybe the default behaviour of the ldap auth has changed, but all the previous versions of fedora were working out of the box. A message on a board mentioned that the search filter of ldapsearch was changed..
have you checke dthe behavior of the version you were using vs the new vesion
no not yet, I tought it was a known bug.
i was just making usre
Morning everbody
Agolaura, morning
good evening in your morning
CaneToad, good day
Hey Cane & Pembo
Well anyway i have Fedora 7 ISO now and there is 2 ISOs in the folder i downloaded
1 is the rescue i believe
Agolaura, what are the file names? most like the rescue and the dvd
1 is the main OS and 1 is called F7-I386-recscruecd
rescuecd
yeah thats right
do i need the rescue CD?
ISO*
Agolaura, well it does exactly what the name implies, and it's small.. so up to you
so it repairs it when its corrupt im guessing, is that right? im kinda new to linux
hey there Agolaura! how did your install go last night?
Hi frozty, i havent done it yet ive just woke up and its finished DL
Agolaura, well it helps you repair it ... think of it as a sonic screwdriver
Im just about to burn
thanks pembo so ill burn both the ISO them
then*
Agolaura, just to be clear, you'll need a DVD-R for one, and a CD-R for the other
sonic screwdriver?
you dont need the rescue ntill you can tboot
frozty_sa, i've been watching doctor who
What's the latest kernel ?
oooooh.....I was wondering
davascript_home, not always the time when wants to be burning a cd though
frozty_sa, know the show?
chewed-on: 2.6.22.1-33.fc7
. . .
mines 2.6.22.1-27.fc7
oh right [:
i only have have DVD-RW and DVD+RW,is that ok?
yeah I haven't updated in a few weeks.
yes, that can be OK
ok great
yes Agolaura
i still havent made a partition
you can write the rescue disc to a DVD-RW, just don't lock it
guys, hang on....maybe it'd be easier for her to blank the HD and do partitioning from scratch?
unless you want to take a go at modifying the current partitions?
im going to write the rescue to a cd-r its only 100mb
Agolaura, you're a her?
Thanks.
yeah pembo i am :p
frozty_sa, why play with partions at all? did i miss something
she has a vista on and no partitions
Agolaura, cool... might want to check our your window, see if frozty_sa is looking in at you
she wants to dual-boot
lol
frozty_sa, use partion magin, in windows, or similar to leave empty space on the drive
yeah i have to make a seperate 20GB for fedora
it's the simplest way - then just tell fedora to use the empty space
Well everyone said it will overwrite windows if i dont make a partition
true. but I try not to advocate getting illegal software for such a use (well, on the record at least ;-)
frozty_sa, fair enough
when F7 installed, bluetooth was broken and I had to hack /etc/sysconfig/hidd to have 'HIDDARGS="-i hci0 --server"' instead of just 'HIDDARGS="--server"' ... must be a problem with the installer, so when reporting a bug, what component do I report it against?
Agolaura, you may want to check in the administration tools of Vista, see if it can resize the partion for you
i dont have vista
i have windows XP
dont use vista to partition use pated or partition magic
Agolaura, oh.. who mentioned vista
mayeb qparted from the livecd
let me see if i XP can do it
GParted kept on failing so im gonna try a different one
dont use windows to repatition
XP can't
frozty_sa, thanks for saving me the trouble
use a livecd with qparted
XP cannot resize partitions, even less those that it itself uses, and when it does create them it blows them
well go ahead guys... i've never needed to do what Agolaura needs without partion magic
im gonna use partition logix
logic
ehh use a specific partitioner to move that data correctly
move windows the the latter of the drive
and the first 20gb for linux
hopefully partioning in Anaconda is simplied one day
im not a real pro on making partitions
tighter part of the drive
noooooo......
how to update using rpm ?
why not
I mean which command-line arguments should I use ?
windows sometimes makes funny with the mbr and stuff
i run fedora on the first 10 and windows ont the latter 39
ok so install grub to thembr and it will work
hmmm....k. Then you must be luckier than I ;-)
maybe use grub map functiion
heya
just a short question, is Fedora 5 still maintained ?
but hang on....wouldn't it take a long time to that windoze partition?
no
thanks !
