well i get going, thanks for all the help!
unknown @ 1600x1200 (32 bpp) so basically i had that same issue very rarely on deb/ubuntu and what i use to do was update-pciids is there something similar in fedora?
morning.....
hi everyone
anyone skilled in usermode linux ?

thanks ... this is about the page in fedorasolved almost everything went ok but the virtual networking thing

what is the --nodeps equivalent in yum?
how to for yum to install a package by ignoring dependencies
how to force*
the program is not meant to do stupid things.
heh
it seems to me that whenever I've done stuff manually forcing it to ignore depenancies
it was almost always a stupid choice
it is
Anvil, i am not stupid, i am trying to fix a BUG in packaging of nautilus-sendto dependency
yum automatically resolves dependencies, why would you want it not to? Remember yum is a layer on top of yum, just like modprobe on top of insmod and rmmod. If you want to install without dependencies then use rpm.
"layer on top of rpm"
oh yeah. Sorry for the typo
mikerose357, no
mikerose357, i use it only in smart actions
mikerose357, it's like a knife, can you say using a knife is stupid?
What are you exactly trying to do?
AAAH, yum crashes!! http://pastebin.com/m794ebcf6
by mistake i have installed packages from a repository replacing other packages from base repositories
so how can i undo that?
if i do that without --nodeps
Use yum remove to remove the package. Then disable the repo and then yum install.
So then report the bug.
then i would have to remove 1000 packages!!!
can't you just remove the new repository and run yum update?
so i used rpm -ev --nodeps
aye aye sir.
then yum instal ...
but does anyone see a quick solution?
-U --oldpackage --replacepkgs ?
berzerka, it would not do anything
Anvil, rpm or yum?
rpm
Anvil, anyway rpm will not automate downloading of packages
what i did is 100% correct :P
and it helped me alot
no it's not, you've breaking - even temporary - your system.
anything could have happened.
and i never use --nodeps or stupid things in stupid purposes
i use it for smart purposes only :P
whatever.
there's no smart purpose for nodeps.
anyone uses xchat here?
:P
there is

hi all
wow if you get the chance to goto Cancun go! It really really nice.
sorry OT but had to share.
anyone know of a deamon to use i8kfan or background process i can use other than gkrellm to turn the fans on my laptop on and off using i8kfan?
Hi all. Is there an easy way to use yum to get the .src.rpm for a package?
the source for what package?
i just find the individual rpm from livna or something
the livna website , not the repo
yumdownloader --source foo.src.rpm
thanks delhage.
how do I make a process in xinet.d start when the system starts?
/etc/xinet.d/svn
chkconfig svn on
CuriosCat, do you kn ow if it's supposed to be svn or svnserve?
I would expect svn if that's what the script is called in /etc/xinetd.d/
however, I don't use SVN myself, so couldn't tell you for sure.
Simply start the xinet service. chkconfig if for standalone servers.
Sorry that the xinetd service.
so, can you explain it to a noob?
No, you also have to use chkconfig for on-demand services.
And then reload the xinetd service if you want changes to take effect immediately.
chkconfig copies the Start/Kill Script from /etc/init.d to /etc/rcX.d, where X is the runlevel. Xinetd is one of these standalone services, but it allows you to dynamically add and start servers.
Ie you dont have to start/restart a service when it's in xinetd, when changes to the conf is made, as you would when it's a standalone server.
You still have to tell xinetd to allow it though, via chkconfig.
ok... xinetd is in one chkconfig --list but not the other
so, chkconfig --add xinetd
??
No. Install it.
You have to install xinetd. Then simply chkconfig --add xinetd, then chkconfig xinetd on, then service xinetd start
You don't need --add.
thanks
berzerka, so you use xchat .. have you ever used sysinfo script ?
now I guesss I'll see if installing xinetd is going to make subversion load
LycanNyc-work: no, sorry
berzerka, u should try 1
LycanNyc-work: Why? Most people already know what hardware they own.
LycanNyc-work: hmm i would if you tell me how what can i do with it? get the information under /proc shown in xchat?
berzerka, sure
berzerka, u want a link ?
LycanNyc-work: yes, please
berzerka, just 1 sec
jep
i am a newbie how can i install xephem from cli
yum says its not in the list
berzerka, http://www.sendspace.com/file/f11p4j
try yum search whatever it is you want
ok
load script .. load it up and go into #easylinuxguide and type /sysinfo to see how it show sup.. dont do it here just incase anyone will get mad
LycanNyc-work: thank you. being basically paranoid, i have to check against the script first, of course
its reading from repository metadata in from local files
and says No Matches found
i have downloaded xephem.tar.gz file
Then Fedora doesn't package it.
berzerka, no prob
how can i install it
xephem used to be shareware.
oh
there is debian package for celestine i have installed it
its a space odessy simulation , any such rpm in Fedora ?
LycanNyc-work: okay, looks clean to me
berzerka, it is
at least i dont know what the script contains but its from xchat.org and its for sysinfo only
LycanNyc-work: oh, pretty nice indeed. i especially like the virtual penis part
when you resize a logical volume which contains /, you don't need to reboot, or do you?
berzerka, hehe
berzerka, so where did u test it yet
LycanNyc-work: in a private channel on freenode where i hang out with my pals..
berzerka, what did show up for screen ?
LycanNyc-work: i don't think it would bother someone if i did it here (well, there is always someone..), because it is a one-liner

yyep there u go
that unknown is whats ticking me off
only happens in fedora though
in other distros i prob got it once or twice and my friend had told me to do update-pciids.. i found that on fedora did it but nothing changed
btw, why is the kernel suffixed .fc7 ? i thought the 'core' was dropped with release 7?
all of them are?
RobNyc-work: oh, well... then never mind. just because the release is now always called f7 instead of fc6.
yeah true
so try doing update-pciids see if it chances anything
RobNyc-work: nope, still unknown. i also get "mv: `/usr/share/hwdata/.neww' and `/usr/share/hwdata/.neww' are the same file" if that is interesting...
me2
maybe i should erase it and then do it again ?
