i understand

i have no wireless issues with the new kernel

i am as well on this laptop

-cR: command not found???

"command not found?" A: Run the command AS ROOT after switching users with "su --login" or "su -" in order to get root's command PATH so the command WILL be found; don't run "su" by itself. If it's still not found, then either it's not installed in a standard path location (echo $PATH), is not executable (chmod a+x), is in your current dir (./runme), or you've spelled it incorrectly.

why is bash messed up

cause the person typing the command is

granted i need wireless first

tw2113, kmod-madwifi hasnt been updated yet

i used my Debian server with root on and it only crashed due to the bugs in Debian

i prefer landline broadband anyway

so two questions, I'm still confused about, I burned the fedora livecd on friday I think
its 2.6.21-1.3194

ok

and the kmod is -madwifi-0.9.3.1-1.2.6.21_1.3228.fc7
so how do you read that and see its older than my kernel?

install media doesnt get updated during the lifespan of a release
no its newer

ok
thats what I thought
and if I update to that newer kernel?
that wont fix my issues?

but if you update you will have the 2.6.22.1-27.fc7 kernel

and I cant force it to go to 3228?

nope
its been removed from the updates mirror

general information question, what is the significance of /dev/null?

ok so my gameplan should be to periodically run what to check if madwifi is updated?

yes

Is making heavy use of NTFS for file storage where permissions are not neccessary under linux a bad idea?

dev null is the black void
when you dont care about the output

k

which command will help me check?
rpm -q kmod-madwifi

nope yum provides kmod-madwifi

for a good laugh, go here http://uncyclopedia.org/wiki/Linux

then when it shows up do a yum update

so yum check-update package till its updated
then do a yum update

no

yum info

yum provides kmod-madwifi

right, and I need to check the version on it until it matches the new 27 kernel
could be tomorrow, or a week from now right?

yep
it will be the next couple of days

know anyone I can bribe that to the top of the list?

since the new kernel came out on saturday the maintainer was proable off for the weekend

thanks VileGent, appreciated your help, cheers.

he's not so vile when you be patient with him, is he
darn, spoke too late

nothing is working
tutorials arent working, manuals are too complex
webmin was my last hope but that wont work

Hey guys, what goin on in this channel?

nothing

Wow,

anyone know how to change mass permissions

for a directory?

that include subfiles and subdirectories of a folder'

chmod -r
or -R
...

k
-R: command not found

chmod -cR octal /path

chmod -R

tried both

meoblast001, as su -

im always root
it lets me configure things

not just -R as - flags command options

then you have something majorly messed

You login as root?

yes
and yes i use it as an option for chmod
[root@localhost ~]# chmod -R 777 /var/www/html/
-R: command not found

Your GUI isn't root though...

dang it

right?
only console/

was at the beginning

?

yes my GUI is
i know how to get it to do that
learned that from Debian

your GUI is... root? or not root?
I prefer directness, sorry.

root
and no it didnt work

You shouldn't do that

it acted like it did but the permissions are still set to root

Oh, and rhuckle wants back in...
he flooded the channel yesterday, misunderstanding an instruction pointing him to a pastebin

so do you want to change permissions of ownership
who banned him

yes

or ownership

all subfiles and directories to a regular user
ownership

man chown

http://sfw.7chan.org/tech/src/118387784494.jpg ?

/var/www/html/ do the trick??

manpage and GUI for permissions

boxxertrumps, it can come in the channel just cannot post

oh ok..

and i will not unban untill i can check his mask

Sure
that makes sense

tell him to com in the channel

i'm practicing with yum tonight

He's coming
You need to practice with Yum?

yes

not used to the system?

i'm working on my CLI stuff
i could always go use the gui, but nah

CLI is much more powerfull

cli is where the power is

sweet, even managed to fix a problem i was having with libx264 stuff

2) rhuckle:  [INFO]    Channel view for \u201c#fedora\u201d
[INFO]    You are banned from this channel.
thats what he gets

gui's are for launching eterms you can get real work done on the command line

have him PM me

ok

earlier someone mentioned doing a listing of available yum packages, i started browsing them, googling for more info, and found a cool book program

boxxertrumps, he is unbanned

Thanks.

anyone here a self proclaimed samba expert ? :P

thinkmassive i think like me should be in the bed

group no

how can you enable vi syntax highlighting.

