zcat, the needed mods to do live raw images for your flash should not be too hard
zcat, i might get to it tonight; with regards to the "actual" system images; i'm still fighting grub
zcat, i might just add a gear for syslinux so i can get something working... but yea (unless you have some sort of HVM full virt tech available... then you could actually build the raw image now)

daMaestro, what are you guys doing?

R6.8 ~ US$1
R6.80*

That'd be cool.
IP over carrier pidgeon.

also, about the best link we can get here is a 4Mbps adsl line, and that costs about ~R1600 just for the line hire, never mind actual access
before getting dedicated pipes, at least

I'm getting better than that free wifi at the cafe I'm at ATM.

lucky, dude...very lucky

I get ~25Mbps for $55/mo here

the closest I get to free wifi is my 300minutes a month that I have on our other dialup ISP account

So, what do y'all think of Evolution being the default mail reader as opposed to Thunderbird.
?

Hooola, fedorians!

I prefer Thunderbird by leaps and bounds. ;-)

i've always liked evolution
plus they have the outlook connector now, which makes it nice for hooking up to the office

I find it ironic that Evolution by name but it's progress has been anything but evolutionary.
It should have been called 'Imitation' from the beginning.

I've always liked thunderbird because its multi-platform since i work on lots of machines. it has a good junk filter and pretty good other features as well.
hah. Imitation.... I like that.

evo's got nice linkage to spamassasin without any need for user intervention
works a treat

m
Erm, mutt. All the way.

naturaly one can configure further but having it work 'outta the box' is nice
never did get into mutt

thunderbird yeah!!!

woohoo!! updating kernel fixed my acpi problem, now it works with acpi enabled.

used to use pine from way back but never managed to migrate muttwards

it's not really like thunderbird is so different from the old netscape communicator mail package

thunderbird + webmail plugin is all i needed !!!!

if i didn't need exchange support, i'd just use sylpheed
so small and sleek

[nix]: great news! you on a laptop?
mine's still got sleep/hibernate issues :/

yeah, its a laptop
i never use sleep/hibernate because to me its pointless, but I'm sure they work

same here....didn't borther to fix it....

well considering how well vista does them with this laptop I've been annoyed that I can't simply close the lid, and put it to sleep with F7, and then wake it back up by opening the lid

[nix] " but I'm sure they work" an optimist.

or if the power cord is unplugged, it should hibernate when I close the lid
and yeah he is an optimist
hasn't worked for me yet

its linux, being optimistic goes hand in hand

instead it just 'gets stuck' and I have to hard-reset the thing
meanwhile battery drains out

WebDragon, At whome are you annoyed BTW? Consider the likely zero '0' activities from most laptop vendors to get this stuff working, we know who to blaim.

s/blaim/blame/

Yeh that toom
*too

(:
heheehe
it's not so much blame that I'm trying to throw around

End of a long day.
Just annoyance.. ?

it's that I'd really appreciate this functionality -- normally I have the lappy side by side with my desktop unit but occasionally want to wander downstairs with it and don't want to have to carry it with the lid open

me still thinking whether to upgrade to F7....

go for it -- so far I'm enormously pleased with it
can't WAIT to update my desktop unit
first I'm backing up though, because I depend on this box

maybe i should.....

downtime will screw me royally

then close the lid when you go downstairs, lol

CM3, yeah. its pretty good.

nice

not *too* different from FC6 but the fixed some of the annoying stuff I saw from time to time.

do you use the webmail web hosting plugin?

Its *quite* stable too.
CM3, on thunderbird?
there's a webmail plugin?

i loved my exsisting F6 lappy .....rely on it heavily

I gotta see this
CM3, i suggest wiping and reinstalling btw.

[nix]: what happens when I close the lid? was I not clear enough in my earlier explanation?

don't try the upgrade path.

[nix]: using vista, no huhu -- can reopen lid wether power cord unplugged when I closed, or not, and will resume operations momentarily
[nix]: with F7 it locks up, whether I told it sleep, or hibernate
forces hard reset which wastes time and battery

http://webmail.mozdev.org

oh....
hell yes!

anyone know of a program that can read windoze cab files?

oh...