RobNyc-work: hmm i think i will rather look into the update-pciids script and check what should happen at that point..
hi all
the sha1sum of my F7 ppc iso does not match. Is it perhaps possible to use rsync to fix that? If so, anyone know how?
If you can find a rsync source for the iso, sure.
hello all
good one
BitTorrent is also another good option.
Now he's going to ask you to find him one.
excellent suggestions. thanks
I know my way to the mirror page
loopback mount it, copy the contents out, rsync that.
then just do network installs. Why would you ever bother with the .iso anyway?
low on hd space so I burn the iso
let me know
451 4.0.0 /etc/mail/sendmail.cf: line 91: fileclass: cannot open '/etc/mail/local-host-names': World writable directory , failed
any fix for that?
running low on disk space is God's way of telling you to buy more computers
yeah, read the damn message. -_-

What about the other 2 parts of that pathname?
i erase the /.new and still shows mv: `/usr/share/hwdata/.neww' and `/usr/share/hwdata/.neww' are the same file

ivazquez, similar errors for other files there

Anvil, ivazquez thnx
got work to finish before living.
are you experienced with sendmail?
if you have no particular reason for using it, I'd recommend that you just get rid of it. Install something more sensible instead.
dwmw2, experienced is too much, i'm using it sometimes
you may do better with Exim.
or even postfix
dwmw2, thnx, i'll think about it
morning...
guess what.
RobNyc-work: i copied the latest pci.ids by hand (using the information from the script), "unknown" remains
RobNyc-work: will look later into why the script seems not to work correctly..
is not the script is fedora
i do it in all other distros and work fine
RobNyc-work: hmm lets take a look....
robnyc-work: were you the one with the mx4000 that was having trouble with graphics or something the other day?
yes yesterday
96xx driver installed running fine but no 3d desktop effects
RobNyc-work; i have a link for you, hang on
blame nvidia for not releasing open source drivers nor giving specs.
RobNyc-work: that box I have with the mx440, figured out that the HD was dying, working on fixing that now

ok... do you or don't you want Beryl/Compiz Fusion to run on your box?
Uh oh... updatedb seems to be broken in the latest kernel build
1' failed.
updatedb has nothing to do with kernel, and this has happened before.
Sparks; works for me
Someone else was having this problem and found it worked on the older kernel with no problems. I'm not physically at my box so I can't test that right now.
could edit grub.conf and send a reboot :P
True... Hmmmm...
hi downhillgames
hi guzu. yesterday a guy with 64MB of RAM couldn't install FC5-7. does that supposed rule apply for 5 and 6 as well as 7?
he didn't know the error, but i found it funny
downhillgames, i don't remember, but i suppose this info it's written in the release notes
guzu; hey, i just woke up... but yeah.
ionly know that i could not install fc6 with 128 mb
what kernel version is having trouble with updatedb? I've got a box here i can test with
4 hours of sleep, joy
nice
guzu; http://masterdownhillgames.blogspot.com/atom.xml --not nice :/
RobNyc-work: hey Rob, i solved the fedora issue
can I install the kervel-2.6.21-1.3228.fc7 by yum?
from a repo...
no, but you can install that version kernel
downhillgames, that reminds me of bob dylan
guzu; what's that?
downhillgames, when you got nothing, you got nothing to loose
w0rd
how
RobNyc-work: thing is that the lspci executable is located in /sbin, which is per default NOT in the user's PATH. just add it to your environment, and it works
thinking about moving out of the country now, guzu
how
why not? heh
downhillgames, why?
yeah, and go where?
i live ~5hrs from canada :P
RobNyc-work: hehe, edit .bashrc or .bash_profile and add the line "export PATH=/sbin:$PATH"
downhillgames, oh, good
RobNyc-work: then re-login or start a new shell depending on where you put it and it will run
RobNyc-work: then re-login or start a new shell depending on where you put it and it will run

RobNyc-work: now i need a chocolate bar or something, haven't eaten today... brb
When I switch to the previous kernel updatedb works. What gives?
anybody installed/used mon or nagios?
hehe
-2; it's still shaking the walls :/
could still be an updatedb bug.
with or without the "
RobNyc-work: without
and after adding tha tline ?
nagios
oh
relogin lol
True
whatz happening?
doesnt work for me yet
downhillgames, what case is that? http://img407.imageshack.us/img407/2042/dscf1569hm1.jpg
RobNyc-work: i mean the login session. press the logout button in x or whatever, and restart your whole session. (or just set the environment variable for some running bash session and run xchat again from there, but then the change will only be for that one bash session)
RobNyc-work: clear?
RobNyc-work: if not, ask
i did
do that and didnt fix it
can't be
where does the expoert PATh line goes at though
exactly ?
at the end of your .bashrc (for now..)
then open up a new console and run xchat from there (by typing xchat& e.g.)
i thought u said bash_profile
i said bashrc or bash_profile, it will both work, but the definitions in _profile are only evaluated for login shells, that means you have to log out and in completely, not just start a new shell
i know i did so too
are you using the bash shell?
screen still unknown
ajaaya - so you've used nagios.. how do you like it, pros/cons/etc...
im on ssh but i logged out too
but the pc is right next to me
so i have 2 ways
okay, you have the pc right of you. now do the following:
yeah
1. put the line (without ") "export PATH=/sbin:$PATH" at the very end of your $HOME/.bash_profile
as root or user
as user! this is the user's file, you may of course edit it.
wouldn't really matter if you did it as root though
2. close all x applications, log out of X to get a login screen
3. log in
root is not working so im gonna try user since its for user settings
how do I make cp not ask me if it want's to overwrite every single file?
