well, i didnt use a torrent... because interestingly, the size of the file was about fifteen MBs bigger after download. i download through http, but it was the same file... although this time, it was 2 MB less.
did you checksum the file before writing it?
nope, i didnt.
checksum that file quickly
could you tell me how to do that? sorry, i'm not experienced in that area.
sha1sum isofile
google for md5sum.exe
ok.
he's on windows
hey
oops!
you are in windows right now, right?
my samba share from my linux box to my windows machine
but he still needs sha1sum
http://mirror.atrpms.net/fedora/linux/development/i386/os/repodata/primary.xml.gz: [Errno -1] Metadata file does not match checksum
normally streams music/media perfectly
yes, frozty_sa.
for some reason it's being a bit laggy today and cutting in and out of my songs/movies
any ideas how to troubleshoot this?
i've restarted my samba service and both boxes, but nothin'
http://www.etree.org/md5com.html
that file, frozty_sa?
try deleting /var/yum/cache/*
hang on, I'll check now
all right.
I've had that problem with samba shares at work and it has always been the windows box that is causing problems... accessing the samba shares with a fedora linux box never fails
where do I find the checksums?
any mirror
/var/cache/yum/ you mean
you could always try access the share via linux (if you don't have an install a decent livecd should work) and see if it still does it to rule out the server being a problem
yes, you can get that one
frozty_sa, ftp://ftp.iasi.roedu.net/mirrors/fedora.redhat.com/linux/releases/7/Live/i386/SHA1SUM
two seconds.
thanks, I was on the way to open a terminal now :-p
frozty_sa, http://fedoranews.org/mediawiki/index.php/Where_can_I_find_sha1sum_program_for_Windows%3F
anyone here use gnome ?
here
yep
most
what you need?
ftp://ftp.gnupg.org/gcrypt/binary/sha1sum.exe
get that one
downloading.
then check that your checksum is the same as the one here: ftp://ftp.iasi.roedu.net/mirrors/fedora.redhat.com/linux/releases/7/Live/i386/SHA1SUM
gnomes, night elves, whatever it takes
where do I get java-1.5.0-sun*src.rpm ?
one question, how to use the file?
both links curtesy of guzu
running it doesn't do anything.
jpackage.org (I've always used the howto @ http://fedorasolved.org for java though)
when i disabled logout menu it still there and it uses the toolbar from the theme i have installed =(
open a command prompt
frozty_sa, well, actually is google and rahul sundaram
:-p
done.
i remember when the logout faded
trying to use the fedorafaq but didn't work for the java part..
now, cd to directory where that image is located
why did they use a crappy logout
??
muumi, what do you need src for?
its using my toolbar theme and it looks shitty
yeah, I used to use that method but in the end the fedorasolved.org method seemed to be less hassle than hunting down jpackage.org's src/nosrc rpms and such
please read the topic
then?
then, copy the sha1sum file into that directory
ok
frozty_sa, he can copy it to cwindows
for fixing jre in my browser...
muumi, x86_64?
it's vista...I dunno where vista keeps it's stuff
scampbell, hollywoodb yum --exclude=cups* update Did the trick
and I'm scared of maybe giving his pc a heart attack
eh, i don't either
)
nox86
I expect we'll have a new cups-libs soon.
then run sha1sum image_name_here.iso
muumi, so what's wrong?
guzu doesn't work from the beginnig?
is there a gconf editor setting to get rid of gnome logout ?
stylish, so pick a theme that doesn't suck? it's not fedora's or gnome's fault that the theme creator doesn't know how to do things right
VERY first thing google turned up: http://www.gnome.org/learn/admin-guide/2.6/ch10s02.html
what's the command to run?
now just compare that output to that of the sha1sum on the page
http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-fedora-f7.html#java
i mean the command prompt command for running a file.
did you copy it into the directory of the image?
s/se/use
yes.
you just type it's name
Dmitry_, cmd
it should have been looked at before they released it
guzu think I go with hollywoodb 's link
muumi; mjmwired.net's java web hosting guide is very similar (but doesn't look as thorough) as fedorasolved.org's
muumi, ok, if something goes wrong (wich i hope not ) you can use thhat link
hollywoodb, i haven't checked fedorasolved recently
i ran "sha1sum.exe Fedora-7-KDE-Live-i686" (without quotation marks).. and that didnt print any positive results.
once again, apologies about knowing little in the area... i've had no experience with this.
what's wrong with the current method?
is that the full file name? what about the extension
oh, yeah. i did end it with .iso
wait
:P
once anyone updates a java installation, then (new) users will need to again re-config all things (alternatives etc) -
is it extremly inadvisable to use more than one package management tool
did it again... cpu usage increased, but no result has yet been returned.
got a result
comparing
I thought alternatives was system-wide
true. but some (new) users don't figure out they need to add a new config number for a new java install (or delete the old profile first) when using alternatives
ah, I see
I propose extracting the .bin to /opt, then symlinking to it
then an update is just a symlink away :-)
is there a gilb compat package in fc6 so i can play lod games ?
glib
soory
would be nice if someone just built sane & supportable RPMs without having to go through the jpackage RPM hoops
ouch
92%
what does /opt do anyway?
sorry for the spelling
it's just a dir for /opt(ional) programs
bbl
the hashes match.
oh is that all
i mean is there a compat package for old games ?
unix filesystem is actually quite descriptive
so it's very likely to be a bad burn?
rename the extracted dir from 1.5.wahtever to 1.5 so that next time you just overwrite files, link is already there, also alternatives etc
then I'd guess it was a bad burn
should i try again on another cd-r from the same box? or should i find a cd-r of better quality? i was burning at 8x using magiciso btw.
stylish, yum list *compat*
frozty_sa; isn't everything optional? :P

it was a multiple-choice question. :P
hmmm....I see one possible problem with that
sorry, I meant go with another box and better disc
Dmitry_; burn at the lowest setting possible.
or do that
rather, first do that
that was the lowest, unfortunately.
frozty_sa, what's that?
all right, thanks.
O_o
maybe the app?
8X is the lowest? :P your media and burner hate each other :P
frozty_sa; what is "the app"? then i can answer that
getting a screenshot.