Fedora is a popular distro i take it, by the ammount of members in here you have
well the reason windows makes funny with thembr is when installed it overwrites the mbr
as of about 1~2 months ago
adrianS, no
grub can control windows very easily
k, I had something in mind, but was not sure
have a nice day
adrianS, what does the open suse build service do?
about dr who, I know of it, but haven't seen it. want to sometime
yes it can be time consuming
building packages from one source for all kind of distros
but worth it
adrianS, i see
including Fedora 5, 6 and 7
so my suggestion would be, defrag, partition at end?
adrianS, well we're getting ready for F8
if you want to build form source use gentoo
jsut so you know
look next week on software.opensuse.org, there will be a nice interface where you can also search for fedora only packages ...
then it would save her the time...more time to play with fedora
When is F8 out?
adrianS, cool
is your hard drive defragmented?
no sure Agolaura
yeah i did it last night
eh specs and preference
you can install fedora ont he latter part but it will be slower
and if your swap isnt on asep part then it will be real slow
hello everyone, what is the shell script to determine current user is root?
im just gonna make a partition and then install
whoami
why slower? because further into drive?
yes
especially swap sholuld be on the first sectos of the drive
aaaahh.....but I don't think it will make such a difference for Agolaura, as she is planning to only play for now
true
yeah im just testing it out
diehard
1-2-3 or 4
ha umm junkie
also, thanks. next time that I actually need to dual-boot (which might be when I get my new pc), I'll try it the way you suggest davascript_home
use two disks for a dual boot and then talk to me it works even better
previous pc I had three :-p
you mean two HD?
three disks, I mean...
yep
i only got 1 in this comp
i have some spares though
well manging multiple disks can be daunting but you can utilize early sector space better
how big are those spares?
it can get comlicated if your playing and learnign do that first
1 is 200 and 1 is 150
myne is 150 in this pc
hmmmm......
ok davascript
73gb scsi+18gb scsi+200gb id
hang on...
what about setting up a dual-drive dual-boot? installing grub to secondary hd, but grub record to primary HD?
it saves on the partitioning....
well you only need to install grub to the 2nd hdd and then map (hd0) ( hd1) map (hd1) (hd0)
in grub.conf
()_()
well in you windows config
and then set the BIOS to load from hd1 as primary boot?
Fedora just finished burning
we're just quickly tinkering...it might be possible to not partition ;-). want to use any of those other drives?
her is my grub.conf for you http://rafb.net/p/Ss5aKK69.html
Well they are in my other PC atm, i could attempt the partition again and if it fails then try your method?
no frozty_sa
windows mbr tries to bully you have to trick it to load grub
oooooh.....then rather not initially. do the partition
OK
brb
hb
thats my gentoo grub i use fedora to learn for m RHCE yet i normally use gentoo
dont copy it
i wont
fedora grub is different and you should use it as an examle
ill brb ok, just gonna attempt a repartition again
ok
guys
how could I check my motherboard model on fedora ?
lspci can help
dmidecode sometimes as well
but I need exact motherboard model
or open your case and look for themodel #
the bios is a beter place
does fedora save the packages that get installed via yum?
if so where
how do you mean?
Well, on my gentoo boxes, all the packages installed via emerge get downloaded to /usr/portage/distfiles so there is no need to download them again if you need them, does this happen with yum
check /var/lib for a yum dir
/var/cache/yum
I'm not sure. I have been in a similar situation where I need to install the same stuff on more than one pc, and setting up a local mirror to mirror all packages is not an option....I have considered writing a new plugin for yum to bypass this problem...
use distcc
well thats for compiling
/join #shorewall
you mihgtbe abel tosetup a local repository via a samba share
olr nfs
cnat tpye
lol
we see
alcohol qorks better than windows
*with you mean?
nah i dont use it
wel work forces me to but xshell makes me happy
hello
does F7 have Wine rpms?
yum list | grep wine
thanks
i tried yum install wine*
but got only wine-docs
error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH
probably because i'm forcing yum to install 64bit packages
what's an acceptable C compile host for hybrid-ircd on fedora?
find a package instead of trying to compile.
thus wine is not listed
try su -c ym install wine
well partition logic said no hardrive registered
it's hybrid-ircd, they only do .tar.gz files.
