WebDragon, drunk-vision

then you can shout "YOU CALL THIS STABILITY?"
*wibble*

i've seen Fedora 8 on a few webpages, i never read anything about it though... somehow on a driver site i saw the Fedora 8 drivers section..

and besides, even if do get the official values from acer its no guarantee that it's correct. basically you have normal "crt" timings and vesa reduced timings.

acer haha, no wonder

what package is cvt from ?

is there even a f8t1 yet?

http://www.uruk.org/~erich/projects/cvt/ xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.1.1-47.10.fc6

oooh processor temp got up to 82F

gtf and scanpci but no cvt
not part of FC5 I suppose

ok. its in FC6 at least and F7. I guess FC5 was too early for cvt.

maybe -- what's the full path to the program?
/usr/bin/ ?
mighta been in a different package from extras

yeah. and I can't find it on FC4. but no FC5 around

cvt is part of xorg-x11-server-Xorg on fedora 7

Not yet; the freeze for F8-Test1 is scheduled for July 24.
See http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/8/Schedule for more info.

oh great. so now we get pepole running in here wondering where to get F8
back to playing OMF

yeah codergeek42 I was just reading that
its pretty much what I thought

F8? Rawhide?
Did they get rid of the balloons in F8?

same thing at this point.
my rawhide VM still has them.

good night;o

no AndyCap I was referring to XcercaX 's comment above
I like the balloons

get rid of the balloons? no way.
and I was refering to t1 coming out soon.

Why not come up with something more original....

its another month aint it?

oh I see what I did
forgot -lm

http://pastebin.com/d660f826

the ideal theme would be a visual play on the word that "f8" sounds like. don't know how you'd capture that though.

can someone look at my grub.conf to tell me why it dont work

ohhh, clever boy
so what bells am i missing?

knowing jack shit about python at the time too

oh i completely missed that, WebDragon.
you meant cruiseoveride, not me.

i had to remove certains char's from it in FC7 something to do with unicode this/that dont know
ui had to remove certains char's from it in FC7 something to do with unicode this/that dont know/u

strange, unicode should work perfectly on F7 considering it works on FC5
and I have that exact script on my xchat for F7 too

yes it worked on fc5 and fc6

FC4 - whats the best method to upgrade php on here?

but not on fc7

you using gnome-xchat perhaps ?

huh?

ok guess not
different apps
in xchat type /exec -o env |grep LANG

gnome-xchat looked promising for about a day

FC4 has reached its End-of-Life long ago; if you really want to continue using it (highly not recommended), you'll need to do that manually, as no more repository updates for it will happen.

heh

LANG=en_US.UTF-8

hm you should be getting UTF-8 just fine

codergeek42, k...I tried a configure/make/make install of php and get errors on the new libphp.so
libphp5.so that is

AndyCap, oh the eye and pentagram...

"Basic DOS 6.22 boot disk" Please, someone pm me

one is probably available online somewhere as an image

i don't have any windows machine here right now.

DaHood, freedos.org

tommy, but i cannot locate one

I'm scared to ask, but WHY!

I remember a site but ...

zcat, i want to make bios upgrade on a really old mobo. i don't risk with anything other than dos 6.22

http://www.putergeek.com/downloads/ unzip, dd, go

can anyone remind me how to start a 3D app with DRI support if I have Xgl running?

DaHood, bootdisk.com if you don't care about free

AndyCap, thanks

freedos is safe to use

DaHood, dont most mobo manufacturers provide a boot program for bios/firmware upgrades?

zcat, this is about dos i don't think anyone will sue me because i am forced to use this stuff.

you put it on a cd (or floppy, heh)
and ifyour mobo cannot boot of a cd its time to geta new one

i think floppies are making a come back

chrismon, yes, but i didn't have an image

Any mobo can boot off cd

haha

even a 386

cruiseoveride, that would not cover "any"
and not all 386 mobos will
not all 486 either

not even all pentium

show me one that cant

true dat
cruiseoveride, they're all in the garbage dump a frew miles from my home, sorry
otherwise i'd mail them to you

if it can boot off ide, it can boot off cdrom

uh

bollocks.

hahah

but that's to be expected from you I guess

haha

cruiseoveride, you know that CD-ROM drives were not always IDE?

well i had a cdrom drive in ...1994 it was scsi

(and there are other issues too heh)

how do i find what block my root fs is

if I comment out the HorizSync and VertRefresh lines that I had to add in the xorg.conf and put in the ModeLine I got from cvt I get back down to 640x480 again

What vid card?

AndyCap, at the putergeek site how am i supposed to use the .exe files? Unfortunately i don't have a windows machine near me at the moment and it's late at night
AndyCap, can you provide some more help please?

Asus V7m-266 mobo with GF2 MX chipset built in

you can't lose the H and V sync lines. but they don't have to do more than cover the hsync and vsync that's in the modeline

you mean nforce2

there we go again.

in the xorg.conf it says that to use ddc, I need to comment those out

Are you using the nvidia drivers?

thought you said ddc didn't work. :P
already told you how.