_NoX_, whats gaim

_NoX_, no gain no longer exist

true

anyone know why my samba will let me share all my folders .. except all folders under /home ????

pid= yeah

selinux?

or simple file permissions

how should perms be set ?

it worked

Is there a graphical tool to configure compiz. I have used gconf-editor in ubuntu feisty. WHats the equivalent here in fedora 7

tommorrow night ill learn mediawiki language goodnight

bogor:: fusion-icon ?

Thank you i will try that

bogor gconf-editor

bogor:: np! thats what i use for my compiz-fusion anyway

VilleGent:: i made a google search on that & found none for f7. will try a yum search & get back. Thank you

bogor, try yum provides

you mean "yum provides gconf-editor". Thats new

bbs

what does provides do?

has anyone here been able to share their /home with samba?

Bad idea

because i think its a fedora issue!!! :P

dc905, I have, y?

What user is samba shown as?

boxxertrumps, man yum

for permissions and stuff

dc905, selinux

daMaestro:: selinux is permissive with samba allowed .. what am i missing
klingon:: did u have to do something special to permit /home ?

daMaestro, i asked him the same thing 12 minutes ago

well, i'm not really paying attention.. sorry.

he didnt answer me

daMaestro:: np , i didnt answer him :P
lol

oh i see...
provides is usefull

dc905, oddly I didnt even have an entry for it in my samba conf. but I provided my users credentials when browsing another folder that I did have shared and somehow my home showed up as well

dc905, your samba config would be good in helping us help you
dc905, something like *What* is failing would be good

http://pastebin.com/m5dfe7af

**shudder**

when i change path to /home/ samba will still show the share .. but when i click 'folder not found' is returned
works fine for all other folders other than /home
i therfor do not belive issue is samba but fedora config

dc905, sorry i dont use samba

VileGent:: lol, ok, thanks for your help.. on to the guys that do :P
VileGent:: lol, ok, thanks for your help.. on to the guys that do :P

dc905, use rafb.net please because pastebin.com is slow and has ads

dc905, well... i don't think it's samba.. i think it's fs permissions
assuming you really have delt with selinux
dc905, ll /home

http://rafb.net/p/MS79hj78.html
3

well.. there is your issue

ohh.. should be root ?/

unless you are connecting with a samba user mapped to dc905... it wont be able to list the directory

niice!! :P
so just chown it ?

you have defined share based settings... which means access on FS is as the user samba is running as
well.... that is not exactly the most secure way to go about it

daMaestro:: im all ears

the better way is to create a samba user that is mapped to your local user account and use user level security
i don't know if this is what you really want, but it is much more secure
otherwise you need to minimally set mode 701 on your home folder

daMaestro:: i think its what i should do, but i dont know how to exactly :P
because all i want is to share my folders under /home --- nothing else

/home is different then /home/dc905

daMaestro:: then, i want to share whats under /home/dc905

well this samba config doesn't look to be generated by s-c-samba... so i would recommend trying system-config-samba
you might need to yum install it

daMaestro:: got it.. ill try that out

i would personally move to using user level security; it's just better
then you don't have to open up your /home/dc905 to all local users
and you still have a somewhat private home dir

daMaestro:: i want my home dir totally open to my network

dc905, to all users
or just you

yup.. all users and guest!
lol .. why ? its for my movies -- then my whole house can access them :P

dc905, i can't help with such a setup ... it makes my stomach hurt
lol
yea, you can still achieve that without opening up your user's home folder

then make another folder and share that

i'm not going to try to talk you out of it, do what you want with the technology; just know that what you are wanting to do, i would never personally do
but forget me, i dream about SELinux
lol

daMaestro:: im hear to learn.. what would you do ?