Dmitry_; what do you use to ....burn... that works
magiciso, as he said
oh yeah. never used it
neither have I
if you're on windows
have used magiciso for all my two operating system burns. both failed. :P
Dmitry_; NICE!
or maybe cdburnerxp
never even heard of it....but then, been a long time since I used windoze for anything except on the uni computers
screenshot of the speeds available on the way. :P
frozty_sa; my friend switched to ubuntu and now can't stand his work compy (moreso than normal :P)
someone seriously needs to make yumex a little faster or standardize on smart
profanity would be something i'd use at this moment... there is now '4x' displayed magically. :P
smart \o/
I just started trying out linux a few years ago and immediately started liking windows less
encrypt it :-p
downhillgames, see what a little gnome can do?
encrypt what? :P
frozty_sa, thats usually how it works
frozty_sa; i liked Windohs never, at least not after Windows 95 came out :P
lol downhillgames xp was the first decent windows
vista isnt bad
3.11 was the *ONLY* decent windows as far as i'm concerned
deleting running files for the win

the problem is that it honestly doesn't offer a lot that you couldn't allready get from 3rd party apps
uthe problem is that it honestly doesn't offer a lot that you couldn't allready get from 3rd party apps/u
If you'll look though, you'll find I use fedora.
mikerose357; we are talking about every windows since 98se, right? :P
and seriously why not rip off expose properly instead of that stupid flip 3d
oh, wait. i think i now know why 4x wasn't available... lemme take another screenshot with a cd-r loaded.
lmao
that helps
well dont forget w98 3rd edition
ohyeahjava works
Dmitry_; i'd suggest using deepburner or something... something free and lightweight that "just works" :P
screw 98 unstable as hell
magiciso + crack is free. :P
yes 98 was not very stable
but once they did get it working they ruined it with me
ME
hey, we could all install winME
haha
I remember running 3d studio max on 98 and saving every couple minutes so I wouldn't lose much when it crashed
mikerose357; amen
do you know how many microsoft employees got fired due to ME
had to install windows NT for it to be stable
what if a (stupid) user already has a dir named "1.5" and then tries to rename the new extracted dir to "1.5"....
yeah
f_newton; not enough.
lol
XP was a big step up
XP, at release time, was good.
yes it was a major improvement
peace
well to be proper 2000/XP were a big step up
frozty_sa, right, but nothing can stpop a stupid user anyway
SP1 was sliding downward slightly... SP2 killed it for me
w2k was the first of the modern generation stable operating systems
from microsoft
frozty_sa, and i said something something wrong, miranda said that dir must be empty before extracting the new version
why is #politics on freenode so full of crackpots?
f_newton; i know windows users who wont let go of 2k no matter what you say to them lol
erm...because it's #politics?

f_newton, right, first time i felt they learned something from linux
remove it # and it's self explanatory

that's what's available for me.
Dmitry_; use 8X

and the results were:
yeah, i was thinking DVD
kmod-fglrx ?

there's a finnish saying that dumbness largens in groups
if the sha1sum checked out then its a bad burn... I've heard deepburner is good for windows, but I haven't used it
f_newton; take care, cya ^_^
is muumi finnish?
could it be iso's fault? oh, and another thing i found out... for some reason, vista chose to display the file size of the iso as 702 MB in the folder view, under column 'Size'... however, when i go to the file's properties, i see 686 MB.
along discussing the GPL with an RMS worshipper, listening to how people lump alian abduction freaks in with the "real" conspiracies to make them look sily
yeah
thanks, i'll try that.
so now I know two things of finnish origin. Nightwish, and Muumi
so, do i put in the kmod for the ati?
Dmitry_; please dont ask me to figure that out. i dont need a migrain :P
i wont. :P
next time try sonata arctica, leverage or brother firetribe
that's almost as bad as figuring out Intel mobo/cpu/ram
hollywoodb, sometimes the check will fail even if the burn is ok
Dmitry_, VODKA
some better music
oops that was for Dmitry_ ^
dunno. I don't need the kmod drivers since my card supports it
I'll try to get some of that sometime
you're on fc6 right?
yum seem strange...wants to install kmod+xorg driver+kernel (which is already running)
yes
also, i dont think there's a need for a re-download. i have two copies -- one through http, and one through a torrent. i'll delete the http one and seed the torrent.. then i'll burn it if i find a better disc.
i live in england, and im underage for alcohol. :P

it will pull the latest kernel (and headers), as the driver builds a module which is kernel version specific
aMoRPHeouS; what app spits that out?
and i already updated the kernel..
is there any bugs in fc7 with grub not loading at boot up?
building compiz? just make the group and add your user to it
as to the xorg stuff, I really don't know the finer points about how the driver works
and still it wants to reinstall...
downhillgames, trying to rebuild compiz from source rpms
aMoRPHeouS; oh wait... are you using root to "make" ?
bigmatt, may be
aMoRPHeouS; you should be root for "make"
hmm..goodquestion is, do i really need it
ah, ok
thanks downhillgames
I am running raid1 and it just hangs where grub would usually show up
do you have kernel AND headers, or just kernel?
dunno
bigmatt, have you seen this? http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Bugs/F7Common#head-d1878f727aee67ffbe1d9326df19d2b4e1f39ef3
th
thx*
np
let it go, and then see what happens
just did
aMoRPHeouS; did it work?
always the same..try fail. try and after two weeks it might work
yeah, it sucks
too many spaces again ..
downhillgames, compiling. I'll know in a few minutes
aMoRPHeouS; gl
but oh well, it's a lot better than it was at one time
downhillgames, afaik it should be root only for make install, usually
thanks
do you think i'll encounter any difficulties whilst trying to install fedora 7 on a 4.87 GB FAT32 partition alongside vista?
yes
hooray. :P
guzu; mmmm i've had to be root to avoid errors for a looong time but i was taught to be root only for "make install" as well. *shrug*
firstly, the fat32 shouldn't be fat32
dont know about that..redhat6.2 was the first i tried and worked fine
Dmitry_, you should change partition type and filesystem
aMoRPHeouS; what version are you compiling?
downhillgames, worked
nah, I mean drivers and stuff
compiled* hehe
what should it be?
downhillgames, i see
ah yes
ntfs? fat16?
but don't worry, the fedora installer will do it
same difference
package kernel-2.6.20-1.2962.fc6 is already installed
downhillgames, compiz-0.5.1-0.9.20070716git
guzu; it must have changed somewhere somehow someway. *shrug*
andthen a bunch of errors
it will re-format it to a suitable file system?
but brb
pastebin
yes
aMoRPHeouS; ....what fedora release?