I couldn't get away from having those damn H/V sync lines
and there was no way for me to determine what they were supposed to be since there was no hard copy documentation on what the actual values for this display are
these numbers are PURE guesswork:
HorizSync 30.0 - 83.0
VertRefresh 56.0 - 75.0

thats will give you 1280x1025 at 75Hz

AndyCap, aha. now i got it. unzip image.exe and voila
AndyCap, thanks

WebDragon, are you using the official nvidia drivers

no, just 'nv'

hi

should be enough, but wont hurt to use the nvidia drivers

with those numbers and no modelines I get 1680x1050 on this display

look in the legacy section on the nvidia site

22" widescreen flat panel on which ddc no workie

at 60Hz sure

ddc must work at some level then.

but my point is that there was no way for me to find out what those numbers should be since there was no hardcopy documentation stating them
if someone else with a similar display size hadn't come up with them I'd still be stuck at 640x480

acer website?

acer'
acer's documentation does NOT have the HV values on it

acer is really cheap stuff fyi

I googled like crazy when I first got this thing because I was PISSED
it also arrived without a single dead or stuck pixel
and didn't cost me an arm and a leg

haha

so, I'm happy with it
3 year warranty too
no complaints here

got flash?

Flat screens are like sound systems, some people 'think' they have good ones, rich folk buy 'expensive' ones, but only a handful of people actually have 'good' ones

so if I put this modeline after the HorizSync and VertRefresh lines:
Modeline "1680x1050_60.00_rb" 119.00 1680 1728 1760 1840 1050 1053 1059 1080 +HSync -Vsync
do I need to change the Screen subsection Display Mode to read:
Modes "1680x1050_60.00_rb" "1680x1050" "1440x900"
?

and 'good' is not the same for all uses, applications or situations

that res is a little wide, is your screen wide?

if you want to use that modeline, yes.

22" widescreen :: acer AL2223W -- look it up on newegg.com
ok. testing it now

Cannot open root device "VolGroup00/LogVol00" or unknown-block(0,0)

haha

can someone help me correct this^

gross
where are you?

load screen i get a kernel panic

boot up the recovery disc

k

its part of the dvd too
the joys of lvm
I love the way you can put pictures onto folder icons in gnome
so cool

but my main point was that you can grab the hsync and vsync from the cvt timing. and a modeline if the x server doesn't know that resolution already

Got Lag?

que?
ah, he left

should i mount the instaltion with chroot?

yeah few minnutes ago
LOL

kRiMe8, try

it loaded

Bob the builder, Booooohb

Ok ?? That is all

sendmail the shites

It's the shizzle when it works.

kRiMe8, did you change your config recently, to cause this? new kernel etc..?
macro compiling man
postfix is for gurls

yes new kernal

fedora kernel?

and i had to redo the grub.conf it was all messed up

sendmail has the highest concentration of code crack of all applications available.

i got a sample one from zcat now i just need to figure out how to make it work

can i see the one zcat gave you
actually give both, your current one too

http://pastebin.com/d1b63370b
current

ok, so I dropped in the ModeLine and specified ONLY that ModeLine for the Modes section and it works
somewhat better

so do you have flash?

kRiMe8, line 13, put a space after initrd

but even CVT would have left me in the dark as to what to place under HorizSync and VertRefresh
as in the browser plugin?

yes.

yep

ok

current for Linux from adobe's site

kRiMe8, and try boot it, with just that change

no. VertRefresh needs to cover 60Hz. and Horizsync needs to cover the HorizSync cvt tells you

cruiseoveride ok

kRiMe8, corrected one http://pastebin.com/m78e2881e

Is there a known memory leak in the kernel or driver module for the Nvidia Quadro NVS 120 or 110 video cards? WHatever is stock in Fedora 7

dinner time

so how was the pixelmapping on VGA?

not sure I understand what you mean

for this kernel, 2.6.21-1.3228-fc7

if you choose pixelmapping in the menu (top middle)

ah one sec
pixelmapping

cruiseoveride thank you it loads now

yes.

looks fine -- no moire

that's good then.

kRiMe8, hey no worries, i time will come when I will call upon you for help, but for now, just enjoy the party

not all auto config monitors get it quite right. :P

hmm. i need to find a $300 laptop with built-in, linux-supported wifi
suggestions anyone?

3 cheers for the acer AL2223W then !

buy 3 100 dollar laptops

wat?

WebDragon|away; i am impressed with Acer. good call!

sorry, that was for downhillgames .

i hear a birdie... chirp chirp cheep cheeep cheep

I spent months researching before deciding on which monitor to get

AndyCap; my cousin, for college

asked a LOT of people around here who had monitors

WebDragon|away; LAPTOP :P not monitor haha

then watched newegg for price issues

tigerD man
eggs are for humpty dumpty

f TD

this is a monitor on my desktop
not an acer laptop

i like acers for laptops for sure

we just threw out like 10x 22inch crts today

cruiseoveride; does your back hurt? :P

haha, no way i told them to throw it out

nice
$400. this is going to be fun

for what?

acer laptops on newegg

downhillgames, spend a little more and get the cheapest dell inspiron. then at least you can replace it when it breaks.

good God if you would shut up for just a minute you would know what someone else was talking about

zcat; my cousin said $300. knowing him he means $150 up to $250
bzcat; my cousin said $300. knowing him he means $150 up to $250 /b
EvilBob; if anyone is shutting up it's me! er... yeah! rawr!

downhillgames, maybe your cousin doesn't have a good price expectation, unless he means old & used?

zcat; used isn't an issue, but yeah... he's kinda lowballing

Which file do I need to backup before I try and install a video driver? Xconfig?

zcat; but i'm his "computer genious cousin" :P

you might also check for the ASUS name in addition to Acer

EvilBob; can't say i've had experience with them but sure, thanks.