C compiler = gcc
or they have SVN's, not used them before though.
gcc is a C compiler?
gcc isa compiler suite
well, I know mplayer will complain if you try to configure it to compile with gcc-4.x.x -- you have to give it a gcc-3 compiler -- maybe hybrid-ircd is the same?
GNU Compiler Collection
mplayer wont compilefor me under gentoo its the new version of mplayer
no, mplayer wont.
compile the older one it works
Anyone know why partiotion logic says "no hardrives regigistered"
registered*
if you're running into an error in h264.c -- there's a workaround
use a diff app
i dunno i havent looke dinto it as it does not affect me
it might be drive types
ok ill try a cracked version of partition magic
i have SATA
thats why
why
Agolaura, because you need to reverse the polarity of /dev/null
it doesnt have drivers
so i can repartition
use a livecd and qparted or gparted
gparted doesant work for me ether
im going to try partition magic
part magic works well
I'm running into a problem trying to update firefox to 2.0.0.5. I get a dependency error that gecko-libs 1.8.1.4 can't be found (and these are required by yelp)
so install tose libs
''Error: Missing Dependency: kernel-x86_64 = 2.6.22.1-33.fc7 is needed by package kmod-nvidia'' -- but I don't seem to be able to find a new kernel.x86_64 -- any clues, before I build the danged thing from the source rpm?
check your symlin to usr/src/linux
ls -l usr.src
ls -l /usr/src
sorry
if that was meant for me, I fear that visiting that symlink may be a red herring...
nah if its not pointed at the source that uname -a yields then rm the link and relink it
no gecko-libs package in existence in yum
ln -s source link
brb need some coffee
2.6.22.1-33.fc7 kernel for x86_64 = being worked on, anyone know its status? I can start checking mirrors by hand, I guess...
just dont use that kenrel
then I can't update kmod-nvidia
ehh dont update that either
well i might be wrong i am using gentoo monolithic kernel use
i am going to bed g'night all
drunk
that might work, except then I have to tell "yum update" to exclude those packages -- whereas, it would be nice if the kernel was available, so I could fully utilize the snazzy goodness of yum.
wel thats a flaw of yum in my ook
/etc/portage/package.use
mmm gentoo
sorry had too
adios
buhbye
Do someone else have slow logins on fedora 7 with LDAP or is it just me ? It takes 30sec for a ldap login, on a fresh default box.
redhat machines and fedora 6 are working with default settings and the login is normal
hey all can some one help me.. i have a fc7 box that i would like to do the following, when i push the powerbutton it does the poweroff command.. is this possible?
hey all can some one help me.. i have a fc7 box that i would like to do the following, when i push the powerbutton it does the poweroff command.. is this possible?
Steffan[A], turn ott that crappy public away, noone cares\
]ah
is there some network configuration problems ? (30s delays usually indicates a failure to contact a dns)
no, everything else is ok, web irc, i can ping the ldap server with it's dns name. I see many many request using wireshark when I try to login (as someone suggested in a forum)
i have partition magic
With F7 do I have to use atrpms to get ffmpeg?
anyone walk me through please?
"have to" no.
So where can I get stuff like ffmpeg?
I think livna has it
speaking under correction, though
ah! /me had thought F7 merged livna and extras and core and all that jazz
no, it merged core and extras
livna is a third-party repo
thanks
if rpm.livna.org could be hosted in fedora, there would never have been a rpm.livna.org repository.
Hey frozty could you help me with partition magic please
i have it installed now
yup
gimme a moment to boot my vm
thanks, 1 says loacal disc c 150 and 1 says unalocated 7.8
ok
yes, that 7.8 megs unallocated is true
so how do i make an extra 20?
without touching windows
I'll step you through it now, hang on
oh ok
thanks
my vmware modules quickly need to get re-compiled
ok no rush im just impatient lol dont mind me
it does look allot easyer compared to the lives
i can see why people pay for it
yuo
yup*
but we're getting there...
i dont see how i can do it without touching windows because its all in 1 150gb chunk
formatted in NTFS
hang on, I'm gonna have to fly blind here (modules being a pest)
right-click on the parttion
oh ok
partition*
yeah
want me to send you screenys?