-f
berzerka, I tried that, I used -Rf but it still asks me
Can anybody tell me of a media player that will play mp3's on fedora 7? I've tried Zinf and Amarok and neither will function. If you're not aware of one, are you aware of a freeware app that will allow for me to convert them to fedora linux format?
oh sorry
videolan
berzerka, any other ideas?
look in your .bashrc or .profile or in /etc/profile. there is an alias defined from cp to cp -i. remove the alias or the -i.
yeppie
works great now
nice

okay guys, i have to leave to a colleague to give some perl lessons have a nice evening!
Is there a way to speed up yum's dependency resolution process when installing many packages in one go?
there is a yum-fastestmirror plugin for yum
yum list yum-fastestmirror
Download speeds aren't my problem, so fastestmirror won't help.
oops, I didn't pay attention close enough to what you were asking
Yum spends a good half hour just resolving dependencies for a list of packages I tell it to install.
kc8hfi; thanks. i couldn't remember the package name and never got around to searching
I guess that's because it goes through the complete dependency tree for each package and doesn't cache the results.
does this include the part where it needs to download the package listings ? and most importantly, have you added any additional repositories ?
and if so, which ones?
No, this is after all the listings are downloaded. I'm using local mirrors of Everything and livna
so just core, updates, and livna ?
Essentially, yes.
what is it you're trying to install ?
Bandwidth and download times are not what I'm concerned about here.
"Everything" and "Updates"
the dependency checks is what you want to make faster
bingo
I have a set of several hundred packages I would normally groupinstall, but when one of them encounters a dependency problem, I want to have yum install the rest.
what is it you're trying to install ?
that could explain some of the time involved there
the part about 'several hundred packages'
anyone know how to fix the "This software canniot be installed because JScript is not properly registered. Please repair JScript and then restart the installer" error in crossover??
#crossover
Indeed. When groupinstalling, the resolution takes only about five minutes.
already been there
then go back
that's a commercial product
google for that error?
The yumskipbroken plugin also takes ~40 min to complete its resolution of what packages are broken, as well.
google for cocoa puffs
mmm cereal
I can't imagine why a groupinstall of all the same packages would resolve deps faster
Neither can I. It just... does...
...unless all that calculation was done specifically in advance FOR the groupinstall
which begs the question of why you're not taking advantage of it
oops
whata visual, WebDragon
what visual would that be?
My endgame is to write a script or something that will try to groupinstall, looks at yum's output for broken packages, strips them out, and then tries again.
The coffee visual.
someone at their PC with a coffee cup, taking a drink and their eyes widening :P
ironically you came back from away as well
heh
coffee will tweak someone out in no time :/
apparently you've not had my special DragonCoffee"
...but the script won't be of much help if each yum command takes half an hour to complete.
DragonCoffee", eh? I shall have to try some.
oddly enough, I'm so naturally hyperactive physically that coffee has little to no effect on me -- it's like tossing bricks into the grand canyon trying to fill it
even at age 41
'tis a puzzler to be sure
Ironically, coffee puts me to sleep. (?!?)
i can't get paste the taste/feel
I'm curious how the broken packages make it out of the *-testing repos and into the released ones
*erk*
konversation right
yeah that would tend to gum up the works
(:
RobNyc-work: actually, its ksirc....
oh
that still exist lol
According to Heinlein, there are five descending stages of coffee
Coffee, Java, Jamoke, Joe, and Carbon-remover
The most recent packages that have broken come from when someone requests a newer version of a package in livna's FC5 repo and they just toss in an F7 rpm without giving it a second look.
i would like PySol to be in the repos :/
if you sat there long enough......
in fstab, /dev/sdb2 /home defaults 1 2
in fstab, defaults do you
... I'd sprout leaves. your point?
that'll mount the second partition on the second HD to /home
right?
RobNyc-work: this is fc6 box, konversation is very nice
yes
ty - I wanted to make sure b4 trying to restart the system
you can also add a label to that partition
hahaha!! noah, I meant grand canyon :-p
e2label /dev/sdb2
hehheheheh
Hmm. Any other ideas on an approach to installing hundreds of packages with minimal dependency-resolution time?
s/noah/nah
WebDragon, what do labels do?
make it pretty :P
one'd make the brick companies very happy....
it's a server... I'm repartitioning it now, I don't care about pretty, :P
example from my own system
frozty_sa; you just msged yourself lol. good morning to you too
6am {2} localhost:/root# e2label
/home
then it can be used to show you which HD is which (in case of confusion)
so in /etc/fstab, I have:
LABEL=/home /home ext3 defaults,user_xattr 1 2
hey downhillgames
..........
thus I don't need to identify the exact drive
I did.........hmmmmm
frozty_sa; go install NWN
WebDragon, ok, ty
why install?! it's already on!! :-p
when I upgrade from FC5 to F7 I don't have to worry about /dev/hda2 being now /dev/sda2
never knew about labels b4
frozty_sa; yay, then let's play :P
man e2label
can't right now, I'm working
also tune2fs is useful to know
frozty_sa; ah. later today?
maybe
a gnome application seems to want a gnome-window-decorator, but yum can't seem to provide one, is that a bug?
hi, i have a computer with fedora on it acting as my personal mailserver, i use evolution to connect to it over imap, and have a lot of rules to move messages to folders. Is there some way i can do this on the server instead of on the client?
yes, google for procmail
thanks
Is there a way to calculate yum dependencies ahead of time?
skip the -y option to yum?
yeah
...but then the next time I run it it will calculate them again, won't it?
no
my suggested solution was simply to look at the summary presented before prompted for y or n
but once installed its installed
It will, but it will already have downloaded what it needs to do so.
It's not the downloading that's causing my problem, it's the time it takes to walk through the dependency tree for a huge list of packages.
after switching to Fedora 7, on my laptop the keyboard button to use an external monitor doesn't work anymore. Worked fine with FC 6 on the fly, without doing nothing... Any suggestion on what I can do to use an external monitor, please? I don't have idea what I should check and what I should
do...
hi, can anyone recommend a voip software for linux besides skype ?
ekiga
i haven't used it much though
thanks, i'll give it a try
i see your point, i have no good solution to it, other than starting from bottom and working your way up
ekiga
if you do it in screen, you may be able to scroll more easily
sorry totally missed ur im...like nagios more than bb4
nagios definitely much more manageable and modular
Cool, my window manager disappeared again.