./etc/X11 dir?

i didn't even know there were "ASUS laptops"

Yeah not bad at all, I got one recently after some clients had good luck with them

i like ASUS motherboards

finally

EvilBob; the prices look kinda steep. i'll check ebay *cringe* and some other sites

yeah was not sure waht they had on the low end

go on ebay and buy a labtop instead

what's a labtop?

all things beautiful, old mobo's bios has been upgraded from an ancient version to an almost-ancient version, but it still does not want to see the 200GB hard drive. anyway
thanks all for the help

a spelling error.

mine is not low end by any stretch of the imagination

EvilBob; if you want to say which one just go head. my desktop smokes it

if you're lucky not as many bidders

is it me or is the f7 released version of k3b much better
the skin is differnt for one, but the actual usage is just better
detects dvds n stuff faster

Melio, debatable

Melio; i can't express how many times i say that to myself when using F7. "wow, this is working easier than it used to"

well oddly. it is

compared to what?

sdodson, fc6 same box

FC6 for me

ebay - where people pay 80% - 120% of the new price, for old junk.

I coulda had old libs or something

bang for the buck the laptop I got would be tough to beat. 4 Gigs Ram, 160 Gig 7200 rpm SATA HDD, Core 2 Duo, 14.1" wide LCD

if you do that's your own lookout

I'm having an interesting problem... for some reason yum dependancies arent checking dependancies of dependancies as they used to do

you were expecting regression?

who knows. it's just better

zcat; how do you think i could afford that new pc? haha

sdodson, I wasnt expecting anything.
change progressivly on minor things. but not stuff like k3b :p
if I wanted to write opensource, would C++ be the best language to do it in?
specificly gui based applications

do you know C++?

nope

$1530 shipped

probably gonna have to learn C first

then no.

I know a little about objects and headers
but that's the extent. very little

EvilBob; $1,200 shipped. retails over 2g
EvilBob; i know people

shold I just learn perl or something?

Melio, i'd suggest python (and pygtk for the gui)

i'd probably give python or perl if you're so inclined a go. maybe even the new love people have for ruby is ok

Melio; i was just gonna say that... python looks fun and easy... let alone useful

pygtk is what gets used in fedora. there's WX and Qt interfaces for python, perl as well

does anyone know which file I need to backup before I install the NV driver from nvidia? Is it the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file?

i hope nobody minds (why should you, really) but i'd like to state 1 more time... yum install firestarter
it is EASILY the best ifconfig/netstat/iptables GUI out

Melio, pygtk is also what the official bittorrent client uses (was wx previously iirc)

ok

sorry, easiest to use over "best"

I'm gonna grab some books on python then
does python connect to sql hosting pretty decent?

Melio; honestly i haven't the time to go to the library to look for books. if you find useful titles let me know ^_^

yum install pygtk2 and then run /usr/share/doc/pygtk2-2.10.4/examples/pygtk-demo/pygtk-demo

downhillgames, msg me with your aim/yahoo ect.. I'll add you to my secure linux web hosting geek squad list

Melio; 1337.

what is the standard key to wake up on suspend?
is that a BIOS setting?

usualy yes
wake on anything events are bios

is there a PC default?

nuonguy, I suppose it's differnt for each bios

on my laptop, it seems to be the power button, but on my desktop, that seems to be restart

and there are many breeds

k
I'll hafta reboot and look at what the BIOS says
thanks, Melio

hmm, looking around, doesn't look like the soundcard compatibility matrix knows about Nvidia's "High Definition" audio chipset -- has anyone heard any rumors about it working with Linux?
bhmm, looking around, doesn't look like the soundcard compatibility matrix knows about Nvidia's "High Definition" audio chipset -- has anyone heard any rumors about it working with Linux?/b

ok, any reason why codecs wouldnt work even if they're installed?
i even went the hard way of untarring everything to /usr/lib/codecs
ok, well that was actually easier than yum, but harder to manage
i dont understand

yum

ok, well that still doesnt solve my problem....

what codecs?

hello i have a window open where i am editing menu.lst and it wont let me save it because its read only. how do i get around this?

ilovefedora; open as root. look into setting up "sudo" for your user. www.fedorasolved.org has an article on it in "post install"
can't miss it.

downhillgames, any, the only codec that seems to be operating normally is the mp3 plugin, yeah, i feel a little dirty for using "illegal" codecs, but meh.... no other codec seems to be working
and i've installed them all, manually and through yum

When using the repair console, how can I mount a USB drive?

_Centauri_; do you have the Livna repo installed and enabled?

downhillgames, yes

_Centauri_; GNOME or KDE?

downhillgames, i use both, but atm i'm using gnome

_Centauri_; yum install gstreamer-plugins-ugly gstreamer-plugins-bad

done and done, doesnt work

then you've managed to botch something up in your quest for codecs
what app are you attempting to play MP3s with?

I tried xine instead of gstreamer, works greaet
except no codecs

Or... more to the point, when in repair console, how do I know which device to mount to mount a USB drive? lsusb?

except mp3
doesnt matter which program i use, they all seem to have the same problem, mplayer, xine, amarok

stormzen; fdisk -l can say
_Centauri_; when you say manually you mean......... what?

ha-ha, downhillgames. Thanks kindly.

stormzen; /me doesn't understand

untarring the mplayer codec pack into /usr/lib/codecs, and then linking /usr/lib/win32, etc...

thanks VileGent. one more window on my desktop cube and i'll cry

sudo save

VileGent; Southern_Gentlem linked me there previously but i haven't the will or the need for doing so
all i have bound is...
for people who ask if their $900 BEAST will run Compiz Fusion

VileGent... ahh... i missed the /usr/local/lib/codecs dir... that could do it
interestingly enough even when i was using xine for example, i even set it to use the dir i know the codecs are in though... still no luck, but let me tinker more
i honestly think i'm missing a dependancy somewheres
nope, still no luck

mplayer seesm to work fine here with the win codecs from the all codecs tarball unpacked to /usr/lib/codecs in spite of the docs which say otherwise there is no /usr/local/lib/codecs here

hmm.. well it doesnt matter, its not working
i think my yum is janked or something
because i had to manually track down some dependencies in amarok when i installed it, which peeves me slightly