'lo

dc905, on an ittybitty lan - use simple share level security. i do.
udc905, on an ittybitty lan - use simple share level security. i do./u

is there anyone here that can help me with ndiswrapper?

i would personally share some random directory location '/srv/samba' and then just symlink to that directory from my home for easy access to my media

daMaestro, /media is already wide open in is config
his

yeah.. i know
i just don't do this kinda stuff with samba

i've installed ndiswrapper allready, and i got the bcm43xx drive blacklisted.

i don't trust my member windows machines on any network
lol

dimensionerror, which broadcom chipset

4311

your screwed

daMaestro:: so think i should un-install. then re-install or can i just fix my perm/owner issue with my conf ?

nope

dc905, here's my dumb-simple config sharing a couple media dirs: http://rafb.net/p/LeSLjt15.html
dc905, it should 'just work'

dc905, i'm afraid i am fundamentally unable to help you ;-)

i've used this card with ndiswrapper in another distro. why wont this one work?

daMaestro:: im gonna do it your way man !!! lol

dc905, (only thing i really diff in my config is "vfs objects = audit" which logs to messages)

daMaestro:: told you i wanna learn -- even if its not the way im gonna leave it.. lol

i'd go with what zcat is recommending

zcat:: k, ill try :p

i cant get me 4318 working

VileGent, still?
VileGent, hmm... i'm using mine right now
dimensionerror, /sbin/lsmod|grep ndis

ndiswrapper 173084 0

how long does it take to crack a 5 digit password?

daMaestro, battleaxe is useing that lappy now
boxxertrumps, about 3 hours

dimensionerror, dmesg|grep wlan

boxxertrumps, 5 ^32

A-Z*

nothing

dimensionerror, ndiswrapper -l

5^57

driver installed
311) present (alternate driver:

zcat:: ok.. using your .conf modified for my system.. now how do i make it work?? :Ppppppppppp

dimensionerror, ndiswrapper -ma

/etc/modprobe.conf

dimensionerror, btw.. is this f7?
dimensionerror, uname -r
uname -a

how would i figure out how many combinations are from 0 to a certain number/letter combination?

f7
http://rafb.net/p/kKUPCy96.html

5^57 is all possible combos

from 'dmesg|grep ndiswrapper'
uname - gives "2.6.22.1-27.fc7
"

No, i just need to figuer out a proper amount of tries before access to my remote desktop server is denied

boxxertrumps, 3
lol

Ok.

zcat:: ??

yum provides denyhosts

dimensionerror, well... have you tried a different driver for your device? or is this known working?

i got the windows driver from the hp website
the bcm43xx doesnt work.... doesnt even show up in ifconfig

dc905, change settings that makes sense, and open your workstation firewall for it.

311 is my wireless

dimensionerror, ifconfig wlan0 up

What can I add to the command to make a certain program under wine open in a virtual desktop?

unknown interface: No such device
No such device

sorry dimensionerror

zcat:: ya.. but i gotta do something with permissions or how samba is installed to access my /home/dc905

dimensionerror, try rebooting to reapply the modprobe

dc, just put the files in an unrestriced folder in / and share that.

bee back...

dc905, chmod 701 /home /home/user
dc905, you need the +x if you're going to put a webserver docroot in there too

when configuring samba for just your home directory just use user authentication
why won't alias ls='ls -F' work on Fedora
in you ~/.bashrc of course

what does it mean "statically linked against glibc 2.2.5"? mysql rpm download options are statically linked and dynamically

cool - Dubai finally finished the world's tallest building. (wonder how many dumbass americans are thinking "oh yeah?! we shud blo it up reel gude!")
boxxertrumps, the red one

Is the tallest building really worth the money and effort?
NO the red ones are all ATI and i have horrible luck with the drivers...