[nix]: i.e. high annoyance factor for functionality that worked out of box with Vista that came on laptop -- even dual-booting didn't screw with that

froz, you want it read it on a linux desktop, right?

cabextract

well, I really dont see why you want it to sleep anyway

i'll be running my F6 lappy for a longer while until F7 matures a little....

CM3, its quite mature now.
It was released two months ago. Its only got four months left.

yup. need to open ff8's cab archives so I can manually extract a file and put it where it should be

fedora moves fast.

thanks WebDragon

i want to hear from you guys...do you upgrade as soon as a new release comes out?

I try to...

well, with only that one little problem with acpi thats fixed now, all 5 laptops run F7 smoothly

i'm comfortable with F6...in fact i was using F4 for more than a year before this
i don't go after features....basically i just use what i comes with to handle my daily work

CM3 with longer release systems, i wait a bit. like a month or two. For example RHEL.
but with fedora, you might as well upgrade a week in.

also ran fc4 on the home pc for about a year. then upped it straight to fc6, and from there to f7

[nix]: battery savings?

different philosophy. meant to be bleeding edge stuff.

i loved FC4...

[nix]: because Vista can do it and Fedora can't ?

however, do not do this for production systems.

true that...

production system and bleeding edge stuff do not mix well.

well, a couple of minutes of battery savings isnt enough for me, lol

[nix]: because it's Standard operating Procedure for normal laptop operations that it either sleeps or hibernates when the lid is closed depending on whether it's plugged in or not ?

well, this lappy IS my production system....it doesn't sleep unitl i sleeps

and Fedora should be able to do it as well as damned Vista?

eh...

boooooo....vista

CM3, by production, i mean you can shut it off for the night.... ;-)

just set your screen to go off which is where most of the power is used and problem solved

[nix]: and worst reason yet, is : "BECAUSE IT LOCKS UP WHEN I CLOSE THE LID"

same here....but then, my laptop almost never goes off except when I pack it up (then it just hibernates)

and what if I want to walk to the coffeeshop and re-open it there? I gotta wait for it to reboot again?
waste all that time and power rebooting it? or waste all the power on the walk to the coffeeshop ?

F7 on yours?

yup

or getting through airport terminal ?
is problem. should be fixed. nuff said

you dont have to turn your laptop off to have the screen go off

got it three days after release

a laptop biggest battery drainer is the screen, so, just set the screen to go blank when you close the lid, which is nearly the same as sleep/hibernate, lol

my problem with upgrading, is too much configuration to do to bring it back the way it was before the upgrade....drivers, file structure, applications, settings.....

not anymore :-p
OK...drivers, yes, you might need to update them. but all the rest runs exactly the same

me still old skool....don't know how...hehe

hmmm. what's with all this pdf spam i'm getting now.

[nix]: however, it's also still ON

well, to upgrade fc6 to f7, all you do is put the dvd in, boot, and go. but upgrading is NOT recommended

i think its some new pdf virus

and the fans will still be running trying to cool it off

maybe links to some dodgy site thu the pdf

so all you do is backup your home dir, and you're set

[nix]: and when it's in a laptop carry-case this will disable the ability of the fan to allow the laptop to 'breathe' causing it to overheat

if your gonna be away from your computer that long then you should turn it off to begin with, lol

like I said, IS PROBLEM. NEEDS FIX

yeah the installation goes painless....but post install work....getting it back to how it was configured before....

entire home dir, mind.....including hidden directories

[nix]: which totally negates ability to fast-resume

that's a pain to begin with.....

[nix]: which uses additional power to reboot each time one has to shut it down

30 seconds is too long for you?

anything that wastes my time is too long for me

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=249653 ---- Do a User switching without correct password

i tend not to keep too many personal stuff on it and that's the reason why.....