_Centauri_, rpm -q livna-release

then again, it could be this computer, it was underwater....
livna-release-7-2

what dep was missing

a few libs, i dont recall off the top of my head.. lemme see if my console history still has 'em

i just yum installed amarok with no deps

Why is the choice made for a proprietary mp3 decoder? I realize it is patent-encumbered, so you cannot put it in Fedora, but that's no reason to direct users to a proprietary codec download instead of a free mp3 codec download.

missing

yeah, thats what i did on my lappy. but on my desktop, it didnt work well at all, nor did blender,i know i had to install freealut, and a few other deps
libdvdread was one for amarok

louis we do send the users to livna repo
_Centauri_, i smell conflicting repos

VileGent, all i have is livna installed

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/FeatureCodecBuddy

its a fresh install of F7
the only thing i added was livna

_Centauri_, i just installed it and it works for me

well thats very helpful.... sorry, this is very frustrating, especially since all my other fedora boxen are quite easy to manage

_Centauri_, i understand that
_Centauri_, 32 or 64

32

ah!
I didn't read that page through

i wish xine could give me some output as to why it cant read the codecs i have

reading is good

thanks for help earlier, guys.

ahh..... mplayer now works ok
but xine isnt, even though xine is looking at the same directory mplayer does

http://rafb.net/p/gmuCjO18.html

you're launching xine from the command line and it doesn't tell you?
VileGent, are you supporting yourself? lol

nope, it is silent, and it just comes up with a dialog box, and it says 'start playback anyway?'
really descriptive
but, at least mplayer works

maybe there's a debug info switch?

possibly

"yum list xine\*" see what you do not have installed

I installed everything....

you might want xine-lib-extras-nonfree

have it
i kinda know what i'm doing, i have actually done this before, but this time, its not working as it should, which is why i'm here

speaking of codecs, is there something available that will decode dolby digital plus? I ripped an HD-DVD movie, but have no way to hear the sound properly (it's ddp)

yeah just when you THINK you KNOW what you are doing... OMG Daylight!

heh.. got hacked last week. It was kind of like that...

hehe.. yeah, well, i dont actually think my problem is with the codecs, i really think its with yum not providing all the dependencies i need, which is kinda hard to track down..

or the battleaxe smacks you with the cast iron skillet

well....

try cleaning yum.

SAM_theboy!

Let me just say thx you all for nothing

uninstalling and reinstalling.

Hey BOBBY
long time no see

SAM_theman, your welcome

IT Worked Guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hi all

j/k

you are welcome, nothing is always free!

SAM_theman just play warsow, you goof

let me get a link
got it
hey is it Multiplay?

duh
otherwise I wouldn't urge you to play a game against me

ahhh

ok, lets say i just got a free computer, that just happened to be underneath 3 feet of water... now lets also assume this same computer, I'm actually using at the moment, could something have janked itself up to the point where it will handle everything well, but sometimes it causes wierd computational errors, like say... yum not checking every dependency? Its about the only theory i have on any of this

you got MSN

SAM_theman Nope. I've got IRC though, what IRC server can I find you on?

#maya #linux-gamers.net #fedora

I was kidding.

anyone here using samba on fedora 7 ?

dc905 you still didn't get it to work? : P
dc905 me neither

Don't forget #CidsOnKrakc

ok you know what

LOL

Louis4920:: its weird .. i CAN access my windows computer from linux.. but when i goto my windows machine -- it find the f7 shares and folders... but can access them.. seems to think they dont excist
even stranger is the linux machines cant access its own samba shares :P

dc905 oh.. they show up fine for me. But I'm not allowed to access them.

Louis4920:: sounds the same!

Oh SAM_theboy, don't worry you're OK

muahha
hey I am going to oc my CPU

Louis4920:: no one has been able to help ya eh?

from stock 2.2 to a 2.9GHZ

dc905 nope ;;

OC is so 1999

eheeheee
well I just brought it back

how do i install fedora using grub

back in the day when you could push a 533 - 850 and push an 850 - 1200

wow

that 50% gain was awesome

u have CS ?

Sam_theman I don't play that kind of crap.

hey

33% was the best I could get with regular air cooling

ilovefedora, http://fedorasolved.org/Members/zcat/draft/installing-fedora-using-pxe-images

i just tried running the 2.6.22.1-27 kernel that came out today and iwl3945 is failing because "Could not read microcode: -22"
hi EvilBob

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eL3VWom_T6Q

I am using that kernel with my 4965 with out issue

EvilBob, thats good to hear but doesn't help explain when its failing for me

Yeah I hear you

EvilBob, you're using iwl3945 and not ipw3945?

iwl4965, It could be that we are not using the identical kernels, I am on x86_64 got my kernel from the koji builder

i'm on the stock 32 bit kernel
fedora stock that is

Yeah I had enough of ndiswrapper and grabbed the -27 kernel hot out of the oven
had only been built like 20 minutes earlier

ahhh

where is the LSB okayed location to put a webapp?

you could try grabbing the newest ucode for your card

anyone here like FPS's ?

I do but they are not fun with a 2d graphics driver
hey Moxie

bobby what card

anyone know where to look at how to compile a custom kernel?

yeah

hola

google

an easy link maybe :P
google is obscure

GeForce 8400m G

I know

Surfer666, tldp.org

EvilBob, newer than whats in iwlwifi-firmware-2.14.3-2 ?