No way to manipulate windows, yay
um, start another one?
How might one go about doing that?
open a term...
gnome-window-decorator
or start your desktop's mini-cli
thanks.
not metacity anymore?
wolsni; ever see "tilde"?
the name seems familar, what's that?
*familiar
the ` key
gnome-wm works.
but if you install the package it drops down a terminal just like in games...
pretty neat
oh, like yakuake for KDE
idk, i dont use KDE
does it drop down from the top of the screen?
yep
"tilda" sorry
Tilda is a Linux terminal taking after the likeness of many classic terminals from first person shooter games, Quake, Doom and Half-Life (to name a few), where the terminal has no border and is hidden from the desktop until a key is pressed.
Has anybody here used Editplus on Windows? Whats a good linux alternative to it. Its the only thing left that's holding me back from installing Fedora on my laptop too. The main feature i'm after is the autocomplete. I've tried messing with BlueFish but i can't get it to do anything close to
what EditPlus does
check if it runs in wine
if I want to add freshrpms.net as another repository for yum where do I start?
i was hoping to go completely windows free, as in no wine. It should be able to run in wine though
depaulis; go to their site and install freshrpms-release
then just yum install w/e you want
just like there is "fedora-release" and "livna-release" and *trails off*
freshrpms and livna don't get along very well though, be warned
yeah I read something about that...
depaulis, do not run yum with livan and freshrpms both enabled
disable freshrpms in the /etc/yum.repos.d/
I found a howto, but that coverd how to do it on fedora core 1, maybe outdated?
definitely
well...fc1 was what, 3 years ago?
I have used yum but never really cared how the repositories work.
so I actually dont know how to disable livan when enabling freshrpms. is it done in the yum.conf ?
good morning Southern_Gentlem
i wonder how many projects have come, gone, re-written or just grown in 3 years
A suggestion i found somewhere was to set both livna and freshrpms to disabled and use --enablerepo for whichever one you want to use when you run yum
tonyT_G_Farmer, yep
thanks.
tonyT_G_Farmer, myself i use only livna
a LOOOOT
downhillgames, afternoon
I lost my MySQL root password... what do I do now?
Are they usually the same, contentwise?
at about fc2 arounds I had my first linux install..since then, I've seen a lot of things come and go and improve etc
MTecknology; start mysqld_safe and reset it
tonyT_G_Farmer, one has stuff other doesnt, but then on some of the stuff thats the same it conflicts
MTecknology; for a howto, check google. it's pretty easily findable last i looked
downhillgames, thanks
sure. happens more than you'd guess i'm sure
downhillgames, would it help if I were trying to access the right DB?
maybe
right server*
after installing freshrpms and I run yum install package, it still want to install the older version of a program then the version I found in freshrpms. Semms like I have to select freshrpms as a repository ?
you need to disable all your other repos, and only enable freshrpms via CLI
CLI ?
man yum
command line interface
okay okay.. Well I try that, thanks for your help.
man yum --disablerepo --enablerepo
depaulis, you need to set enabled=0 in your freshrpms and livna.repo files in /etc/yum.repos.d/
Hey all.
Anyone have the 2.6.22.1 kernel and are still able to mount an ipod? Under 2.6.21 it mounts but not 2.6.22. Same result in Fedora and Ubuntu
frozty_sa, freshrpms claim they dont conflict with everything
they might not be using anything else?
NiskuGuy, so the question to ask yourself is do you want to chance the vulnerbility of 2.6.21 to use the ipod
everything as in the f7 everything repo
NiskuGuy, see https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=249161 and 249282
USB mounts fine for me.. but I got all the updates
ah...but do they? I haven't freshrpms installed
all I keep on is livna
http://www.john-hunt.com/linux/2005/06/27/rescuing-lost-mysql-root-password/
idk.. it's useful
hello
, world
I booted the live cd of FC7 ... whats the default login and password ?
Its got me stumped
it asks for a login/pass??
yeah
i've yet to use the liveCD but that's odd
I got GDM
did you search fedoraforum.org ?
I know
weird
I cant find any mention of this anywhere
friggen irretating
fedora
is the login
there is no password
F7 is very nice... you'll like it
very fast
and nice new featues like user switching
thanks
Hi all. Just wanted to see if someone is having the same issues as me so I can file a proper bug report.
I have a couple issues, but dunno if they're local to my machine.
there is no pwd for the livecd
Thetargos, make sure you have all the updates before asking or filing a report
1) GDM seems to "hang" if there is anything wrong with the Xorg.conf file, or if a device is not found. This didn't used to be the case
Xaero_Vincent Thanks for your suggestion, I know the rules
brb
For example, I have a graphics tablet which is configured in the computer, but if I disconnect it, and then boot, I'll get an error stating that GDM hung and that there seems to be a problem
i've been told to just leave the pwd blank to login
ask about the issues, and also search through bugzilla for related issues
There doesn't seem to be a bugzilla for this particular GDM "problem" (fature?)
This also happened with I first tried to [manually] configure my graphics card.
Seems if you mingle with the xorg.conf file, GDM will hickup. Where X will happily run just fine.
Does GDM has some sort of routine to check for (WW) and (EE) in /var/Xorg.0.log or something?
'cause it would seem that way. I was having problems with the graphics driver not loading the GLX extension causing a couple (WW)s and (EE)s in the X log
I have not seen anything remotely similar to this issue in Bugzilla, nor any complaints about this from other users... hence I ask here as well if anyone can confirm this or if this is local to my machine
is it me or does F7 boot faster too?