Dmitry_, type 83, ext3 file system
downhillgames, FC6
aMoRPHeouS; aaaaaaaah ok. that makes more sense now
hence having to build from source
just make sure you WATCH what you are doing during the setup and don't just blindly click yes
yes
i see. i'll let fedora take care of it. with vista's disk manager, the only choices are ntfs and fat32.
aMoRPHeouS; enjoy i love it on F7
cheers
Dmitry_, will take care of the filesystem but is recommended to change partition type (although i suspect it will wotk without )
i tend to read everything a few times when installing something new... and something as significant. i've had troubles with this computer in the past.
Dmitry_; if deepburner doesn't work, Vista is retarded or your burner is bad.
ok. just make sure you read very carefully in the setup, especially near partitions
that logic is faulty
Dmitry_, it's good to let vista create partition, there are issues with the last cylinder + windows
i'll still rely on the installer. :P changing the partition type will bring in more problems that i'll need to fix. that's the trend of new things meeting me. :P
and vista will avoid them
frozty_sa; but not improbable!
2 ISOs which sha1um match and 2 different apps?
well, i've not yet decided what i'm going to burn on.. since i have a few cheap cd-rs and a few dvd-rs... but i dont want to waste them.
no, it's flawed. "if deepburner doesn't work, vista is retarded"....this then makes a given fact become dependent upon an undecided factor....
will do.
oooh, i can tell you for sure, vista _is_ retarded! i created a data dvd on vista and there was no other os in the world able to read it
frozty_sa; deep burner uses it's own engine for burning as far as i know. meaning it would be driver-related or the physical device.
i've created the partition already, and made it fat32 thinking that's what fedora wants.
that's a feature
that's fine, just let fedora installer reformat it, you can leave the partition size alone
hollywoodb, that's what i was afraid of
I'm just implying that it should maybe read, "vista is retarded, this might cause deepburner to fail" :-p
Dmitry_; keep an eye out on the shoppers for stores (weekly ads), some times you see 50 DVD-R spindles for $5 each
Dmitry_, have you tried to install without mediacheck?
all right. do you think 4.87 GB will be enough for fedora? i don't intend to install huge applications. it's my first linux experience. strangely, i've never even seen a linux system in real life. im just planning to use the internet, mainly.
you get week specials?! some pc shops here only run 'em for the weekend...then when you find out about it, it's already past :-?
frozty_sa; sure. either way it's ironic how little things actually do break compared to how many system failures Windows XP gets w/ me. let alone driver stuff. i'd rather have 100% working sound than my webcam working (which barely *ever* gets used)
nope, i thought that it'd be safer with verification; i dont want it to mess up half-way.
Dmitry_, _only if you limit the installed things very carefully_
frozty_sa; where are you located?
said*
yeah, i saw 25 DVD-Rs for £0.47 (that's around $1)... but it was sold out.
take a guess
Dmitry_, fedora needs extra space during install, you can add things later
I've got a fair amount of stuff installed & I'm using 3.2GB (Gnome, openoffice, media players, few games)... but you should have an extra swap partition (usually size is 2x amount of RAM you have)
I've got a fair amount of stuff installed & I'm using 3.2GB (Gnome, openoffice, media players, few games)... but you should have an extra swap partition (usually size is 2x amount of RAM you have)
it says a smartass.
za.... not sure where za is
well, i want to make sure that everything is perfect and cant go wrong... or something as close to that as possible.
hahaha...time to traceroute, it seems
south africa
frozty_sa; south... google ftw
i read in a book about linux host that the swap partition should be 4 times my ram.
does anyone have a nvidia card with duel monitor working with both screens?
not a strict rule but more in the line of rule of thumb
how much ram you got in?
then i was a little worried.. since i have 1 GB of ram... and the partition is 4.87 GB. that means 870 MB will be for the rest of partitions.. which is little, i think.
Dmitry_; Instructions to make your PC error-free: 1) Pull power cable. 2) Walk away.
kRiMe8, yes
that's a bit extreme... if you're just going to do desktop-type stuff (and/or games) you shouldn't need that much unless you've only got 256MB of RAM or less
Dmitry_, how much ram do you have?
"Package compiz-0.5.1-0.9.20070716git.i386.rpm is not signed" :/
you need to publish that in a book. will be a bestseller. :P
Dmitry_, ok, i've just read above
Dmitry_; books are the old, blogs are the now! /me kills self
i miss Web 1.0
kRiMe8, what card
you shouldn't need a swap partition bigger than maybe 512, especially if you're only first learning/using linux
hello Southern_Gentlem ...brb
Dmitry_, unless you are a heavy linux user, you can live without swap imho at this ram size, but it's always better to have it around
i use my current OS, Vista, to play games... and do virtually anything. however, just internet browsing and file editing with linux... i dont intend to install anything big. i usually use the computer to chat through irc and msn... and then use the internet.
geforce FX5500
had to find a purpose for the local library. :P
Dmitry_, wich means you shouldalso create 1gb of swap, imho
Dmitry_, man that was old the ones the oldest ones i have every seen said 2xram
Dmitry_; a quick note. i have 4GB of DDR2 but i keep a 4GB SWAP around *JUST IN CASE* ... say 3 of my sticks die... i can just enable swap and continue like normal
well, like guzu said you might be able to get by without a swap partition, but still recommend to have one 2x RAM
all right. does this mean i'll have to create partitions manually?
Dmitry_; yeah
yup
downhillgames, slower but it will work
you would've almost needed to anyway
but wait...
can I force yum to install unsigned packages?
aMoRPHeouS,
nope
you mean that now the swap partitions are becoming less the times of ram?
damn :/
you can however tell it not to check
how so?