WHAT
8400 is great
thats new

Surfer666, so is your question

thats better than what I have
It's mobile :-D

maybe, check intellinuxwireless.org or what ever

its a pretty straight forward question... how do I compile 2.6.22.1-27 with some customizations :P

EvilBob We need Nouveau ;;

I need anything more than vesa to suport my card

http://linuxplanet.com/linuxplanet/tutorials/202/1/

http://intellinuxwireless.org/iwlwifi/downloads/iwlwifi-3945-ucode-2.14.4.tgz
I don't even care if the driver has 3d at this point
as long as it does not taint my kernel and works I will be happy

Bobby u have a DX10 card

EvilBob "taint kernel" ?
you mean the blob? I would prefer not to let a blob taint anything on my system at all.

no closed source crap

u have a lot of anger

where can I get 2.6.22.1-27.fc7.src.rpm?

rpmfind.net

FOUND MY SMB PROBLEM!!! :P

your favorite mirror

Surfer666 If you are not up to the task, perhaps google is!
dc905 really?!!

can't find anything :|
I already googled.

Louis4920:: hope so.. when i try to smbclient -L into my local machine.. i get "NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE"
now to fix it

Well, what I did was create an account that can access the share
then add that account to samba
and then try to access the share as that account - but I still get DENIED'D

Louis4920:: hmmm.. let me dig

http://koji.fedoraproject.org/packages/kernel/2.6.22.1/27.fc7/src/kernel-2.6.22.1-27.fc7.src.rpm

Bobby I am going for a 3.4 GPA this year

hope you get it

but mainly 3.5
11th grade

I pulled a 4.0 the twoyears I was in tech school 13 years ago...

heeheh

OMG I feel old

thanks EvilBob

since 9th grade

Louis4920:: if i do a -N at the end it lets me in fine ?

linville updated the wireless bit in that one

my teacher friend uses fedora

EvilBob, what does that mean?

Louis4920 really?
eh
dc905 really?

the changelog is not real descriptive

EvilBob, yeah I kinda found that out

oh..

Hey you know they have 3d enable of XEN guys
but U have to download it

I will not have time to test it until about 10 PM local time Sunday

not xen the program

Louis4920:: yup.. this is weird
maybe i need to configure a guest account ?

you can play ut04 on xen

Up until the point I installed nvidia drivers, Fedora 7 recognized my monitor and used 1680x1050, but now it doesn't. I've tried modlines, etc. but can't get that resolution now. Could someone help me?

remove the nVidia driver

Isn't there another solution besides removing the driver?

You asked for help, I gave it... now you are being picky?
LOL
how did you install the crap driver?

Yes I am. LOL.
I installed the one from the livna repo.

OK, and you made sure your card is supported by the driver?

I just went by reading on the Internet as to the driver to install for nvidia. My card is an Nvidia Geforce FX5200 (Dell). Where do I check to see what the driver supports?

like on here http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_18897.html
http://fedorasolved.org/video

My card is on the supported list.

lucky you
try changing your xorg.conf to use the nv driver
I assume you want the 3d support of the crap driver

Ok, I can give that a try. I just want to get to the 1680x1050 native resolution.

but getting things working and backing up the config at known points might help you troubleshoot it
IF you can not get it working at that resolution with the nv or vesa drivers file a bug
WB bitchkat

EvilBob, seems to work with the newer microcode

rock on, file a bug for a version bump

now i just need an fglrx driver that works

Ok, Thanks

I have not tested the rnge of my wireless card since I moved to the iwl driver, BRB
range

how does one download a file with links?
or lynx

d

mutk, thanks

man?
--;

LOL, my 2 year old is outside riding one of those razor scooters

ahhh. baby's first scab.

razors slice.

hi i am http installing fedora and its asking me for a web site name and fedora directory what do i put

a web site name and a fedora directory

ilovefedora, the link i gave you explains

use "wget -c"

where'd you download the boot cd from?

SAM_theman, doen't work well
would give the wrong filename

I downloaded my f7 dvd today with wget

its saying unable to retrieve

verify the path

what link?

A web Browser.

http://fedora.mirror.facebook.com/
/linux/releases/7/Fedora/i386/os/images
am i entering it correctly

ilovefedora, http://fedorasolved.org/Members/zcat/draft/installing-fedora-using-pxe-images
ilovefedora, step 4

still coming up with errors saying unable to retrieve

When using a public mirror, you need to make sure to use the full, correct directory path, or it won't be found - the directory should end with "/os/".

it is
i think its coming up with an error because there is no internet connection

your reading comprehension sucks

lol

why

yeah doing osmosis installs should be a feature request for Fedora 10

I don't know, maybe more education would help.
"When using a public mirror, you need to make sure to use the full, correct directory path, or it won't be found - the directory should end with "/os/". Using the example mirror of "http://mirror.cc.vt.edu/pub/fedora/linux", the "Web site name" part would be "mirror.cc.tv.edu", but the directory would *not* only be "/pub/fedora/linux". You have to drill down the mirror directories to find the correct full path with "/os/"
so what should website name be?

what are you talking about, i read the fucking script, i just said the problem is i am not connected to the net thats why it doesnt find the sites

website name should be "fedora.mirror.facebook.com"

maybe that mirror is crap

ok then you tell me what to put and i will tell you what it says

Fedora Directory should be "/linux/releases/7/Fedora/i386/os/"

done exactly what you said and the response i get it Unable to retrieve http://fedora.mirror.facebook.com//linux/releases/7/Fedora/i386/os/images/stage2.img

then try another mirror

hmm, yes, then it appears you have other problems. Sorry, I was just noting that what you mentioned to the channel is not what the directions mentioned.

check your netwoking
or in your case notworking....

haha

lol notworking .... funny! EvilBob that was funny

I try

Bobby wake me up when my updates are done

He forgot to install presto
to update 200+ packages
haha

I wold but you are not downloading from my mirror (thank God)
would

can i use any picture to change the sl=plash screen?

slightly OT, but is it possible to do passwd authentication from within php?