Xaero_Vincent, it does seem that way.
i noticed it.. its very nice and I dont think there is even a new init system
Xaero_Vincent, I believe it has to do with the priorities of services.
yea.. well I havent even disabled the services I dont need yet.. I'll probably get even faster
like Bluetooth and stuff
Anyone know of a site or something that has info on cross-platform apps for mobility, like a passsword manager, calendar, blah blah for Linux, Windows, and Windows Mobile?
dont have any of that
I want to populate a phone book on my phone, but I can't imagine typing in all the numbers on the dinky keypad.
or Samba, NFS, etc
I'd like to simply import them.
I have to have a deeper dive into Bugzilla and see if I can find anything related to GDM similar to what I've seen, though I don't hold my breath I'll find anything.
what is the problem with GDM?
do an rpm -q gdm
import using bluetooth or data cable
er, no.
I know how to import just fine.
I want an application to keep all three locations sync;d.
dan__t, first use kaddressbook for stroing ur contacts
You logged out when I explained it... At any rate GDM seems to hang if there's any warning or error in Xorg's log
i got to setup SELinux and the firewall too
Thetargos, hmm
gdm-2.18.3-1.fc7 ?
dan__t, in windows outlook can do that i guess
the sync thing
Xaero_Vincent, yes. And that is why I find this most... disturbing.
Ok, but like I said - I want something really cross-platform.
Xaero_Vincent. X itself is just fine, GDM refuses to start if there are any (WW) or (EE)s in Xorg.0.log, seems it has a routine to check for these, haven't yet seen the new gdmsetup program, so maybe I'll be able to disable the X sanity check there.
dan__t, what is ur phone model
Cingular 8525
I don't think it matters, really - just something that can sync contacts and passwords and other cool things across PocketPC, Wincows, and Linux databases.
Thetargos, well I have a couple (WW) in my Xorg log
Xaero_Vincent, It would seem to be a problem more with (EE)s (I usually get (EE)s when I get (WW)s)
does anyone know if its posible to tell Anaconda which video driver to use from the kernel command line?
Xaero_Vincent, for example, I have a Wacom graphics tablet configured, if I detach the tablet and attempt to restart the X server, GDM will hang because it will be unable to find the device /dev/input/wacom
rather X will be unable to find the device, and GDM wont start.
i see.. well GDM shouldnt because thats just the login screen.. can you do a startx?
Aye, again GDM is the problem, not X
Found something interesting...
Seems the command GDM executes to launch the session is /usr/bin/Xorg -br -audit 0... I wonder if the "problem" is that "-audit" there...
Gonna check. BRB
how can i switch from kerne-2.6.20-1.2962.fc6.i586 to the same kernel for .686 arch?
So, negative on a cross-platform unified syncing application for PocketPC devices eh
greenfish, google 'fc6 common'
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Bugs/FC6Common
ahh. nice
thanks
Indeed, GDM log seems to confirm my suspicions.
hi. got a bunch of message in /var/spool/mail. how can I have sendmail re-process them to resend them again ?
wtf why does beagled keep re-spawning
Is there any way I can map a joystick to the cursor as though it were a mouse?
Wow. The non-Fedora questions are coming out of the woodwork...
Anyways, formail, because, yes.
paper or plastic? or designer grocery back for $300 on ebay
bag*
exploded.
a good program like macromedia dreamweaver but for linux?
i dont think there is anything comparable to dreamweaver for linux, its that sad realy
well any program
names
dan__t, u find any apps ??
el_dan yes but the name escapes me
nouvu or something like that
quanta, el_dan
or bluefish
ok thanks
comparable but well known and being actively improved and
myself I prefer developing for the web using vim and have extensively modified my environment for vim to further that end expeditiously
you can just use Dreamweaver with Wine
or that
or use Xen/Kvm to run it
thats how I did my whole dreamweaver course :P
vim + firefox webdev (or firebug) addon
vim++
vim+=1;
I've been working on a rather nice set of mappings for the html filetype to expedite all the typing
see here:
http://www.osalt.com/dreamweaver
it's not complete by any means but I am regularly improving it
Sooo, is there a package similar to mysql-connector-java for the official (or one of the variant) JDBC connectors for mssql?
Can't seem to find one in pbone or package manager
would like to avoid installing myself, if for no other reason than to keep things organised
So it looks like there are Quanta Plus, Aptana, SeaMonkey, Bluefish, KompoZer, and Nvu
daMaestro, ping
if you didnt want to use Wine or something
osalt is a great site btw
in my case, however, I was required to use Dreamweaver, even if the same can be done with another app
and Vim
http://xrl.us/u44i vim for TextMate fans
kokoko1, pong
WebDragon, Dreamweaver is far more than a text editor
so is Vim
In that case.. you could just use Notepad
pah, Notepad? I might as well use paper and pencil as Notepad
So you can layout Web widgets with Vim?
you can do one hell of a lot with Vim
perhaps Quanta would be helpful
gvim rsync://remotewebsitessh-agenthostname/serverpath/file.php
remote editing thanks to netrw
i know it has an instant preview while you edit the code, not sure if you can drag and drop controls
nvu looks good... havent seen the others tho
http://alexyoung.org/articles/show/12/vim_for_textmate_fans ah there's the article I meant to point to
nvu is basically based on Mozilla's Composer
joy
nvu is a steaming pile of crap.
kokoko1, ahh i see your main
Good luck getting it to build.
kokoko1, you just need a f7 config, hold on
daMaestro, thanks
well I havent tried Nvu or any of the WYSIWYG Dreamweaver alternatives to make a real judgment.. but the screenshots look good
one thing you can't do with dreamweaver is having the exact same colorscheme layout over a screen'd terminal ssh session
http://www.webdragon.net/gallery/xfce.screen.2.jpg
kokoko1, thank EvilBob for doing the work to assemble the list of mirrors correctly
kokoko1, http://repo.damaestro.us/fedora.sync
on the left is Gvim.. on the right is urxvt
daMaestro, thanks alot, got very quick support
s/main/mail/
personally I don't think any WYSIWYG editor can streamline the markup as cleanly as one can achieve by hand
bpersonally I don't think any WYSIWYG editor can streamline the markup as cleanly as one can achieve by hand/b
of course, clean markup only matters if you're editing by hand, so...