4 gb... dang. now that's nice. i dont understand what kind of applications you run though :s
man yum.conf
using the partion edit screen, just choose that hard drive partition where you want to install to, and then it will do the rest self
ok
Dmitry_, revisor
Dmitry_, no i mean the oldest linux books articles i have ever seen said 2 X ram
not 4 X ram as you quoted earlier
i see... well, mine said 4x... i'll quote it in a sec.
i have a geforce FX 5500
kRiMe8, uname -r
Southern_Gentlem; i have a youtube video for you (self-made) if that's alright. it's my p3
kRiMe8, rpm -q livna-release
http://www.johnmunsch.com/articles/FedoraCoreGettingStarted/index_files/screenshots/jpg/installation/screenshot-0007.jpeg
would it be that screen?
my cat is licking a plugged-in light bulb and i almost dont want to stop her. hahaha. dumb cat.
nope
that one is VERY Old
there we about swap"Fswap
i see. I dont think i'll have time to read all that, though. :P
downhillgames, is it turned on
yeah, i was gonna apologize about the age of the screenshots.
danm, wrong thing
Dmitry_, you will
is there any place i could view installation screenshots of recent releases of FC?
but don't worry. it is in a similar layout and it will be quite easy to use it
i'll hope so then. :P
hang on quickly
Southern_Gentlem; http://youtube.com/watch?v=VpOuqyDSfTM
all right
"i can just enable swap and continue like normal" can you disable swap???
kRiMe8, hello
quoting from the book
the black screen is from RAM constaints, not the software.
you'll see...
Southern_Gentlemv i just found the tutoial thank you though i internet is really slo
"Normally you will need to create a swap partition which should be about four times the size of the memory in your computer. For example, if you have 64 megabytes of RAM a suitable size for your swap partition is 256 megabytes.
http://www.howtoforge.com/perfect_server_fedora7
"This edition published 2004"
thanks.
Dmitry_, throw that book away
library book. :P
return it
will have to return it on the 30th this month
Dmitry_, throw it into the same garbage can with harry potter
:O
after i finish reading a little more. :P it's good to do something besides going to the bathroom or the kitchen or using the computer. :P
i'd never spend money on harry potter.. nor would i spend time on downloading/reading it.
zcat; the fact the dude is naked on broadway or whatever bothers me to no end :P
get rute
searching on google for it.
rute.pdf
hey, i found a *really* *really* *REALLY* neat GUI tool that i'd reccommend to any standard iptables (firewall) user.
Hey, sorry if i bothering, i cant get audio to play right on any video player i try.
i think Southern_Gentlem gave me that link. i'll bookmark it.
frozty_sa, which i linked him to already
yum install firestarter
it lets you easily config *whatever,* it reads out ifconfig, netstat and iptables, you can start/stop iptables, etc
ah..sorry, I missed that while firefox had focus
Dmitry_, i would read any more of that box
soooo handy
wouldnt
http://www.amazon.com/Teach-Yourself-Linux/dp/0071439730
that's the book.
even rute which was written in the early 90s says 2xram
Dmitry_; the penguin looks like he's gonna kick my arse haha
Can anyone point me out to somewhere where i can fix my audio playback issues?
he looks like a demonic penguin
:P
CountX; what's the problem exactly?
its all choppy
brb.
CountX; what chip and how are you outputting (S/PDIF? wha)
The problem with the 2x RAM rule is that it gives you more swap on a system with more RAM. Obviously, that's not necessarily right, since a machine with massive amounts of RAM won't need any swap.
well, im kinda new, but im on a lappy
oh a laptop... hmm... /me passes the bar to someone else
if you google: https://www.redhat.com/archives/redhat-list/2003-June/msg00057.html follow the discussion, 2x ram tends to dilute these days
laptops are not my thing... sorry
ah...ok
anywhere i can look up info on
i owned 3, returned 3 :P
ctyler, not what we where talking about
um it's probably ALSA related or due to RAM constraints
but i can't say that's it... again... you should ask someone else
well, its a highend lappy,..
2gb ram
returned.
all right.
thanks for the screenshots, by the way. looking at them.
np
CRASH69; i have 4GB/4GB RAM/SWAP. meh. how could i need more than 4-8GB of ram? haha
i should say 5-8 since i can't run w/o system ram
!ati
juanmabc; !sucks
juannicolas; !sucks* whoops
i am about ready to make a script if someone does a ! it kicks them
Where can i lookup on how to fix it?
Southern_Gentlem; i'll host the bot
downhillgames, we dont need any bots
hi, did I said that?
juannicolas, knows better
CountX; find out your sound card chip model and put it in http://www.google.com/linux
CountX, lspci should help with finding that info
well, i know what chip it is, and in the vlc audio panel it displays the right hardware...
CRASH69; did you said that? idk, did you? :P your link talks about SWAP space arrangements
idkmbff jill?
what do you mean lspci
CountX; Southern_Gentlem said that but in a terminal type "lspci" w/o the " marks
"follow the discussion, 2x ram tends to dilute these days"
thanks, i've read through it. i'm wondering -- how much space will be available for my use. in other words, how much space does fedora 7 need, excluding the swap partition?
follow mean... ehhh read on... downhillgames
CRASH69; i'm really hyped/tired from yard work all day. forgive.
command not found
"command not found?" A: Run the command AS ROOT after switching users with "su --login" or "su -" in order to get root's command PATH so the command WILL be found; don't run "su" by itself. If it's still not found, then either it's not installed in a standard path location (echo $PATH), is
not executable (chmod a+x), is in your current dir (./runme), or you've spelled it incorrectly.
CountX; /sbin/lspci or /usr/sbin/lspci
nevermind
Southern_Gentlem; see why i add that default path?
s/path/PATH/
is it possible for you to say a line with out a or or :O on the end
is there a help in how to install ATI on F7?
ikonia; yes.
no
ikonia,
well...I don't know if it works yet, at least
ikonia; just needs a hug.
I was looking for some helps in the net and there few of them but I want to be sure if there's one that really works
downhillgames, so why was that for me?
what card have you got?