MSI cards are red as well.

i picked a random color - to be accurate, the green one

Most Nvidia ones are green..
What about a number?
(MSI?)

boxxertrumps, nothing uses direct10 yet, and it's slow, so don't waste your money on lowend 8xxx cards. get a dx9 7900, or the highend 8800

My 7950 works.

BECAUSE dx REALLY MATTERS WHEN USING LINUX.
oops caps
all i need is a card that supports openGL

eh, most cards are completely built around direct x anyway

boxxertrumps, well, if you're going to spend that much on a videocard i'd assume you multiboot once in a while for games. i play BF2 every so often.
and, erm, googleearth is fast in linux?

I wil be multibooting once i get a new HDD

thats some good cash.

I make more helping people off campus (not in california)
but a lot of people in the lab need individualized attention and they like someone whos patient
I even get people who ask me to write code for their assignments

zcat, i have ~600 in a student account at... ~2%
cant find the exact rate

boxxertrumps, your bank should at least have a money market account that gets a much better rate

I'm just using a student accout right now...
i'll ask the next time i'm at the BMO

downhillgames, how can i learn disc spaces of in /home/xxx ?

clox, run "baobab"

zcat, what is it ?

clox, a guess at an answer since your question sucks

clox; df -ha
says all the stuffs on your disk in human readable form
or use the "Disk Space Analyzer" app

- /home is 7.9G
i deleted some files but still it hasnt been empty

clox; did you use "rm" to remove them?
or did you use the GUI?

i used Gui

and you emptied the trash, right? :P

alex[slx]:: what have i done? :P

where can I find a good tutorial for setting up a fedora linux VPN server (preferably OpenVPN)

alex[slx], system-config-network can do openvpn connections can't it?

question. How long do you think it shoudl take to copy a partition using "dd" around 400gb from one drive to another. Firewire, IDE and Sata? Does anyone know?
mostly music sample files which will probably look like data anyhow

is disabling requiretty in soduers unsafe?

E-mu, about 400/.05/3600 hours. "kill -USR1 $(pidof dd)" if you want to see xfer status.

IPSec is there

3600 hours?
wait 400 divied by .05 divied by 3600?

I want to set up a VPN between multiple computers (all on separate connections)
for the game starcraft

I am trying to set up freeradius and authenticate through PAM, but running freeradius as radiusd makes my PAM authentication fail unless I run the service as root. Any workaround for this without having to run radius with root?

alex[slx], check out hamachi

ok

yikes GHhost sais 10 hours?
but that with two firewire drives
does it matter if its firewire or sata? Difference in time?

someone help please?
I need to make a script run a command from a host, the user is the the one accessing the web. I need to run the command as a root using sudo. I already added www-data ALL = NOPASSWD ....
in sudoers but it still asks for a apssword
anyone can help me please?

I don't know how to make it do that - but letting www-data sudo to root is a really bad idea
What do you need to do from a web request that requires root priveleges?

I'm running a script, only a particukar as a root.
I need to run this script.

yeah, but what does this script do?
can't you set the script setuid root?

It runs another application, and the application returns a data that the script needs.

and why does that other application require root privileges?

I installed it

I have no idea, thats the instruction I jave.

did everything it said to

have

but it fails when I try to log in

alex[slx], don't ask me - use their forums. it worked for me when i tested it a year ago

well, I'd look into a) why it requires root, b) setuid root

if someone where to choose between Norton GHost 12 and Acronis True image what would you choose serioulsy? I just encountered a newsgroup thread all saying that ACronis is far superior over NG because its less of a HOG on resources and somehting about BIts and WHite spaces plus its linix based
and takes about half the time to image hosting and restore which I find hard to believe?

Thanks I look into them!