I think it should be WYSIWYG(provided you don't look at the markup)
au contraire
clean markup matters quite a bit
not just for SEO
but for alternate browsers (PDA's etc)
Hey, could someone help me get the display settings right on my laptop
maintainability
for the display hardware and video card, it says they are both unknown..
I would like to change my resolution higher
clean markup also means smaller file sizes usually, which result in faster load times at the browser and less bandwidth usage
try claiming that clean markup only matters when you edit by hand, in the #web or #css channel and see how far it gets you
=P
sweet heavens NWN can be hard, http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/9051/nwnchaosinforestws0.jpg
Downhillgames, what game is that
neverwinter nights
aka NWN
oh
Neverwinter Nights, native for linux
oh
there are 21 guys chasing me haha
I have WoW on linux
you need to get a henchman and some summoned beasts
me too
What server?
Echo Isles here
private one, used to play Daggerspine
that is some intense stuff there, tho
WoW is like a remake of NWN, pretty much
Matter as of fact I have to configure my game pad to work on linux, and configure WoW
Neverwinter Nights +2 exp +premium modules +(free) custom content online = $30 and 10GB of space
but will run on just about anything
WebDragon|away, minibufexplorer? thought that plugin isn't needed anymore now that there's tabs.
anyone using moinmoin on FC7
tabs annoy me
they are still releasing new stuff for it, s3cur17y
everyone hyperfocused on tabs
commercial^
thanks to browsers and such
you mean firefox? :P
for NWN
WebDragon|away, well the builtin tabs are less confusing that that plugin was.
s3cur17y; yeah. they just came out with more content
I just upgraded my FC6 system to FC7 using the boot media upgrade method - my root partition is an LVM under RAID1 and the new kernel/initrd can't find it - is there any reason why RAID1 wouldn't be supported?
I just upgraded my FC6 system to FC7 using the boot media upgrade method - my root partition is an LVM under RAID1 and the new kernel/initrd can't find it - is there any reason why RAID1 wouldn't be supported?
hmmm...
I am waiting for another expansion for WoW
but then again, _I read the plugin's documentation_ which might have had some effect on my enjoyment of it
(:
s3cur17y; wow is boring...
WebDragon|away, the way it reorders and hides some of the bufs sometimes. i used it for quite a while before vim7 was released.
My wife and I play together
read its internal docs and change some of the prefs
s3cur17y; i got to lvl 25 and quit retail... i got a lvl 70 on the free one and a lvl 50something... still boring
tabs still annoy me.
:tabe++
do tabs work in a ssh-session in a urxvt ?
So far we got my father in-law to play, my wifes uncle, her fathers friend
minibufexplorer does
you mean to _pay_
what on free servers?
you dont "play" WoW haha... all you do is hit the same buttons over and over
when I boot my upgraded FC7 system I get a 'Volume group "VolGroup01" not found' - If I boot a rescue image and vgscan the volgroup is found on the /dev/md1 raid1 array
WoW is just a button masher that you do online with friends... too boring
WebDragon|away, sure. (or konsole)
anyone know how to remove the 'trash' and 'home' icons from the desktop?
uanyone know how to remove the 'trash' and 'home' icons from the desktop?/u
loev-chan, just delete 'em. you can in kde anyway.
WoW is the modern day Euchre, after the first few times it's pretty mindless... Ventrillo ftw
what is neverwinter like?
naw not in gnome...
ventrilo is the devil
ventrilo lets me make snide comments while mindlessly running instances!
you know how in WoW your gear is +this and +that... NWN you craft it yourself, change the appearences, etc
hey all !
s3cur17y; it's the root of everything that WoW does except inuitive and non-repeatative
waiting on Hero's Journey (www.play.net)
didn't WoW come out first?
intuitive and non-repetitive*
O_o
NWN is from 1999
what are the numbers representing in the symlink files in rd#.d directories ? like "S0pcscd" ??
I have to get this working, http://www.jimbomania.com/nostromo/
s3cur17y; i played WoW *instead of* NWN for about 2 months... when i came back to NWN it was like a breath of fresh air
and it's native for Linux
grrr. I TouchPad is annoying me
back to playing...
can anyone tell me what they mean ?
shutdown/startup and runlevels 0 through 6
generalhan; ^
ok well im trying to label my symlink properly for a file that i have in /etc/init.d so that i can get this script to run at startup ... how would i have to label the symlink ?
generalhan, you don't. you add a header to your script in /etc/init.d then chkconfig --add it. man chkconfig
use chkconfig to manage startup scripts
what zcat said
roger, thx i will read up on chkconfig
np
so if i have a file /etc/init.d/blah and i add the line '#chkconfig 35 20 80' to the script and do a 'chkconfig --add blah' it will start blah at runlevels 3 and 5 ?
Alright, I need sound. I'm going nuts. I can't handle this anymore heh.
I currently have apache2 running and can connect to it locally but not remotely ? any ideas ? firewall ?
Most likely.
or SeLinux settings
That, too.
man
Guess I need to pop this machine cover off to see which soundcard I'm using.
Worked fine under FC6, but not so much in FC7
yeah
why they have to get fancy
I don't know
what language is Pirut made in?
Python.
I think Im gonna try modifying it to enable and disable repositories along with modifying them
like u can in Yumex
im installing glade right now
just have like a repository tab or something
I think someone else is working on that you might check the fedora-devel list
oh really?
maybe a combined effort would bear fruit
that dude can't stay connected for more than 2 seconds
what dude?
he who i can't tab complete
Xaero_Vincent
?
Xaero_Vincent, bah, sorry... yet another bug with this new 'ctrlproxy' bnc i'm using.
doesn't show you in this channel.
yea.. well you know something.. I downloaded the latest Yumex and it looks pretty good actually
Hello all. I need a little bit of help installing Fedora7 on an emachine that only recognises something like 32G og a 250G hdd. Any suggestions? Already searched the forums.