nah, 's fine
ok
look for resize
resize/move?
yup
yeah
open that
opened
and now just drag the right-hand arrow
till you've got 20gigs open
it will only let me go to 48,030.2
hey i am using fedora 6 until fedora 7 and ati play nice again and trying to get kitchensync to install but installing kdepim doesnt install kitchensync even though the rpm says it provides it :O i am in gnome though so maybe this is something stupid witht that
hang on...
ok
don't look at the free space that it gives
free space after?
look at after the arrow size
ie, {[ your hd partition here ]-----------}
you want the ----------'s to be about 20gigs
so then i hit apply?
yup
lemme backup lol
i dont trust the programs
partition magic you can trust
just as long as the power doesn't go
if anyone can help Agolaura when she comes back please, I have to go
Thanks frozty that worked perfect
no backing up ether
is PyQt-4 in any repositories?
how easy is that
is that question for me?
Well... anyone?
i have no clue
is there anything else i have to do to the 20gb unallocated space or do i just install fedora staright on it?
straight*
69m357y2tbfr0i0TPqDy4g==
I am using "system-config-network" - anyone guess why the transmit rate on the wireless settings tab is greyed out ?
Why is PyQt4 not in the repositorys?
btw I am using madwifi under F7. Are their administrator docs for system-config-network? (the help file doesn't mention any reason for settings to be greyed out)
i just edited /etc/sysconfig/networking/profiles/default/ifcfg-ath0 but system-network-config ignored my changes and reset the WLAN rate from auto back to 54 Mb/s - so I am lucky that IRC is still working
it's a pretty standard practice to grey out an unsupported or unneeded setting
how are these system-config tools supposed to work ? clearly they don't do what i first expected which is to read in settings from /etc/sysconfig, and write the changes back
according to the help file it is supported - in help it is not greyed out - so there is some subtle reason why it is greayed out
ok i made a seperate partition for fedora and it only shows my full 150gb part with windows on it
are you sure the driver supports it? many a feature has been enabled in configuration tools only to find out the driver doesn't support it
the driver supports it - in fact the bat book recommends that all wlan cards should be set to rate 'auto' unless there is a special engineering reason
anyone know how i select my sperate 20gb partition to instal fedora?
re my comments about how system-config-network seem to overwrite my changes, it turns out the settings are duplicated ( /etc/sysconfig/networking/devices/ifcfg-ath0 has content similar to /etc/sysconfig/networking/profiles/default/ifcfg-ath0 ) so I have more digging to do
Why is PyQt4 not in the repositorys?
i'm in gedit trying to edit example.conf and re-name to my.conf in /usr/local, how do i change to root so i can save it, at the moment it's not letting
misc, your string "69m357y2tbfr0i0TPqDy4g==" is a mime-encoded binary thing
if you visit http://webnet77.com/cgi-bin/helpers/base-64.pl you can paste it in and decode it, but the result is binary
i'm in gedit trying to edit example.conf and re-name to my.conf in /usr/local, how do i change to root so i can save it, at the moment it's not letting
back in a minute - restarting my networking to try these settings
steffan, gedit is running as you, not as root, so save it in /usr/tmp where you have write access, then you'll need to start a new gedit running as root
do you know how to start a root shell?
su -c ?
yeah
su -c "gedit /usr/tmp/my.conf"
right?
ok
then you'll need to save it into the place where you want to save it
cd /usr/local && su -c 'nano example.conf' && su -c 'mv my.conf example.conf'
back again - system-config-network is still overwriting my change to /etc/sysconfig/networking with suboptimal value - where does it get its defaults from?
what's that supposed to do? editing a file while subsequently overwriting it with another is a bit pointless...
save it as my.conf i mean
Is there any update on where USB drive auto mounting disappeared to in the latest kernel updates?
nice english skills
wow, there's a whole thread of people on fedoraforum with the same issue
About my fedora 7 box with auth on ldap, I've noticed that if the auth system points to ldap, X cannot start normally and loop. As soon as I disable ldap auth, gdm give me a normal prompt. Someone knows the cause of this ? (ldap auth work perfectly with fedora 6, same settings)
wohoo i got a dual boot
ok, I've got a weird issue - the clock is stuck on the same time.