PARTICULARLY when VIsta pulls it off so easily

they appear to be only advertisements.
standard stock spam

it's _annoying_ to see Vista do something better

back it up, next time put it on another partition in case of this very happening. then, when upgrading, you don't need to worry about settings

particularly when F7 makes this laptop feel FAST in comparison
normally I keep all of /home on a separate partition

booooo...........vista....

then I can do installs/upgrades without worrying about blowing away all my files
only thing I need worry about then is configuration data in /etc/

used to be the standard Tech Support "first action" whenever we got back an imagesetter on the fritz
wave the rubber chicken over the motherboard, fire the machine up, and see if it works
half the time was no further action required
we built good stuff

OK...that is pretty damn weird

too bad company went down under bad management
we had best quality, just not as deep pockets as Agfa or Linotronic

where'd you get that rubber chicken? Seems like it's a good tool to have

hehe same one you'd get anywhere in a joke shop
very useful tool to have. computer repair is still half voodoo
other half is wizardry
heh

yes....that I agree on
I remember last year during my compsci practical I had a problem compiling code. just doesn't wanna work. So I save all, reboot (it was a windoze machine running dev-c++), try again. nothing. swore it at, it works

last time i wrote a piece of code was 10 years ago.....hehe

i'm using rsync and it's crashing with some invalid MAC on input error. I'm trying to transfer about 45GB from 1 machine to another...any ideas whats going wrong? Google suggests its apparently due to some corruptions in the network driver. I have done larger transfers through HTTP at higher rates and haven't faced such a problem till today. Same problem occurs if i try to scp the files... Any pointers?

http transfers from and to the same systems ?

Anvil, yep

and you've checked the hash sums (md5, sha1..) after the transfers to see if it wasnt corrupted ?

Anvil, the files dont turn out to be corrupted. i've updated everything on both the systems just to rule out any potential bugs in ssh or rsync but it doesn't seem to be helping
Anvil, yes. sometimes the files are perfectly transferred while at other instances they turn out to be corrupt.

if it claims about bad MAC address it reallys sounds like it's not an application bug
more like network driver, or hardware.

Anvil, from what i've found on google MAC doesn't refer to Media Access Control

ha, so what is it then ? -_-

Anvil, MAC is related to SSH. Its Message Authentication Code or something...

ha
you're doing rsync over ssh ?

Anvil, yes
Anvil, rsync -auv -e ssh source dest
Anvil, i've changed the network cards. replaced one machine entirely. but it just doesn't solve the problem. and there are no definitive answers on google either

i love amarok, i love amarok

we dont care that much. Really.
try to transfert to another destination or from another source. Try to see which system is guilty

Anvil, hmm. good idea

check system files (libraries, binaries) integrity
and check the ram

i will put that in my book of sorrows

Anvil, ok. will do that.

Given that my Fedora 7 box has non-official repositories enabled (i.e. livna) *and* I have installed programs via yum & that repository .. does "history" dictate that it will be kind of difficult to upgrade to fedora 8 ?
bGiven that my Fedora 7 box has non-official repositories enabled (i.e. livna) *and* I have installed programs via yum & that repository .. does "history" dictate that it will be kind of difficult to upgrade to fedora 8 ?/b

difficulty is very relative.
though, in case you havent noticed in the installer, you can add repositories during the install process. So you can perform an upgrade of the whole stuff.

and now, fudging the bell-curve completely, we have Rally Cry by Steve Morse Band from Structural Damage «amarok_xchat - 1.4»

ok
thanks

definitely agree with you Kylratix -- amarok kicks some major ass

anyone have a good download like for a Knoppix Live CD with a 2.4x kernel option?

F7's LiveCD would be a 2.6.x

E-mu: you can try www.damnsmalllinux.org

why do you want a 2.4.x kernel ?

E-mu: they run ONLY 2.4 kernel

hm I have Knoppix and it sais kernel 2.6xx
I need it so I can run the Hard drive utils in 2.4x environment
knoppix v5.1.1 is 2.6xx kernel right?

well, like I said, get dsl. they're based on knoppix, and run a 2.4 kernel

E-mu, what hard drive utilities?