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Bugs/F7Common
Ok, Soundblaster PCI 512.
Seems... to not work well in Fedora.
Quick question... What wouyld case fedora7 to hange at starting the INIT on bootup
anyone know how to add those links in the nautilus browser that are on the left side?
the ones that say 'filesystem' and expand
I added ldap under nsswitch.conf would that cause the INIT to hang there if it could not reach the ldap server hosting for some reason
thanks ivazquez. I'll give it a try.
brb
good evening
any mysql guru around?
muumi; what's the problem?
got some troubles with mysqld and FC6
upgraded from fc5-fc6
and now the sql host doesn't start
that _still_ doesn't say anything
what's the error?
wait,I'll paste...
i tried using the chkconfig method ... i thought i had it right, but it still didnt run at start up ?? http://generalhan.pastebin.ca/633517
oh boy
lol
im in no hurry ! dont worry about me !
lol
"#
6 [ERROR] Error message file '/usr/share/mysql/english/errmsg.sys' had only 463 error
muumi; reinstall mysqld
that's ridiculous
it's downloading the upgrades at the moment
muumi; that's good
funny thing is that it has worked fine...
generalhan; i've not any experience with using chkconfig i merely know what it does
running gallery2 on top of it...
ask zcat or the channel
ok thanks ... youre a step above me ... cause i relaly dont understand it at all !!
speaking of gallery2, i'm going to be installing that, how is it?
downhillgames, ok, i prefer plogger myself
seems to do all I want to do
generalhan; all it does, really, is generate the service entries for you
abit hard to tweak if you don't like the default looks
well i read the man page and i thought i had it down ... but apparently i dont !!
or at least the previous version was, seems to be better documentation now
muumi; good info
i can do that a minute, actually
the planets are aligned, i typed my root pass correctly the first time :O
Quick question... What wouyld case fedora7 to hange at starting the INIT on bootup
awestwell, hdd probs?
dont think so
I have seen this before
had a friend looking at it that knows a bit of php and he said it looked quite allright
If I reload the box its bots
boots
Ok, so, this Soundblaster PCI 512 worked well under Fedora 6, but not so much under 7. Anyone care to lend a hand?
it hands at the INIT version statement
ive had issues like that, that ended up being a shorted Mobo, i replaced the motherboard and it was perfect from then on out
hmmm
the bad part is that it can happen at anytime, so it could work perfectly for months, or years and then one day just stop working
who was it that said something about plogger?
ya... the box was running slow so I rebooted it and then this happened
So you are sure that its a hardware issue
awestwell, seems the most likely situation
could it be ram
was it you who talked about plogger?
awestwell, pop in a live cd and see how well it works
muumi, yes
good idea
know of some other example than the one on the plogger site? would like to see what you can get it to look like
hold
the default doesn't impress
muumi, mine isn't the pretiest either,http://www.pembo13.com/lib/plogger/
hmm, crops the parrot part in my window...
muumi, yah, me too.. i need to cleanup that site
well it doesn't look too bad either...seems at least to be somewhat easyto fiddle with?
muumi, fairly
well might have to take a look
if that boots fine what would you suggest then
promised a friend to try to dig out something she could run on her hosted machine...gallery doesn't fit, the hosting site doesn't quite offer all it needs
awestwell, try and older kernel
muumi, what are her limitations?
can't remember exactly..some related to the php and some to the sql versions
ok
think it was that all safe mode thingies in php didn't work or something like that
the machine was some *BSD with lots of restrictions
ofcourse she could try the admin, a woman mig htget her ways
damned keyboard
my logitech doesn't work ok with linux :/
muumi, mine works 98%
every other space get to be 20 spaces...and every other doesn't make a space at all..
so either a lots of spaces or none
tweaked it somehow?
muumi, just a bit, most interface wise
meaning exactly what?
hacked it to fit into the look of my site
ok...
I was merely wondering bout the keyboard though
ohh
muumi, not much, just assigned functions to the multimedia keys
wonder why mine doesn't work...
maybe I'm so ugly
muumi, quite possible
thanks
muumi, you're welcome
should've seen it coming
Anyone know where i can find a solution to the Davicom NIC issue with Fedora 7?
can I empty the errormsg log someway if upgrading/reinstalling doesn't quite make it?
mmmm idk
that's a lot of errors :P
downhillgames, do you know of any good MIDI synthesizers for Fedora?
yes it is...
i realise i have the direct answers for some things, but yeah...
Lord_InuTaisho; i have no clue what so ever.
umm it seems to cry over some %64 table
muumi; my knowledge in MySQL is limited but yeah... let's see what the update does
what im surprised about is that no soundfonts are in Fedora's repository
muumi; are you going from x64 to i385?
i386*
downloading 230/370
Feel free to submit and maintain a package.
umm,no...only got Athlon xp 2600+ on this machine..so 686 that is then...(or 386yes)
ah
don't have the money to buy such a fancy machine
my house eats my money :/
moved in a year ago and all started whenwe found a leak..so 3 months no kitchen,no shower and no sauna...
Anyone know how to change my NIC from being loaded as tulip to dmfe ?
can you take a look at this and tell me what im doing wrong please ? http://generalhan.pastebin.ca/633517
this script is still not run at startup
Other than absolutely everything?
haha, yea other than that !
or at least more specifically than that !
Scripts to load modules go in /etc/sysconfig/modules, and they need to end in .module.
it created the symlinks for me in the corresponding rc#.d
hmm
i have this working on my FC5 box and my /etc/sysconfig/modules directory is empty !
hello fedora
Fine, don't listen then. I'm not the one with the problem.
FC5 is DEAD
are there any links on how to squeeze the most out of fedora?
power tools, etc
as win95/98/nt
i found very large soundfont under public domain.... so i guess that would fulfill fedora's regulation...