Stupid CUPS.

heh

I dislike CUPS anyway, but at least it could be packaged correctly.

you could just install the rawhide key

No, thank you... if I wanted to play that game, I'd still be running Debian Unstable.

no just install the key
the package was signed with the wrong key

You're implying that it won't get fixed.

no I'm implying that you could do something about it on a personal level

Hm, no actually it appears to have been corrected after an update.

EvilBob, it was a rotten apple
mwilson so out of date mirror the first time

Yeah, looks like it.
Gods, I don't want to build my own packages any more...

(18/145):
ahh...
Me time
So basically what I did today.. was download f7 dvd... took 5 1/2 hours

Not like it matters how long it takes to do it.

People always lose sleep over how long something takes to download.

0est took me about 2 to find a way to mount my

not me. i sleep *while* it's downloading

and around 6 the war was over
Mission Accomplished
yeah

I'm thinking of hiring a server just so building stuff doesn't take as long anymore

Exactly. I always find highly amusing all the "oh gods, find me the fastest mirror or I'll die" weenies.

heheh'
.de mirrors are faster
german

-_-

if i start it on a weeknight, it's got all night to download *plus* all day while i'm at work since i'm not going to do anything with it in the 5 minutes i have in the morning. so as long as it doesn't take 20 hours, i'm set.

grrr... stupid vim-ml

having a mirror here at home makes building stuff nice

how much will it cost?
In usd

having a mirror on my laptop makes building stuff anywhere possible

I've found I'm not going to die if I'm not running the bleeding edge, if I don't download stuff instantaneously, if I don't build my own PC's, etc, etc.

yeah. the only thing about the fedoras is they seem to die off quickly. like core 6 was always WAY behind with firefox. so i was always just installing the binaries... i like to at least keep that one reasonably up to date since i use it all the time. i do build my own PCs, but never get in a huge rush. probably why i have enough pieces for a few extra PCs here right now. :p

I actually paid attention to the discussion re FF 1.5/2.0 in FC6... understood how little point there was in bothering with 2.0, aside from security updates, which 1.5 still has.

I don't use FF enough to care particularly about having the latest version.

yeah. just preference, i spose. since i know how to maintain all the binaries and stuff, it's ok with me. and i wasn't rushing for like release day downloads. i'll just check once in a while.

The only time I really bother with FF is when the author is incompetent, and the site doesn't degrade gracefully. Usually I use links2.

i'm one of those people that are probably often incompetent. :p i depend on firefox extensions like firebug.

Never saw the point to extensions, myself.

You must have never used them before. Extensions are great in FF.
You can make the program do what you want it to do.

firebug gives you a *lot* of debugging power. and there are other ones that are spiffy too. there's one that lets me measure pixel spaces within the browser (rather than taking screenshots), accessibility ones, all sorts of stuff.

Feh. I want it to render web pages.

the pixel spaces one sounds stupid, but when you have visual design people counting the pixels, then it saves a lot of time.

Where do I edit the boot menu ?

Then you are using a good choice. Links will do that all the time.

grub, or whatever it is.

And it discards all CSS, which is wonderful.

/etc/grub.conf
If that's what you want it to do then you got it!

thanks sir

FF allows you to not only discard the CSS files but also to make your own which is quite handy for those with accessibility issues.
No problem.

The web became much easier to use once I realized how little I cared what designers thought things should look like.

how do you tell what's important? i'm giving it a try, and it's making all the text look the same. :p

If you are going after text data then you have the perfect program.

"default=3" ... is that the entry that it loads by default, with the 1st being "0" ?

Define "important".

Default=3 means that your third entry is the default when you boot.

well, my fourth entry has been the default every time...

If you don't select one by the timeout timer then it will auto boot into that one.

like all the stuff that's normally in little text 'cause it's not important (copyright 2007) looks all the same. my eyes glazed over the second the page loaded. :p

Lookig at my grub.conf it appears that it does start counting at 0

ok

If it's not important, it shouldn't be there. The alternative is to assume the designer has a clue.
Since most don't, I don't see any reason to bother dealing with their attempts at "presentation".

Anyone ever tell you that you have a real cynical view at the world?

aren't you still depending on what the links people consider to be "presentation"?

Links makes no attempt to define presentation.

i like these sites where people have no idea what an alt tag means. "decoration"... sheesh.
i see tables and colors.

WinTV-PVR USB2 = radio works now -- thanks if anybody did something with mplayer, it's rockin!

Because that's what's in the HTML.

it's still presentation. and i have no idea why there's text here that's red. it's not red on the page.

www.csszengarden.com -- everything that's wrong with the web all rolled into one place

there's still presentation layer stuff here. you just find their decisions acceptable. and if that's what you want, i'm not trying to convince you to change.
haha. hasn't that site been out of date for years?

csszengarden is an excellent example of the right way to do the web

The right way to do the web is presentation over content?

I should hope you guys are using the p. layer for irc...
PRIVMSG #fedora :I should hope you guys are using the p. layer for irc...

so disable it.

actually, now that you've pointed it out, that's the page that's looked the best so far in links.