I have two older running Linix OS that are 2.4xx kernels and the ext3 fs is a bit different in 2.4x kernel vs 2.6x. So I can format is 2.6x and expect it to work properly in 2.4x
my hard drive woudl nto boot because I formated it a 2.6x kernel environment and the OS is running a 2.4x kernel. It was the fourth partition I was formating
Its very hard to find a Knoppix Version 3.t or less ISO. SInce v3.8 they have been using a 2.6xx kernel
3.t=3.7
ok thanks for the ifno!!
info
another question for you. I want to take the boot floppies floppy 1 and 2 and make a boot CD or USB is there any Documentation on that? Doing it either in a windows or linux host Environment
I owuld use Nero in Windows and it does have an option to burn and ISO and make a bootable CD but the floppies are not ISO's

E-mu: you can use dd to read in from the floppy device and output to a file

I changed my sshd port in sshd_config and set my router to forward to that port. I restarted sshd. Yet I can't connect, anyone have any idea why this might be?

both floppies how woudl I get both ISO's as one?

it would be something like 'dd if=/dev/fd0 of=~/floppy1.img'
then from there you can use isomaster to create an iso from the files
try connecting to the old port. otherwise, firewall?

isomaster will combine the iso's to one?

hmm lol, I just noticed my gnome-panel clock is fixed in time at 12:08:44

The old port doesn't work since its now set to a different port. And it might be the software firewall, but to be honest, I really have no idea how to mess with it.

E-mu: I dunno. I'm really not that experienced with iso modding. you asked for a way, I give you the tools to do it..how you do it you'll have to figure out self
what fedora?

i can remove seconds, switch it to UTC, it all does that, but stays at the same time

I tried to mess around with selinux before I came to work tonight, but really didnt know how to set it to allow that port
fedora core 7

thanks for the help frozty_sa :P

try killing ntpd?
open a terminal
system-config-securitylevel-tui
add the new port

hi. a program is causing high cpu utilization. what other commands can i use to gather info aside from pstack, lsof, and /var/log/messages?

time of my computer is correct

I tried the DSL but using the procedure in windows method II and the 4 gig USB won't boot it fails so I have to try one of the other methods and there are many
and Tried it on two different brands of USB flash drives both Sandisk and Lexar

I will copy and paste that down, I cant do that in the terminal right now since I am not home, and cant login through ssh.

I was able to succesffuly put Knoppix 5.1.1 on the it

anything else I need to know about adding a port once I enter that in?

yes..save the settings ;-)

lol

evolution is fixed at the same time
probably the gtk2 update from testing

thanks.

about selinux..best idea I can give you is run setroubleshootd and check the output it gives you

will do. Prolly just adding the port will do...? shouldn't it? :p

like I said, I don't know much about SELinux

I am sure I know less.

lol

have you changed the sshd port on fc7 before?

restart daemon

btw, the reason I am trying to change the port is because I keep getting bots scanning my ip for sshd and then running brute force attacks against it. In all reality, I don't have to worry too much, I have root login disabled, and I only have one account active, and its alpha-numeric and quite long, and it doesn't use a dictionary word at all.

yes, but the brute force is irritating I can imagine...

It is annoying, very, I download and started fail2ban, but I dont know how to configure it better than the default.....but I still got my logs flooded even after setting it up. Frankly, I am surprised the bots find me since my hardware firewall blocks a lot of crap. Though, there are way around it, nmap -P0 can get around it.

do you let your connection change dedicated ip hosting every now and then?

no
well what do you mean let it?

do you disconnect and reconnect your connection every now and then, so that it changes?

no. Not at all.

try it. some bots can keep a cache of vulnerable or potential addresses

weird, I downgraded gtk2, didn't help
rebooted to old kernel
was fixed

Didn't think of that, but that makes sense. though, I just memorized this ip. :p

rebooted to new, still fixed
updated gtk2 again, reboot, still fixed

you said that your system time is correct?
use dyndns

it has been all the time
only system-admin thing I did this morning, next to the update, was switching selinux to enforcing
let me try that again

It should change if I shut it down and then start it back up.

hmm , time is still ok

yes. I assume you're referring to the connection?

the only this is, according to the logs, its coming from different ips from around the world, so i've been getting multiple bots. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that I have a popular ISP? ;p
yes

botnets
easiest way to do an exact. exploit lots of similar, vulnerable systems (this meaning windoze), and then use a distributed attacking and scanning system to further propogate the botnet

it could be a botnet, but why use a botnet when you could just use whatever dictionary you have and just use one? Using the same dictionary file from 10 different zombies wouldnt be very profitable.

s/exact/attack

There not using exploit code on a service, just really poor brute force attacks, I mean really poor. Looks like a 3rd grade instigated the attack.