I also read that ghost is a borrowed technology not orignally Symantecs R&D and that newer versions have technology based on the acquired Powerquest Drive Image
then again this a thread on the Acronis forum so I bet its bias

quick reminder, how do i code a dropdown box which is databinded?
it doesn't seem to have it's data loaded by page_load

feel free to give no context whatsoever

hi trying to get vmware 6 64bit, on f7 64bit with kernel-2.6.22.1-27.fc7, installed,any-any-update or /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl doesnt seem to help anyone have a idea?

InsomniaCity, i'm setting the SelectedValue of a databinded compotent
it doesn't accept any selected values during Page_load

still needs more context

InsomniaCity, http://rafb.net/p/boVCpS91.html
line 41, fails
pagestatus is a databinded dropdown compotent

so the context I was looking for is "asp.net"

InsomniaCity, dude
sorry
wrong chatroom

that was my next thought

InsomniaCity, dam asp.net
InsomniaCity, i hate it, but i have to use it for a project

I've used c# plenty, but not asp.net
not done databinding either... but check the values of pageStatus at that point

is there anyway to use disk druid after installing fedora?
i've tried gpated, gtparted, and you can't use any of them to create a software raid partition like you can in disk druid

anyone her have any knowledge of what fedora does when USB devices are plugged in? I'm trying to get these Samsing USB monitors to work, and they're okay on Feisty, but on Ubuntu libusb claims they're in use, and I can't see why

system-config-lvm

goes to linux box

s/Ubuntu/Fedora/ obviously
doh
too little coffee for monday morning

Did you watch the log as you plugged it in?

yes
very little difference between the two machines

hmm i don't have system-config-lvm. which package is it in?

system-config-lvm

a usb monitor? they make those? crappy bandwidth

lol

there's a USB drive built in the monitor that the FC machine mounts that the ubuntu one doesn't but I can't see why tghat would make it a pain
good enough for HDTV
the monitors are from Samsugn and LG, the chip is by a company called display link

anyone her have any knowledge of what fedora does when USB devices are plugged in -- install the HAL hardware monitor

I've been writing an X11 driver for them

Did you try turning up the udev logging high enough to see what it's doing?

HAL Device Manager 0.5.9

no, my knowledge of linux USB is very little. I'll look into these, many thanks
http://www.ndiyo.org/news/samsunghubster/

You use udevcontrol for that.

thank you

umount -t /dev/usb1 /home/usb

or whatever directory u want

okay

i.e. /dev/usb replace with actual device name

Hrm. That might be nice for use with e.g., the decTOP.
Now all we need is a display with a low-enough power consumption to make them single-cable only :P

indeed

mdales, neat. hadn't seen that before.

they're just out
samsung ones are hard to get still
not sure LG has hit the shelves yet
IO GEAR do a USB-VGA dongle
similar stuff

There's a SiS one that already has a xorg driver.

clearly not going to be any good for gaming
right. that'll not be based on teh display link chipset though
which is what I'm targetting
the more the merrier
that's for the best probably

What would be nice is to have the input devices linked to the display in xorg automagically.

we're working on that too, though that's not what I'm doing at the moment
oooh
loads of output now
in /var/log/messages

ok, i have tried system-config-lvm. That's great for LVM, i can use it for that thanks. However, it cannot create the 'software raid partition' that you can creat in Disk Druid
it puzzles me why disk druid would only be part of the linux install process and can't be used from within linux itself

DaManJ, nope, it can't, and using system-config-lvm WITH s/w raid is dangerous.

so how do i create software raid partitions then from within linux?
I've got another 500 gb drive here and i want to grow my raid system. I've got a raid 5 array with LVM sitting on top.