I should have to waste my time creating my own CSS to cure the disasters so-called "designers" create? Feh. Ignore it all.

it's simple, it's quick to read, and it doesn't have a bunch of junk blocking it all up, especially at the top.
i tried like news.google.com and news.yahoo.com and even groklaw (even though i know the idiot that runs groklaw doesn't have a clue)

So disable CSS all together.

guys...i installed the latest version of flash, yet firefox keeps telling me its missing, and refusing to show any flash content. any ideas?

d'oh. i have to run. the wife says time to go. mwilson: if you dig links, by all means stay with it. i don't want to sell you a new browser.

gbv22, 32 or 64

32

This is bad?

mwilson:i would think so
thanks

I wouldn't.

why

mwilson different strokes for different folks

Flash is hardly a necessary thing. How many sites that depend on flash for navigation are worth bothering with?

what is the preferred SELinux solution to allow access by both samba and apache to the same set of files?

oh ok, hmm...i needed to watch a video on youtube, so..i guess i need it

devhelp ##################### [103/440]

http://www.springfield-armory.com/

Never could understand why people think youtube is a big deal.

mwilson its like watching a train wreck you just have to watch it

its not a big deal really...just a good way to share videos i guess

omg, the dinosaurs still roam the earth -- some guy that says "that application isn't worth running because I disagree with the content, I'm just going to sit and say 'man flash'"

I just took a shower

I said neighbors, not friends

interesting filmography

well who cares

i'm talking about the show ..

they both have "e" in them

i personally find that everyone and everything is "god" or "uni-force" or whatever you want to call it

Huh? Galactica got deadly dull and boring, haven't watched it in ages. I have no idea what you're talking about.

Hello!
I can not get the flash player to install on my system. I am running Fedora 7 x86_64 and Firefox 2.0.0.5 and trying to install the latest Flash Player. any ideas?

yeah, wait for them to make a x86_64 flash player.

man... I was hoping you wouldn't say that...

Voort, I was just like u

do we know if they are actually going to make one?

I cannot tell the diffrence between 64, 32

you can install firefox32 and install the 32 bit player

x86_64 flavors have been out for a while, no? why haven't they recompiled it for 64 yet?
kinda takes the fun out of having x86_64 running on my system but I think I may do that

install nspluginwrapper and the flash plugin

heh

hello all
does anyone know if the chipsets of the pci IDE ATA 133 cards are supported by the linux kernel? are things better than the SATA controllers?

um...
which chipset?
most IDE is supported, most SATA is supported

i don't know about ide controllers chipset. i just seek some info from people who may use such things

you have to respect the power of SELinux

DaHood; everyone uses them...

downhillgames, i mean ide controllers on pci cards

DaHood; then just look up yours or the one you want to buy.

pembo13_com, yeah, except when configuring your stuff. other than that, yes, it deserves some respect
thanks downhillgames

Hello
Please I need help about scripting

hiya
funny, i just opened yum for python stuff :P

for me it will be bash :-D

what do you want to do?

well I would like to execute two commands in the same time

ok

isn't it " & " ?

well that's for in a row...

like sudo updatedb && sudo locate python

no

that'll update the database then after, locate python
wha?

I want in the SAME time, not in the folllowing time

right

because ... well wait please i'm gonna paste my code

not here, I hope

there is no package that lets python talk with mysqld?

http://rafb.net/p/3VuvMz53.html
Please check :-)

downhillgames, sure there is
downhillgames, that's almost a silly question

pembo13_com; indeed. why can't i see any packages in yumex then?

downhillgames, cause it's in python by default

oh snap
sweet
alex[slx];

downhillgames, only MS languages tend not to have mysql support by default

pembo13_com; this makes sense somehow ty

downhillgames, no prob
downhillgames, however, there are wrappers, such as adodb, which are seperate

i have vnc server running, but i can't have any sound unless i actually log the computer in

tahpot, ok

how can i fix this? i never log the computer in as its a server

hey man
how's it going?

tahpot, sorry, don't use vnc

alex[slx]; how've you been?

pretty good

alex[slx]; care for /msg?

not at all, go for it!

it's not a vnc problem, its a fedora problem
basically the sound card is not available until i login, how can i fix this?

if it's a server, why do you need the sound card?

Yeh good question.

its a music server connected to my stereo

oh ok
what desktop environment?

xfce, however it isn't logged in so its sitting @ gdm login screen

how can i get .jnlp working in firefox?
it just opens a new tab and ask to open and its keep repeating

if i ssh in and use mplayer or mpg321 the sound device can't be found. however if i go to the machine, login and then ssh in and use mpg321 it works fine

is a pc with one HDD on a *pci* IDE ata133 controller able to boot? The motherboard is way too old

didn't think so

via ssh perhaps

it's awesome to loose 250gb of data ..

how'd you lose it?

no idea

then are you sure it's gone?

DrNick; rm -rf /

you probably don't have permission to access the sound devices. normally you only get that permission when you login locally.

http://rafb.net/p/hMSFwr77.html
you tell me

ah that makes sense, so how can i give myself that permission always?

what kinda tools are there for creating graphical UIs for python...

what changed before things when wrong?

nothing

isn't QT better for GUI?
maybe it's all in presentation from the apps i've tried, but qtparted i like better than gparted, etc

downhillgames, mostly a matter of personal host opinion at this point

http://www.staikos.net/~staikos/whyqt/

i'm trying to install ndiswrapper and i get this error

i want to remove bcm43xx-mac80211

is it supported by the kernel?

not sure

does it show up in the network manager?

no

pembo13_com; why can i just download and install QT if it has licensing fees?