I dunno....ask the guy controlling the botnet
hahaha....but that was just an example I used

it reminds me of the mysql issue. That was a nightmare. :p

mysql?

mysql worm
exploited a bunch of sql host servers
i believe the exploit attacked windows machines
it just automated the process of exploiting a certain issue in a version of mysql
worms like that can exploit a lot of servers if the bug is fresh.

yup
I like windows...at least, I like seeing how people using it get screwed

*sn0rtlaugh*

windows is a malware farm. It makes me sad how much "security" you can use/pay for and not stop the constant onslaught.

hmmm. someone DoS'd my neighbor in my colo.
fun. it ate up all the bandwidth on the switch.

my sympathies.

Hi, It's my first time with Virt-Manager. I was installing WinXP, it rebooted, wants the CDrom. How can I attach the iso file to the VM ??

qodosh, thanks. :-)

what can i use to rip dvds?

any idea guys? How to attach iso images to a booted VM in virt-manager ?

why rip dvds, just download it and burn it.

mount the dvd, point virt-manager to the folder

point it ?
I can only add a storage device
which is a file or a /dev entry

then add it as a storage device ;-)

hmm
maybe /dev/cdrom

oh wait...

waiting ..

can you only add /dev entries or specific files?

both, but I think this adds them as hard-disks

is your windows in that stage after the first reboot doing the whole "configuring your system" thing?

yes
exactly
and asks for the cdrom

i have a dvd that i want to rip

You can't find a torrent for it and just download it and burn it to dvd?
Shubbar*
:p

do you have ripping program?

That's what I do, I don't use any ripping software, so I don't really know what is out there. I'm assuming you've googled?

found something yet?

and where did those films come from! people who ripped them and seeded them :p
take and give

actually they came from people with a digital camera who walked into a movie theatre usually. :p
at least the movies I get. :p

telesync are bad quality

no, sorry...you could try adding the /dev which points towards your disc drive

ok thanks

i used autogk under windows
i need something similar

for linux?

yes

when does the stuff in /etc/cron.d/ get run ? since none of that is in cron.(daily|hourly|weekly|monthly)/*
or mentioned in /etc/crontab

http://www.exit1.org/dvdrip/
or more specifically http://www.exit1.org/dvdrip/dist/dvdrip-0.98.6.tar.gz
its written in perl I believe
so make sure you have perl installed.
it has a GUI as well I believe

yes!! suspend works

tried to install it
it needed some dependencies

enjoy :-p

i could not install all dependencies

how did you try to install the deps? via yum?

betcher bippy I will
evidently not

find out what the depencies were and google them

erm no

or yum install them

install the package via yum and let it resolve the deps
dont; google the deps and get packages from god knows where

you're a big fan of google :p

googleing for dependencies is like letting a flock of ravens help you pick up your spilled gold coin collection

maybe one comes from atrpms, and another from fresh, and another from livna.....can you imagine the pain?

oo shiny!
I've SEEN this pain firsthand from others in here, though I've been smart enough to avoid it myself -- I don't need to imagine it but would prefer not to have to live through it again
even vicariously

:-p

google is life

hahahaha!!

Life is a cereal

life, is a cookie
a beeeg chocolate chip cookie

oh dear gawd

life is like a chair of bowlies

I dont freaken care how one gets depencies, eitherway its not hard
:p
dependencies*

you damn well should care if you want a working system when you're finished the cascade
if you aren't using yum to install your packages you're in for all kinds of hurt
if you're adding all manner of strange repositories to your yum configuration, you're also in for pain
bif you're adding all manner of strange repositories to your yum configuration, you're also in for pain/b

it's crazy
dvdrip requires perl-anyevent
perl-anyevent requires coro-event

I use yum...wth

coro-event requires perl-anyevent

using google doesn't mean you type in random words and start clicking shit downloading everything, if you got eyes read, and download the right thing.