DaManJ, manually, with mdadm, after you've created the 0xFD flagged partitions

what are 0xFD flagged partitions?
yep, that is what i was intending to do, use mdadm manually, but i didn't know how to create the software raid partition first

does RAID work on a partition basis?

well in Disk Druid, what you do, is first, assign a 'software raid' partition to each drive you want in the raid array
then you click the 'Raid' button, and then you can select from those drives marked 'software raid' and create a raid array
once the array is set up, you get a md0. And then you can put LVM or another file system on top
so what i'm trying to figure out is how do i go about creating one of those 'software raid' partitions. but from zcat's silence i guess he wants me to go google it

DaManJ, 0xfd is just the partition type. one large 500GB partition.

could i do that through gparted?

if I pull a software raid drive, and try to mount that partition elsewhere, as a normal drive, will it work?

yes, you can move software raid arrays between machines
i.e. you'd need to move all disks in the array to a new box

DaManJ, yes, but if you have to ask about the simplest step, then I'm guessing you'll run into trouble when you get to --growing your raid5 and then resizing your lvm and filesystems.

no, I meant, can I take one of the drives and use it somewhere else?

InsomniaCity, only if it's raid1

hmm.

don't worry about me zcat, i've got help http://scotgate.org/?p=107

ah yes, I forgot to mention it would be

unfortunately it doesn't tell me how to format to that type

ok, and if I was using RAID 1, and I got some flipped bits on one of two drives, how does it know which is correct?

ext2, ext3, fat16, fat32, jfs, linux-swap, ntfs, and xfs. I do not see any '0xfd' partition type
are you sure this is an actual partition you want me to create?

guys is anybody using KDE on fedora and know how to add the searchbox into konqueror? I keep forgetting on how to do this simple thing
i am about to reformat and reinstall and since i need that, i have to put it back

filesystem - unknown. Flags: boot, raid.

DaManJ, raid flag. same thing.

hmm, well unfortunately, i cannot set a flag in gparted unless there is a partition on it first. The option is greyed out

DaManJ, i'm sure it's doable in gparted, i just don't use it that often. still prefer fdisk and parted.

oh actually not to worry. i just had to press apply :*(
woohoo, raid flag set!
thanks for the help zcat
now i will follow the web page instructions. fingers crossed :P

ok, and if I was using RAID 1, and I got some flipped bits on one of two drives, how does it know which is correct?

RAID 1 doesn't have any parity bits.
Oh, you mean you broke them.
The set, rather.

hypothetical question, but yeah

That I do not know.

I figure it'd be just whichever drive got there first
s/got there first/got scheduled for the read/

InsomniaCity, well, if you're doing an intentional split mirror, you fail & remove the one that's your "backup", and when you re-add it, it gets synced up.

nah, this time I was just wondering what happened if it started writing the wrong stuff

woohoo, reshaping in progress. Will take approx 700 mins at 117664 kb/s
3 TB storage server on it's way
got to tell you, i'm loving linux. Got some really awesome features in the last yr or so.

yeah
like kexec()

this software raid is great, and performs just as good as top of the line hardware raid cards that cost thousands
and i can move my raid array to any machine i want. it's great

hehe
i have my doubts about the performance, but yeah, it's fine

read some recent review. software is outperforming all but the best hardware raid cards
the thing is, the chips on raid cards aren't that fast - 200-400 mhz. Ur cpu is heaps faster
but if you want performance out of software raid, you obviously don't want the machine doing much else
i built a system specifically for it so i'm good

except that s/w hotswapping isn't as foolproof, and that's usually very important, so you'd go for h/w raid with it's trays and blinken lights
s/it's/its/

Hi, how can I downgrade fedora kernel ?

download an old kernel rpm, rpm -e the new one, and rpm -i the old one

No.
Use --oldpackage.

oh. didn't know about that switch

Rather than erasing, that is.

thanx, now I try

hey, i cant startup with CD on my old pc, how can i make a so my CD can boot from my floppy?

o_O

Yep but I've got a new motherboard with AHCI controllers and with linux kernel 2.6.19+ it is hotswap compatible. "AHCI is fully supported in Microsoft Windows Vista and the fedora linux operating system from kernel 2.6.19"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Host_Controller_Interface
and yes hot swap works fine for me. In fact I have a 4 port sata backplane so I have 4 hot swappable drive bays

DaManJ, you still have to map sdX to the right tray. a monkey needs a blinken light.