Readeon
Southern_Gentlem; was it not you who was interested in the p3 running it previously... perhaps not.
nope
i'm sorry
juannicolas, use the radeon driver
yes, but what model?
ati doesnt support the version of xorg in f7
ATI FireGL V5200 with 256MB
they do as of 8.39.4
straw; would FC6 or F7 be better for ATi this moment?
see all later
fedora is pretty nice
one of the bast distros
i need to convert an Ubuntu compy over in a few days...
of course it is :-)
it's one of the fist distro's too
FC6 is and was fine, both are fine as of that version, downhillgames
straw; ah. so F7 should be alright. can i/he use Livna or is this with the AMD/ATi installer only
'course performance can't touch nvidia nor is there accelerated composite yet
i hear there are differences
it's a X300SE PCi-e btw
yeah, there's a minor problem with a missing file that causes a 'testing only' watermark to display
over what?
so we're (Livna) waiting for ATi to fix it
lower left corner of the screen
So, there's no ATI drivers yet working for F7
straw; ah. that's annoying.
there is but with a watermark issue
well at least the driver works
and it can be updated later
but Can i still use the desktop effect?
juannicolas; according to straw
i've been using fglrx 8.39.4 for weeks on F7 without issue
straw so, can you give me the how to please?
straw; better yet, give me the howto and i'll update my nvidia howto to be a ATi/nVidia howto feel free to PM me on Fedoraforum or something if you write one so i can add it
if^
download the installer, pass --buildpkg Fedora/F7 on the command line, install the resulting rpms for now
soon as ATi take care of the watermark problem, Livna will have packages
ok
then either keep the generated rpms or remove them and install Livna's
ok
thank you
using the installer directly will generate the missing file and the watermark won't display, but using the installer directly might be a pain if you aren't sure of things
does fedora not have different installations for 32bit and 64bit
x86 and x86_64, so yeah.
i m getting "error activating XKB configuration" on startup
Mathman, it says i386 x86_64 and I thought they were one link (ie had a _ between), thanks mate
hello
can someone talk me through installing fedora. i am currently running ubuntu
i have no cd drive so need to install via the internet
I would use grub to boot the installer
ok yumex sucks horribly
i must add that i totally suck at linux
a grub to me is a maggot
i downloaded boot.iso and i dont know what to do with it
Grub is your bootloader
it can boot the fedora installer, called anaconda
how is a girl supposed to know that lol
ok so where do i stick the boot.iso?
how did you install ubuntu?
my laptop was windows so i downloaded an installer
but there is no double click in ubuntu for installing files etc
I'm having some trouble installing java.
Using the instructions on fedorafaq.org
and i dont like ubuntu so wanted to change to fedora 7
Missing Dependency: ATI-fglrx = 8.35.5-1.f7 is needed by package ATI-fglrx-devel
When I try to enable the repo jpackage-nonfree this happens: http://pastebin.ca/628212
there isn't in Fedora either. Fedora and Ubuntu are very similar.
oh wait
oh
if you find Ubuntu lacking, there's a good chance you'll find Fedora lacking as well.
you'll need to install all four rpms at once
so what do i do then
hrm, I liked yumex better than pirut for various reasons -- what is your opinion about what sucks specifically about yumex ?
i really hate ubuntu
sorry i did not see them
my bad
That is for you to decide
try fedora and see if you like it?
100%
doesnt even play divx and xvids etc
does fedora
now I have to burn the dvd
i like yum
since 9am
but yeah, does anyone know anything about my issue?
rpm -ivh ATI-fglrx*.rpm or so
Ok, done
all 4 pkg installed
i think i still wana try fedora
go ahead, nothing's stopping you
now just reboot
Both Ubuntu and Fedora will play those files with some configuration on your end. Fedora won't play any non-free formats by default
see you in a sec
but hook up with livna repo and you should for the most part be gold
*whine* *complain* *blame* ..
so where do i put the boot.iso i downloaded to do a network install of fedora/
So... nobody can help me with my java troubles?
ilovefedora, on a cd
i dont have a cd drive
lolwtf
achtung_rofl, what the heck are you trying to do
ilovefedora, go back to winblows
http://fedorasolved.org/browser
I guess I'll re-paste.
what are you trying to do i have scrolled
hum
Frankly, I think you're in over your head here, but here's what you want to do: Get the files needed to boot the Fedora installer, put them in /boot/. Edit /etc/grub.conf to add an entry for the Fedora Installer pointing to the files you just added, reboot, choose the entry from the grub
menu
That's what I'm trying to do, and it's failing hard.
got an error
achtung_rofl, answer my question
umm where can i find the fedora help channel?
why are you trying to do that
no screen found
http://www.fedorafaq.org/#java
Because it says to do it there?
juannicolas, ati doesnt work in f7
what say to so that
you're in it.
oh ok
isn't there some way for him to do a network-install?
do that
just ask a question
so i have a question
but
ask it, don't ask to ask .. just ask
WebDragon, yumex is slow in every part of its operation
The files you need are found here: http://redhat.download.fedoraproject.org/pub/fedora/linux/releases/7/Fedora/i386/os/isolinux/ and are called vmlinuz and initrd.img
straw did you did some changes to xorg?
WebDragon, he has to be able to burn the iso to at least a cd
I should be able to open .jars too right?
but it becomes profoundly slow when trying to resolve a large depenancy chain
ive been trying to find my Service IP so i can forward my shoutcast ports and apache. How can i do that :-\
With those instructions?
yes
Ok, thank you.
certainly do not ask about asking if its ok to ask a questio
n
service ip?
what'sa that?
both smart and yumex fail to upgrade fedoras python to 2.5 from dev repo
yes
considering yumex is using yum for its backend, I can't see how yumex would be that much slower than yum is
ip service?
straw, so?
F7 also saw a nice speed boost for yum
but yum took almost an hour to figure out all the dependancies and fail
yumex that is
ifconfig?
Why you did not tell me that i had to do chages on it?
no, its like the ip address host that only the people on your router see, so like, my dads computer would be 192.168.0.120 or something
subman, you want to know which IP your ISP has given you?
what do i do with them
so... what?
sounds like, if nothing else, it's good for a bug report to the yumex developers so they can fix what's wrong
/sbin/ifconfig
what are the changes?
that is a private ip .. never heard of "service ip"
juannicolas, i have
oh, you don't. the changes should have already happened at install time
thats what my router calls it szec
szec service ip is a winblows term
Southern_Gentlem you have?
anyone using rsnapshot?
interesting .. i don't use windows and never will
you must not like games szec heh
i do like the cute terms they come up with though
i love games
juannicolas, i told you ati does nt support the xorg in f7
hahahahahahahaha, thank you guys! i knew i could find help here
but i use the proper medium .. a console
lol I prefer computer gaming
yes you did
and you'd be wrong as of fglrx release 8.39.4
btw I hope you don't own a 360 then considering it runs a derivative of windows
have you updated the rpms yet straw
can you run linux on a 360? heh
to me that's like using a team of horses to pull your car around town
yeah
xxbox?
straw and it that the one they just released and then retracted
yup
you can on an old xbox I don't know if you can on a 360
my bro runs linux on the ps3
then how to I revert the installation
fricken sweet
I know ms doesn't want you to
Fedora PS3
mmhmm
oh they pulled it?
its on google video
one expensive secure linux web hosting box, heh
hahahahaha its preety cool, i wanna install beryl on it
straw according to others earlier today
they did. damn it
yes
thats you found my service/private ip
damn it
addr:192.168.0.171
just got home from work and hadn't noticed
I dunno about the 360 I prefer my pcs to be properly cooled and free of defects
*headdesk*
some people aren't happy until they've found every way possible to hack something
others aren't happy until someone else has done all the groundwork and they can go through hours of pain trying to reproduce it
and they replaced it with 8.38.6 and not 8.38.7. what an amazing level of incompetence...