i just want to use ndiswrapper

downhillgames, it has licensing fees for development of commercial products... _not_ for use of a qt app

aaah. so in order to sell i need to pay fees

downhillgames, depends.. .if you are selling it under a close source licence

GTK looks smoother and all that, but QT just looks nice... idk if that makes sense to anyone but me
pembo13_com; it's all FOSS stuff

downhillgames, gtk looks a bit macish
downhillgames, kde just looks like KDE imho

does anybody know how to just remove bcm43xx? completely

pembo13_com; KDE looks like s***

downhillgames, assumingg you can get some one to buy your FOSS stuff , as far as i know you still don't have to pa

there should be no buying

darkscript, you might be able to use modprobe.conf to block it

just GPL

darkscript, although i think you're better of just deleting or moving the .ko file

tried blacklisting it
didn't work

downhillgames, at that point gtk = qt

so it's all dev feel and/or look
GTK it is :P

darkscript, alias bcm43xxx off in modprobe.conf

Hi
I have Red Hat Linux
I don't know if it is genuine
How do I check

where did you get it? what release is it?

The InterWebs

OMG - if it's not "Genuine" we might have to turn you in for a reward.

Well I see it for sell at Fry's
$79

lol realbytecomputer

YOu are scaring me

NETWizz; you can just download Linux for free...

Could I go to jail

BUSTED! Mate - that's a PIRATE COPY OF REDHAT!

haha

Really?

really

No - just pullin yer leg

Linux and FOSS is all free

How do I solve it?

Any GNU/linux is free

Why do they sell it at Fry's then?

Solve what? you bought it - it's RH - it's yours.

NETWizz; to rip off uninformed people

Cuz they sell it with the manuals and stickers and whatnot...
NETWizz, What version does it say it is?

There hasn't been a boxed Red Hat product in quite some time.

DrNick; Gazpacho is nice

Says it is Fedora Core 4
on the Box
by Red Hat

Fedora Core 4 is dead.
Fedora 7 is out

Perhaps it's a book with a CD?

Really?

it's not even called "Fedora Core" anymore

How is it better?

really

I used to be able to get mini-boxed sets of RH from my newsagent for $20 a pop - RH9 was the last on the shelves but

It is a box
like a windows box

NETWizz; it's like 10 fold better

so FC4 is a bit old.

is the fedora upgrade process easy?

Fedora 4 was a nice system... I remember those days
I remember using 4 back in the testing stages

NETWizz; yeah... but you just installed, right? just reinstall with 7

good times

I didn't buy it

NETWizz; http://torrent.fedoraproject.org/
you dont NEED to

I played with it - but was using mostly MDV at the time - now have given up and gone back to RH (Actually, Fedora)

NETWizz; FREE. 100% FREE. FREE
open source

Does it have the NVIIDA driver

Just d/l the latest Fedora 7 and have a play - it's great fun.

NETWizz; you can easily add it, yes!

or can I install NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.11-pkg1.run

in the repos yes - there's the kernel mod for NVIdia in livna

NETWizz; nah. get Fedora 7

Does it allow me to install RPMs?

OR you can install it via the binary
All RH and Fedora is RPM based.

Will it compile out of hte box?

NETWizz; that .run? no. it overwrites a lot of files

Shore nuff!

O_O

Er...what?

Does it have GCC, and everythign to compile

where is a youtube video when you need one?!

and also does it come with the kernel headers?

Yes - by default it does

NETWizz; get Fedora 7

How does it compare with Ubuntu?

NETWizz; see what your desktop does...

i am now having regular kernel panics and i'm about to go crazy about it

I've used Ubie on test machines here - it's heaps better - more complete "out of the box"

Yes, it's a full blown linux distribution. For more information check out the website, http://fedoraproject.org all your questions will be answered there

Ubie?

NETWizz; this is what mine does: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ImW0-MgR8I

Okay

Ubuntu

any others

other than regular yum updates .. no
i mean .. there's no telling what software updated during those few weeks without going over all the software released through yum during that timeframe

I like ubuntu, i friggin hate how ubuntu == linux these days, that and their community is just about as attractive to me as a 1200lbs woman with herpes, and a room temperature IQ

and i really doubt that is the cause

realbytecomputer; Ubie? haha. i wanna use that now...
is that saying GPL? :P

considering there are 6 other hdds hooked up that all are doing fine

Ubuntu isn't more complete out of box... it's just easier to get to complete for idiots who can't google worth crap
or who can't listen to 244 people say "use livna"

Wow
I thoguht compiz was dead

I got the shittes with Ubuntu on the last go - on more than half the machines I tested it on here in the lab, it just borked in one way or another - not a straight install. I've had better luck with F7, F6, PCLOS and Mandriva - so Ubuntu got the "Boot Too"

I thought Beryl took over

/var/log/yum.log is delightfully lacking timestamps

Compiz ain't dead - it's changed into Compiz-Fusion. I use it here on the other workstation - it's a beaut.

well .. i don't think that will help sdodson

NETWizz; that never happened. they forked into 2 projects then merged back as compiz fusion

i don't think a yum update caused my hdd to fail

nm, I thought at one time the yum log lacked timestamps, it looks like it has them now

NETWizz; actually... it was Compiz then Compiz and Compiz-quinn, then Compiz and Beryl, then Compcomm, then Compiz Fusion :P

unless there is a reasonable idea as to how or why

can you use smartctl to read the smart data?

don't know .. never tried.. got a howto?

There's sources for compiz-fusion that are USABLE - but they're still very very alpha - but getting closer week by week. I think somewhere on the opencompisiting.org website someone's actually built RPM's for F7 - can't remember for sure - I just get the code and compile it myself daily