I've just booted, and its not ticking at all. I've tried removing it and readding it.
anyone savvy with keymaps / loadkeys?
running date in a console reports the right time
could use some help
wtii?
?
hi there. i have a pre-built package which requires libXm.so.3 (motif), but fedora has only libXm.so.2 installed by now. what would you suggest is the "cleanest" way of providing the library? (symlinking doesn't work properly, the UI is garbaged )
back again - that didn't seem to work
that didn't work too well (had to reboot!) - so for now i will enter 'iwconfig ath0 rate auto' manually after i get connected - until i get another chance to figure out how these scripts work
question for the Experts. Please Splain I mean Explain to me why is this script run instead of just copying the contects of the Mounted ISO?
tar cvf - . | (cd /mnt/usb; tar xvf - )
wt heck it that script do and why that way?
tar copies the permissions properly
and recursively copies too
I am in the the dir where I mounted the ISO /mnt/iso and running that scipt
cp -a
exactly so why the elaborate script from the wiki how to site?
hi, I've been having trouble with my CD/DVD player (not a hardware issue) it only seems to happen with f7
no I've done some troubleshooting and have found this
0 hald-addon-storage: no polling because /dev/scd0 is locked via
I think that may be the problem for all my CD/DVD errors
Anyone know what it means?
I understand that O_EXCL is an oflag for the standard C function open()
sorry about some of the spelling of my words. and grammer. contects= contents. wt heck is that not it alone
cp -a will do the same thing as "tar cvf - . | (cd /mnt/usb; tar xvf - )" why did that post that script and not make is simple for someone like me who is a Simplton
??
that=they
is=it
simplton=simpleton
lol :P
anyhow what is that elaborite script doing? Compressing it then uncompressing it then delivering it to the dir?
no, tar doesn't compress
thats right I forgot
but it does convert the files and dirs to a stream that can be sent to a file, but in this case is piped to a subshell that changes dir elsewhere and then runs tar on the other end of the pipe to read the data from the stream and write it out to files
the subshell is indicated by the ( )
so why not cp -a?
or resync -a
rsync sorry
not sure...there may be subtle differences
well one of those files is an image file could that be why?
knoppix is an image host file
no..files are just files whether they're binary images or text
then I am at a loss unless like you said it some sublties that make that script necessary
ok this is seriously pissing me off. I put a cd in (it works at random) then if it does "work" it'll rip the first queued track up to %3 and then stop
even though there appears to be drive activity (light flashin, whirring noise)
hello
alex[slx], try nodma=ide on the kernelline in grub
any particular reason why my net seems so slow in FC7 ?
Distro^Junkie, no idea mine seems the same or faster
Distro^Junkie, how are you getting your ip address
hmm weird
ok!
DHCP
I finally solved my ldap problem
if nscd isn't running, no login for you
Distro^Junkie, in system-config-network under the dns tab add your isp's dns servers
ok will try that
I use adsl so not sure what they are
will try and find out
anyone here has compiz-fusion?
I love you!
alex[slx], your problem was sounding like an interupt conflict
ahh
what with? how do I find that out?
but since the interupts themselves are handled by linux very well it had to be a dma issue
so should I just perminantly add that kernel boot option or should I fix it?
for now add it
check at every kernel update if you still need it
Ok, done.
http://www.aaa.net.au/campbell/usb.jpg
that first line appears every time I boot:
usb 1-1: device descriptor read/all, error -71
CaneToad, that you have some usb devices it doesnt know what to do with yet
it seems to intermittently get errors like that
other times I have the same usb devices and it doesn't list all that
did you compile your own kernel ?
no
hmmm
first time i have seen those kernel arguments
what usb devices do you have ?
irqpoll and pci-assignbus
irqpoll and pci-assignbusses
the irqpoll and pci-assign-busses are there to work around kernel bugs
CaneToad, btw there is a newer kernel
Problem. The first cd worked like a charm, now I've tried to do another one and I'm getting the same old errors.
alex[slx], no idea then
you can take out the nodma=ide then