8.38.6 eats xorg.conf! GAHH!
I think its better not to buy hardware from people that want to tell you how you can use it
so Im fu**
now
i'll help you recover
thank yuou
and i apologize :/
no hard fealings
woot
im back
dang. i was reading the scrollback and wanted to ask subman some s.... HI
Subman; what *doesn't*/*WILL NOT* work on a p3?
sorry, ps3*
not sure
I already remove the ATI pakgs
like does the whole distro compile and run fine?
i only have fc on it
first remove the rpms we installed
i dont know, my bro messes with that stuff
Subman; ah. i'm curious because it has 9 cores or some shiz. it *has* to be fast.
has your xorg.conf been removed?
no
I do have xorg.conf and a old one
anyone experienced difficulties moving from fedora 6 to 7?
-original
i wanna get a quad core 3.0 intel
have a look and restore the original
then reboot
rm xorg.cong then mv xorg-original-0 xorg.conf
mv xorg.conf xorg.conf.ati
mv xorg-original-0 xorg.conf
and reboot
you should be back to where you were before this little fiasco
straw; and a HowTo was born!
eheheh
don't assume the ps3 is fast because of the number of cores
mikerose357; indeed. they do specialized things. but if the kernel can use those instructions, it has to see some improvement
its very capable of rendering 3d graphics
got my Xwindow back
only 1 core is "cpu" as i read about it
that doesn't neccesarily mean it is very fast at other things especially not without optimized code
So, seat tight and wait for ATI to release a stable driver
mikerose357; i'd just assume the ps3 would be prime to write for, that's all.
for games
mikerose357; afterall, you aren't buying a lot of games afterwards :P
haha not at that pricetag
rent copy return
exactly i'm just saying there are reasonable reasons to think there would be some usefulness to running Linux on it
mikerose357; like DVDs or VHSs back in the day?
for those of you who don't know ...
"the day" was actually a wednesday
heh
how do I make yum understand that i already have kernel 2.6.20-1.2962 installed?
rpm -q kernel
67.149.16.96 ------ can someone connect to this ip?
rafb.net/paste
how did you install the kernel?
O k the dvd's done
later
szec 2.6.18-1.2798 and 2. 6.20-1.2962
yes
trying to install fglrx driver
omg sooo you see my forum directory?!
stock fc6 kernel + latest fc6 kernel
i said yes.
WOOOOOT
hahahaha
yes
Don't know why is it, but for some reason my USB disk desapears from my desktop and is not mounted to the box.
I have to disconnect it and then back again
szec:and using livna repo for the kmod-fglrx requires 2.6.20-1.2962
which it means isn't installed...
juannicolas, did you add it to fstab?
which means what isn't installed?
not familiar with "it"
yum
yum is not installed?
mikerose357 why should I? It suppost to stay there once you plugit in
true but if its not doing what you want it to do that would solve the problem
even running latest kernel..uname gi ves2.6.20-1.2962.fc6 #1 SMP
unfortunately i don't follow what you want
I don't know, is like that if the OS disconnect the drive beacause is not using it
trying to get ati driver installed from livna repo
where is the problem?
conflicting package
you've failed to properly illustrate what you are having trouble with
rafb.net/paste
can't help you if there are no errors to interpret
jep,just doing that
if nscd is not running, there is no dns caching?
doesn't the stack within the kernel do its own caching?
what stack ?
network
http://rafb.net/p/qQMPR258.html
no.
hrm
your dns server is caching the information.
nscd is doing it
and if nscd isnt running?
and *some* software are doing it
(and no local dns server)
try, like firefox
er, true
firefox does more than dns caching. It caches an url
with document, and the rest.
chrismon, your nat router should be doing dns caching too.
yum -d 0 list kernel
zcat, i'm just concerned about the local machine
doubtful
paste it to the same place
ok tested it
watch port 53 while using telnet
chrismon, 'dig' some random domain twice and compare the query time.
both tests produced the same dns requests
heh year or do what I just did with a dns client that's not caching
how do i do ls -al *.txt but only the files which are created in a certain month say july?
huh, i always assumed that the network stack did some caching
doesnt mean your system is caching.
ed1t, find
http://rafb.net/p/UfYE7g35.html
heh n/m
i'd grep
dig is a dns client, it will query the dns server every time.
heh
seems it wants the i686 package?
that is your trouble
Anvil, yes, i know how it works. i thought the question was determining *if* caching was going on
i didnt want to *directly* point that out
you have the anaconda bug from fc6
zcat, what he's saying is that dig will always bypass a local cache
uname -a still says i686 in use?
you need an i686 kernel .. you have an i586
no
incorrect
dig just has it's own resolution engine. Wont use the one in the libc.
you need to remove those 2 kernels and install a correct i686 from any official mirror
anyone know how to set the interval settings for rsnapshot?
s/it's/it/s
Anvil, right, so also compare the diff between two runs of "time host spam.com"
same goes for host
host will query the dns server *every* time
so its lying to me http://rafb.net/p/gWs26S75.html
a program just doing gethostbyname would tell you about caching.
yep
uname -i
How I make my sb1 partion mountable???
like telnet
i have to go .. my mom is here
lunch time
hi mommy
Like i want to put the dvd in there
i386 :o
have a nice one
if there's a filesystem on it, it can be mounted.
its new
empty
80GB
I want to put my dvd "f7 on it so I can install it
Anvil, i guess i don't understand the question then
hey, anybody skilled with the win-pvr-usb2 get the fm radio playback playing okay w/out glitches?
can't find /dev/sdb in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab
read the man mount.
omfg
muhahahaha
anyone here use wine ?
yes
What you need
cxoffice here
the fc6 release kicks ass
I use vmware to avoid all the emu...