its catch-22

is there an equivalent to wine for running mac os programs on fedora?

http://k9copy.sourceforge.net/index.php
try that, go to the fedora core 7 towards the bottom if thats your distro
this might work the best for f7 http://www.sagui.org/~gustavo/blog/static/k9copy-rpm.html
never tried it though

that's like dvdshrink

for the first program, do you have a fully updated perl?

hi
how can i avoid that the "lp" module is loaded? adding it to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist had no effect

read the man modprobe.conf

there's also an option blacklist but it had also no effect (after boot, the lp driver is loaded)

anyone know if there is a way to change the user agent string of a version of IE running under wine?

i think you havent read.

you can set the ie version in the registry. the agent version depends on this registry key (also the behaviour of conditional comments)

the thing is how do you edit a registry that exists in wine

do you simply want to have the correct version?

I was wanting to look at a site that doesn't like linux
it detects linux in the user agent string and refuses to run

oh
i see

and I believe it probably uses activeX or some such
so it probably has to be viewed in IE

use some proxifier

try to use firefox + an extension that changes the user agent
or http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux - that's an installer for most ies under wine

Also, opera has this feature

including corect registry settings

anyone out there have experience with plesk
I am trying to have a php script read files out of a home directory

ah I allready have IE running under linux I just need to make it pretend its IE under windows

and for some reason it is not albe to do so

thanks for the advice I think I have a solution

Hi!
Why fedora 7 identifies my partitions as /dev/sd* instead of /dev/hd* ?
Thanks for information

sloved: i had to blacklist all aliases

pacho2, since it uses new libata-based drivers

and, is this the normal behavior or it will be reverted in the future?

former, i'd say..

thanks :-)

Hi! I have Fedora 6 5CDs, but cant't install it because files repomd.xml and primary.xml.gz from directory repodata are damaged. Could anyone help me and email or upload these files?

http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/6/i386/os/repodata/
"or use mirror close to you" 8)

thanks, but i think it's files from DVD distribution, in primary.xml.gz I can see "location href="Fedora/RPMS/", and I need files from 5CD distro.

so what?..
they shouldn't differ at all, afaik

ok, I'll try them now

hi
i have a poblem with yum upgrade from fc6 to fc7
could not find filesystem '/dev/root'
anyone knows what's happening?

new libata drivers probably
you got raid?

that's wright, bau i don't know what can i modify to make it work
no raid
only ide
i made the upgrade without first verify /etc/fstab
and there was /dev/hdX entries
then i modified, i've changed to LABELs
i've changed grub entries accordingly
and made another initrd
later i've tried to upgrade the system with FC7 dvd
FC7 installed his kernel, made his initrd, but it doesn't boot

what's in your grub.conf in kernel line?

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.21-1.3194.fc7 ro root=LABEL=Cata

try '... root=Cata'

i've tried 'root=/dev/sda2'
should that work too?

check out http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/YumUpgradeFaq#head-460f102d94a78a6ce69225eec564f00403ff02a4

hi, i just wonder if there is any well known problem between fedora core 6 and pango/gtk? i noticed that there is a huge latency while typing in a gtk text buffer, until the character is displayed (diskless machine, 1.6GHz, 1GB RAM) ; ever heard of that?

thx .i've already read that

dont know then 8\ dont think you need "LABEL=" in root stanza

after FC7 upgrade with DVD it made the same thing in grub
in /etc/fstab i have:
LABEL=Cata / ext3 defaults 1 1
i don't understand why it's booting ok with FC7 rescue cd
and with his kernel from FC7 no

man where on freenode do you go to bug someone about Evolution?

WebDragon, #mozilla

what's #mozilla got to do with novell?

still asleep

if I were talking about Thunderbird, then yeah that'd make sense

your right

I need a way to configure it to 'leave messages on server for 10 days' and then delete them

that should be in there

as it is I can either leave them on the server always, or delete them immediately
no other options seem to be available
(this is with Evo 2.6.3)
2.10.3 has this option
even more incentive to upgrade this damn thing

http://noname.math.vt.edu/fedoraunity
this is a 2.10.3