It's not that 100+MB beast, is it?
that maybe A way to do it ... but according to zcat, the chkconfig method should work too
i wonder if thats why Fedora, among many distros, does not have a software synthesizer already set up with ALSA
I'm not sure zcat understood what you were trying to do.
seems that everyt time you fix something you break something else..
generalhan, you didn't say what you were doing when you asked about initscripts
ivazquez, were you talking to me when you said about the 100+MB beast?
Yes.
I would not know about the status of those items I do not use them
ivazquez, no
wow ... i wish i understood whats going on here ... on my other FC machine this worked by adding the symlinks in the rc#.d directories ... and my sysconfig/modules directory is empty ... and it works there
its called the Air soundfont
why wont it work for me now ?
its smaller than 100MB
but it sounds really good
Purple elephants.
FC5 is dead, you need to upgrade to an active release
OMG please stop saying that ... i am on FC7 now .. i AM upgrading my FC5 box as we speak ... that is what this conversation is about
i did just that and got like 100 problems :/
i guess i just dont understand why it matters what is taking place in the initscript ... if it runs at startup it should still run the modprobe command ... right ?
did what? used win95/98/nt?
ivazqquez, it worked. But I had to reload the Dymanic Drive Overlay with MaxBlast before it would. Either way, I got it. Thank you very much.
upgraded from fc5
Yeah user error is always a problem
that too, that too
muumi; fixing/breaking^: what do you mean? all my apps work as they should... NWN is kinda buggy atm but that hasn't been updated in forever so it's just "not fixed yet"
signing out now. Gotta watch the install. Thanks for the help.
"in forever" well not as often as i'd like
well seems every time I up grade something I have configured and finally got working, breaks down..
Installed Fedora 7 on an older Intel box, and it's only NIC is a Davicom. I can't connect to my network. I've searched google and heard things like "tulip" vs. "dmfe"
but, that'll be another story. out with the dog and sleep
bye
muumi; dont upgrade
Anyone have any ideas no how to fix this?
bpat1434; those are driver names...
what do the forum posts say to use?
what do the forum web hosting posts say to use?
+1 more reason for a HCL
They say to update the kernel to 2.6, but that's from FC 5, but apparently changing dmfe should work
bpat1434; have you tried to change the driver?
can't figure out how to do it
anyone know how come aiglx isn't working with nvidia atm?
Hmmm, http://www.medisoncelebrity.com/ A:The Linux version that comes with the laptop is Fedora from RedHat
unichrome? :/
I am having some difficulties setting up remote VNC for my FC6 servers. I can connect to the servers (ipaddress:2) but I get no desktop. I have also lost the desktop for the server (local screen connected) Any help would be most appreciated.
http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/25/medison-celebrity-150-of-linux-laptop-for-the-people/
Hehe, scam? Normally small oem's don't claim to have their own factory
AndyCap, site's in engrish... ships a month later... flybynight.
sweglish I guess. :P
did someone ping me earlier??
You have any info on using Davicom NIC in Fedora 7?
Not so much pinged as just looked at.
bpat1434, not out of the top of my head
bpat1434, paste the output of lspci
okay
i have a feeling its rebranded
And the output of lspci -n.
ok now i see who pinged me
Hey guys
them old bones can't take too much abuse
ooh, it has a brasil connection... tasty
these old bones have had lots of time to get lots of milk
I'm completely new to linux... could someone tell me where I should get started? PM me, thanks.
Okay, pasted http://rafb.net/p/uJLt6C66.html

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/udev/+bug/48026 -- It's what got me working
Ok, so im willing to accept that for some reason in FC5 i was able to get this initsript to work for me, but in FC7 i cant ... so what do i have to do with sysconfig/modules to get this to work in C7 ?
Southern_Gentlem; generalhan is trying to get some modprobe to work w/ chkconfig. any help? :x i've never used chkconfig before
i dont want to piss anyone else off ... so if they say it cant be done ... then i will do it however it needs to be done
hehe, you're not pissing off anyone.. and if you are, they are being dumb about it
generalhan, tell me exactly what you are trying to do

if it works with xserver i have no isea
2 days ago so it must be
i have an FC5 box currently, i have a new server that i just put FC7_x64 on and am trying to replicate everything. on the FC5 box i put a file in init.d called modprobe that just ran 3 simple modprobe commands. i manually created the symlinks in the rc#.d directories and at boot they would
run ... now they wont.
so i tried chkconfig to get it to work and it still wont
Southern_Gentlem; firewing1 knows his stuff.
if he says it works, it works

generalhan, selinux set to ?

off?
i'm afraid to try it
yes
if chkconfig --add worked and added the symlinks it should work, /etc/sysconfig/modules is just there to help (those scrips are executed from rc.sysinit)
generalhan, ivazquez already answered. historically you'd use /etc/rc.modules, but now you sysconfig/modules.
elzip back up your stuff
since i couldnt get the symlinks to work i tried the chkconfig method this way: http://generalhan.pastebin.ca/633598
it already is
then what do you have to loose if you have to reinstall other than time
and what i said was i am willing to do it that way if i MUST, but i dont know how
generalhan, files with modprobe bla in 'em.
and i was able to get this to work via the init.d before
grep -A8 sysconfig/modules /etc/rc.sysinit
generalhan, before was 2 generations ago
thats correct ... but i didnt assume that anything changed in regards to the initsripts
which command will help me to filter the first 5 lines from a file or another command ?
man grep
head
and when i ran the chkconfig command like zcat suggested ... it DID make the links in the rc#.d directories so i thought it was good to go
spacelobsters, tail -n +5 somefile
spacelobsters, nvm. assumed you meant filter out.
grep does it ? cool
Hi, I'm trying to install the latest Fedora 7-x86_64 from DVD on a brand new Dell PowerEdge SC 1435. When I pop it in and turn it on all I get is a line that reads "ISOLINUX 3.36..." The same DVD on my HP laptop boots to the first blue screen as expected. An Ubuntu CD boots fine on the
PowerEdge. Any suggestions? Is this normal behavior on a Dell server?