Going to try to learn XEN
I don't use wine. I have been known to abuse it, tho
streeter, thats my boy
is there any way to only get mail from certin email addys with kmail i own a few domaines and get spamed a lot ?
use evolution
or thunderbird
never use a program that starts with 'k'
Sinister, it's called don't use a domain catchall
srry
I closed it by mistake
i guess that would be the easy way
good luck getting evolution to work
with outofluck and all that is
er outlook
i have evolution and kmail set up i dont know outlook
wtf
--delete delete files that donbzcat, yeah,
er
--delete delete files that donbthats from the
that's from the rsync manual...and stinking ircII is misinterpreting, sigh
"delete files that don't exist on sender"
what the heck does that mean? "run rsync from machine A and delete files on machine B" ?
chrismon, self-explanatory
not really
or i wouldnt have asked
it makes no sense that rsnapshot would delete the files you are trying to back up as deault behavior
and, infact it seems its not deleteing them
i see pages for hdparm in fedora 7 but they still say /dev/hdc why is that and why dont it seem to work right with my sata and ide hard drives ?
i could mean that it delete the local ones before copying, but that doesnt make much sense either
lol 2 version of rsync have different explanations of the same option
chrismon, rsnapshot (which uses rsync) is a different case. deleted files are only --delete'd from THAT snapshot or newer, but the hardlinks in the rotated snapshots still exist (until rotated to dev/null)
delete == "remove from file list" ?
okwhatever it means, it does not mean its attempting to delete the backup source?
yes?
chrismon, --delete is one of the most common rsync options (besides -a). I don't see what's so hard to understand about it
if you rsync A to B, then delete some files in A, --delete will propagate those files on B too, so they're in sync.
otherwise you leave a mess of deleted files on B
ooooh
and they're not really in sync
you mean a mess of undeleted files
"--delete remove files on the destination filesystem which no longer exist on the source filesystem"
that would've been better
or "synchronize files deleted from the source" would even have been better
can someone help me fix my grub.confg i updated my kernel and must have f@cked up because grub loads but it cannot find the vmlinuz
probabaly a disk label issue
is there an editor in the grub terminal
or you're still using the /dev/hd* devices in your grub.conf.
these have recently disappeared
kRiMe8, boot off of your install cd
(or if you were smart enough to leave your old kernel in there, boot off that)
and edit your grub.conf
ok i booted into the rescue cd now i just need to edit my grub.confg right
new fedora, SAM_theman?
no
still on 6
Trying to mount my sdb1
and putting the DVD in there but no luck
I cant like mount it
if there a partion program for fedora
instead of fdisk
60min, so I dunno what you mean
try cfdisk?
or parted/gparted
its sata
hmm? does parted and/or cfdisk not recognize sata?
I don't know
should recognize it
I just want to install f7
gparted doesnt recognize lvm. not sure about parted i think its a little different
sorry man, movie starts now. hope you get it working. if you don't and you're still in when I get back later I'll see if I can help
NOO
!partion
k, I can give you some help quickly
what's the problem? you mentioned you can't mount sdb1?
Has anyone got a known good document/url reference for putting FC 7 on an Intel Mac mini, I've found lots on Mac PPC, but little on Intel
nope, sorry
does anything look wrong with this url string
http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/development/i386/os/
no problem, thanks
looks fine
its a 403
mikerose357, 404
what do you need?
sorry 404
its what I have for the development repo
anyone have fedora core 6 and want to tell me what the proper url is?
you could always dig through the tree yourself?
indeed it is just a different branch off teh tree
http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/development/$basearch/os/
omg...
Why is fedora sooo hard at making a partion
fdisk works fine
even then installer works fine
sweet, I finaly found out how to auto join channels when pidgin starts.... no more /join #fedora everytime i log on
what are you referring to specifically?
WebDragon, damaged braincells
I am trying to put my DVD ON my SDb and fedora is being a bitch about it
I like xchat a lot better than pidgin for irc
you still gotta auth to nickserv manually though, don't you?
I prefer xchat too -- not only for its scriptability but for other things as well
its got a nice ui
Trying to mount my second hardrive and it's not fuking working
pidgin's good to get started with though, I gotta admit
no, the NickPassword is the same as the channel password
it's pretty clean
Pidgen is really sweet
Nice name from gaim...
if you (fdisk -l) does it get listed ?
yup
i'll take a look at XChat , i'm used to pidgin already though, but i'm sure it could be better
aim was a ripoff of a name
which device is it and which partition do you want to mount?
gaim was rather
bear in mind that gnome-xchat IS NOT xchat
two different things
its good they chose a more unique name
I didn't like gnome-xchat
I prefer the main xchat itself to gnome-xchat
dunno why they bothered
ok one sec (*click*)
i have kde anyway so i don't really use gnome-*
Trying to mount it as linux , tried windows it won't do it
trying to mount /dev/sdb1 somewhere in your linux system?
tried it
please, don't make me pull teeth -- explain in more detail
tried *what*
tried to do what
SAM_theman http://fedorasolved.org/post-install-solutions/ntfs-read-write/ that might help you
it won't mount because there's no directives for it in /etc/fstab for that partition
can someone show me what my grun.conf should look like
is it a linux partition?
I added a mount thingy in there
seems to be from fdisk -l
well yes
ok so (mkdir /mnt/linuxextra) for a mountpoint to test with
hi, ok selinux has blocked me out
then mount -t auto /dev/sdb1 /mnt/linuxextra
if that doesn't work then we look elsewhere for issues
a simple mount /device isn't going to work unless /etc/fstab knows what to DO with that device
when it drops me in a shell during bootup, i cannot modify any files. it's read-only mode.
how to override this?
same way mount /media/usbdisk isn't going to do anything unless /etc/fstab knows what device to attach to that mountpoint
i am in a '(Repair Filesystem) 1#' prompt. what can i do from here, since the system is mounted as read-only?
it's the same as if I handed you one end of a cable and said to you "attach this"
you'd give me a blank look too
DaHood, are you ok with data loss?
WebDragon, i don't understand. car analogy pleez
hmm *potential* data loss
ROFL
and that sure doesn't sound like "selinux" has locked you out
sounds like you're in rescue mode
wow
same error
pastebin please
forget it
no seriously
let's see the error msg
http://pastebin.com/m4c716813
#141
you probably want to use 'c' insted of 'b' as your partition type
daMaestro, i have backups all right
daMaestro, but nevertheless, i am not OK with data loss
oh wait, it's an NTFS partition ?
yes
why the (*(*&$ did you go in and change the partition type?
I changed it
in the first place
Because the *(%@% linux didn't work
you should have left the partition type AS NTFS
DaHood, well.. why do you think this is the fault of selinux
SAM_theman, ...... you have to format a partition before you can mount it.
and then found out why you were unable to mount an NTFS partition properly
SAM_theman, you can't just magically set the partition type
are you sure it's a clean partition?
is there data on that partition?
nope
is it your windows drive?
ok so it's a clean partition
iot's empty
YUP
ok that's completely differenyt
do you want it to BE a linux partition?
theres no pron or crap on it
yes
ok then fdisk /dev/sdb
I want to use it so I can just put MY fedoa 7 dvd and install it from there
set the partition type to 83
save it
daMaestro, i originally had two HDDs in the system. this error occured when i had connected only one of them. now i connected the second one, rebooted and i am in
i am in
ok
DaHood, this is not because of selinux
then mke2fs -j /dev/sdb1
http://fedorasolved.org/post-install-solutions/add-new-hdd/
DaHood, this is because you didn't adjust your /etc/fstab before rebooting without the hardware attached
DaHood, basically.. whatever you removed was set to automagically mount... and when it was not found the system was allowing you to login to fix the error
THEN mount -t auto /dev/sdb1 /mnt/linuxextra (if you made that mount point earlier like I mentioned)
Ok these weird things are showing
you normally see the issue when a fsck fails to automagically run
ok details please, SAM_theman .. pastebin
daMaestro, probably you are right. but how could i edit it since it mounted the system in read-only mode?
DaHood, in your case.. you need to edit /etc/fstab and comment or remove the entries that refer to the device you are attempting to remove
DaHood, you would just login and remout it
DaHood, mount -o re,remount /
ok one sec
damnit
DaHood, mount -o rw,remount /
whats strange about that
its clear english
giving you information
everything worked fine
When i dont have a disc in the drive, and i click on the drive in Computer, it tell me there is no media, but when there is a disc in the drive, and i double click on it, nothing happens, the icon is still there but nothing happens when i click it
o
now do this:
:-d
then mke2fs -j /dev/sdb1
THEN mount -t auto /dev/sdb1 /mnt/linuxextra (if you made that mount point earlier like I mentioned)
daMaestro, ah i thought i wouldn't be able to remount it. I should have tried, but there was the panic that hold me back
the first will make a journalling ext3 partition out of /dev/sdb1
the 2nd will mount it
daMaestro, thanks a lot
oops you did that already
duh
DaHood, sure
i made a very very bad decision today
If this doesn't work....
Allha
ext3 is a journal filesystem
so ext2
ext3 == ext2 + journal
ext2 = ext3 - journal
i should not have plugged in the 30 inch wide screen monitor that was meant for a permanent display somewhere else... just to test it.. on my desk
why not?
now you like it too much to give it up?
or .. it exploded.. ?
WebDragon, ding
heheh
|DrJef|, 2560x1600 2560x1600 2560x1600
zcat, 30inch ?
I sympathize -- I picked up a 22" 1680x1050 display a few months back and cannot live without it either
Samsung ?
I have a 22 widescreen
So any of you smarty pants, know why i need to mount my dvds as root to access it? Why cant gnome do it?
Acer AL2223W
ahh the sliver one?
not a single dead or stuck pixel either
lol it took me some time to get used to going back to a laptop myself.... I gave my big screen lcd to my daughter
well, a 30" is a little too heavy to get off the desk isn't it?
actually it's more of a gunmetal silver
hehe me either
what is the command to see the bios version?
dark
yeah I seen it
dmidecode, DaHood
gnome-mount -d /dev/dvd ?
AndyCap, lighter than the 21 inch crt it replaced :-
WebDragon, widescreen?
yeah
ssshh..
24" Dell here. but the 30" isn't that much more tempting. i could see if i was doing scientific visualization like |DrJef| ... then i could use the extra resolution, but 1920x1200 is good nuff (for 1080p)
AndyCap, i havent tried that, but it doesnt work from Computer
WebDragon, thanks
only bitch was having to track down the h/v sync values by hand in a world that doesn't have these values anywhere on the spec sheets
zcat, i just like having a desktop...the size of my...desktop
whoa 24" heh I only thought I had a big screen lcd
WebDragon, it worked
zcat, more room for lots of small data plotting windows
because Acer seems to think that in a world with auto detection no one will ever need to know those values
well, you don't really need the anymore in the world of LVD's
thx
You dont need to worry about sync values if your screen supports EDID
LCD's.
except when it doesn't work
now let me see if I can install f7
Services
so must be some really el-cheap-o screen
no DVI cable, only VGA and FC5 wouldn't autodetect the settings for it
still. ctf 1680 1050 60
DVI
I had to find out this shit manually crammed into a 640x480 space
I have DVI on fedora has no problem
yeah but I have no DVI PORTS on the computer
or ctf -r for reduced blanking
don't see the diffrence..
it still looks like crap to me
:-D
heh
dvi-vga , cga=dvi
sorry. cvt is the utilit
*vga
bbl
trust me I went through HOURS of diagnostics attempts before realizing that nothing short of divine intervention would have made it work automatically
GionnyBoss, autofs is running
not saying automatically. Saying without specs.
finally managed to find someone with a similar display and resolution and got his h/v values from him and then it worked
I'm hoping F7 does a better job so I don't have to go through that again
ancient Asus V7M-266 mobo with built-in GeForce2 MX chipset and nothing extra
cruiseoveride, I don't know then... I'm sorry. I hope someone else will know. Good luck
f7 has a much better feel to it
not even PCI-e
is F8 coming out pretty soon ?
GionnyBoss, thanks anyway
so you are probably right to assume so
lol
september?
I forget -- check the website for details
somehow I doubt you'll have much better luck with F7. :P perhaps nouveau driver.
cruiseoveride, your welcome
dunno -- but I got 'em written down this time
but lcd's are much easier than crt's
they still aren't perfect -- I wish I could get ahold of Acer and get the real values
the next display i buy will either be a 1cm thick OLED display, or some kind of VR headset.)
true, I'll give you that
VR headset with Compiz
shake your head and all the windows wobble
